Introduction
The Boardmaker PCS Sign Language Libraries Volume III adds 737 new sign language symbols to
the Mayer-Johnson Picture Communication Symbols collection. The vocabulary for these symbols
was based on suggestions from the original PCS Sign Language Library users which include teachers, parents, speech pathologists, and deaf educators.
Contents
The Boardmaker PCS Sign Language Libraries Volume III contain the following:
• American Sign Language (ASL) library
• Signed Exact English (SEE) library
• Combination SEE/ASL library for signs used by both disciplines
• Ethnic/gender selections for many symbols
• Additional dark skin tone library
Overview
Signed Exact English and American Sign Language
Requests for PCS sign language symbols have come from people using both Signed Exact
English (SEE) and American Sign Language (ASL) styles of signing. In order not to exclude
either discipline, sign symbols were drawn in both forms where possible. The symbols are
organized into libraries: ASL, SEE, and SEE/ASL (if you only use one style of signing, you
may choose to only load the appropriate libraries). To help locate the signs, there is an
alphabetical index located on page 7 and a picture index located on page 13. If you find
there are two signs for a word and you do not care about the origin of the sign, then use the
sign that is easiest for you or your client to perform.
The Symbols
The sign language symbols are not meant to teach the sign—they are meant only to
reinforce. Because of space limitation in the symbol squares, the complete actions of the
signs have been simplified and the written directions have not been included. Therefore,
when learning the signs it is best to use a good sign language book in addition to the symbols.
(See “Reference Books” on page 6.)
Please note:
It was found that reference books in the same discipline often differed on how a
sign was to be performed. If there were two ways of signing a word, each style
was included when possible. In addition, sign language professionals stated that
many signs differ from region to region. The PCS sign language symbols are
based on literature and do not reflect the regional differences of signing.
5
Illustrations
The symbols are drawn as you would see another person sign
the symbol to you. In most cases, the left hand is stationary
and the right hand performs the motion. The arrows direct the
motion. In some signs, dotted lines indicate the starting position of the hand motion. (See Figure 1.)
Figure 1
When drawing the sign language symbols,
emphasis was placed on the hand motion. If the
motion interacts with a part of the body, a representation of the body was
included with the sign (see Figure 2). If the symbol does not include a part of
the body, the motion is to take place in front of the chest (see Figure 1).
Figure 2
Some of the symbols include a choice of gender/ethnic faces (see Figure 3). This will help
you personalize communication boards for your clients. In addition, there is an additional
dark skin tone library of hand and partial face signs.
