Final Project:
AP Statistics Final Project
Work with a Partner (two people)
One project will be done by you and your partner.
Final Exam Grade (10% of overall grade)
o Half – Final Exam (Tuesday, May 19)
o Half – Final Project
• Project must reflect material we have studied in Chapters 1 through 14
covered during the school year.
• The sampling, exploratory data analysis and inference procedures
discussed in class must be included in the project.
•
•
•
Final Project components: (all must be typed)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Written proposal (due Friday, May 29th)
Sampling technique explanation (due Thursday, June 4th)
Data Set from sampling technique (due Tuesday, June 9th)
Project Write-Up (due Friday, June 12th)
Poster Presentation (due Tuesday, June 16th)
Details of Components:
1. Written proposal (due Friday, May 29th)
• Formal write-up (full sentences)
o USE BULLET POINTS (I love them)
o I may reject your idea due to a variety of reasons:
 It is not feasible in the amount of time left in the
school year.
 The topic is already being covered.
 The sampling technique cannot be done or is not
feasible.
• A question about a topic of interest that you and your
partner will attempt to answer/draw conclusions about.
• Identify a testable hypothesis or parameter you wish to
estimate.
o Must be one of the following:
 Significance Test
 Confidence Interval
 Regression Analysis (significance test too)
• Fully name the test/interval you plan to carry out.
• Identify your audience
o This will be whom you are able to draw a conclusion about.
o Do not generalize your findings to a wider audience than
your sample data allows.
• Write a null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis in
words and mathematical symbols.
2. Sampling technique explanation
• You MAY NOT collect data until I have approved this.
o If you are sampling PHS students:
 I might reject your idea
 You MUST use MY form for asking the questions to
PHS students.
 You can NOT force anyone to participate.
 Sampling students is dicey so I have to manage how
much of this is going on in the building.
• Your sample(s) must be collected.
o Collected data will be more time consuming than you think
so MANAGE your time.
• Sample size must be more than 30.
• It must be collected as a simple random sample (SRS)
• You will need a formal write-up using statistical
vocabulary that thoroughly describes your method of
sampling.
o Use the random digit table.
o Use your graphing calculator.
• Pay attention to issues with your sampling technique.
If I find an issue, I may let it go because I expect you to
discuss the bias/issue in your write-up.
3. Data Set from sampling technique (Have as an
excel file)
•
•
•
A 1-sample test = One data set of 30 or more.
A paired test = Two data sets of 30 or more that will be combined
into one data set.
A 2-sample test = Two data set of 30 or more.
4. Project Write-Up
•
To be discussed when we get closer to the due date.
5. Poster Presentation
•
To be discussed when we get closer to the due date.
Example Questions:
• Groups can NOT do the same project/question or
use the same data
• What is the average age of the members of Congress?
• Does it take more than 250 licks to get to the center of a
Tootsie Pop?
• Who takes longer to get ready for school- freshmen girls
or senior girls?
• Do female drivers talk on cell phones while driving more
than male drivers?
• Who tips better at a restaurant- men or women?
• Do Chips Ahoy cookies have more chocolate chips than
the generic brand cookies?
