Training for timber jobs
Forty years ago, when Neal Leen was 19 and just beginning his career in lumber
mills, much of the work in the saw filing room was considered “black magic.” Saw
filers guarded the secrets of their trade, passing them down only to a select few.
“I got a lucky break,” Leen said. “The guy who taught me wanted someone with
no experience so they would have no preconceived notions on how to do things.”
Now, as Baby Boomers like Leen start to retire, there’s a need for the next
generation to learn of Idaho’s most prolific and well compensated trades.
Lumber companies are looking for hard workers willing to learn. North Idaho
College Workforce Training Center has teamed up with timber companies in the
area to offer specialized training certificates and develop skill standards.
“We want someone who is really going to make a career out of it,” said Leen,
who works for Stimson Lumber Company in Priest River, which is one of the
lumber companies that has worked closely with NIC to design new training programs that are now available for workers already in
the industry or those looking to break into it. “If they have the skills and patience, they have a real opportunity.”
For information on timber-related training opportunities such as saw filers, log scalers, and industrial control technicians, contact
the NIC Workforce Training Center at (208) 769-3221, or visit www.woodproductscoe.org.
Safety Fest of the Northwest to be held Feb. 17-19
The NIC Workforce Training Center is also offering a wide variety of free safety training at the eighth annual Safety Fest of the
Great Northwest Feb. 17-19, 2016. This three-day event is an opportunity for companies to receive free safety training for
their employees from the area’s best safety instructors. Safety Fest offers more than 40 classes to choose from for workers in
construction, general industry, mining, agriculture, and logging. Classes offered include OSHA 10, CPR/First Aid, MSHA refresher,
Hazwoper refresher, Fall Protection, Forklift and Water Safety, among others.
For Safety Fest sponsorship and volunteer information, contact Colleen Hoffman at (208) 769-7732.
Registration begins Jan. 15 at www.nic.edu/safetyfest.

Succession Planning
Succession planning is a critical and often
neglected part of starting, owning, and transitioning your small business. The goal of
succession planning is to preserve the value of
what you have created with your hard work and
provide an orderly transition of the business
based on how you–the entrepreneur–want
the transition to occur. In this course, we will
discuss the road blocks to getting started, the
five basic elements of a solid succession plan,
and how to get started toward the completion
of your own succession plan. We will also work
together on some real-life case studies to help
you start thinking objectively about the future.
Additionally, participants will receive a succession planning checklist that will help you take
the first steps toward the completion of a plan.
This topic is important to both established
businesses and business start-ups. No matter
what stage of development a succession plan
is critically important to preserving wealth and
relationships.
