MAISON&OBJET AMERICAS ANNOUNCES RAFAEL DE
CÁRDENAS AS DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
MAISON&OBJET AMERICAS, the premiere trade show
exhibition of design and home décor, announces New Yorkbased architect and designer Rafael de Cárdenas as
Designer of the Year for the second edition of its Americas
fair, which will take place at the Miami Beach Convention
Center from May 10 to May 13, 2016.
RAFAEL DE CÁRDENAS
Designer of the Year is awarded to an industry professional
from North or South America who has made a notable
contribution to the interior design & lifestyle industry in the
past year. In 2015, MAISON&OBJET AMERICAS gave the
award to the Brazilian industrial designer Zanini de Zanine,
who creates furniture for Poltrona Frau among others.
The first MAISON&OBJET AMERICAS, with 300 brands,
received more than 8,600 unique visitors from 82 countries
including Brazil, Canada, France, Mexico, Italy, Colombia,
the Dominican Republic and Chile.
This year the fair expands, transforming Miami into the
spring capital of design in the Americas. The fair culminates
with an awards ceremony honoring Rafael de Cárdenas on
May 11th; he will also speak at the highly anticipated Interior
Design & Lifestyle Summit and the conference portion of
MAISON&OBJET AMERICAS.
The MAISON&OBJET selection committee was captivated
by Rafael de Cárdenas’ innovative and talented industrial
design, including his line of furniture for Johnson Trading
Gallery in 2011, his imaginative use of bold color, patterns,
graphic and coordinated shapes in interior architecture, and
his ability to create environments that provokes emotion
through unexpected combinations.
This is apparent in his projects including the Baccarat
Madison Avenue flagship and Nike’s 45 Grand fitness
studio and showroom in SoHo. This year alone, he has
brought restrained Havana glamour to the reincarnated
Asia de Cuba restaurant near the Public Theater in New
York, wrapped the walls of the jewelry designer Delfina
Delettrez’s second London boutique in mirror and a
malachite trompe l’oiel, helped reimagine the Au Pont
Rouge department store in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and
was one of six creatives invited to reinterpret Kartell's
Bourgie Lamp at ICFF celebrating the design’s 10th
anniversary.
Rafael de Cárdenas is the May 2016 MAISON&OBJET
AMERICAS Designer of the Year. MAISON&OBJET
operates four international design trade shows: two in Paris
(January for product design and September for interior
design), since 2014 in Singapore in March and since 2015
in Miami.

ABOUT RAFAEL DE CÁRDENAS
As founder of SoHo-based design firm Rafael de Cárdenas /
Architecture at Large, Rafael de Cárdenas creates artful,
imaginative concepts for diverse projects spanning commercial
and residential interiors, art advisory, objects and furniture, and
temporary and pop-up spaces. Prior to founding his own design
firm in 2006, de Cárdenas worked for Calvin Klein as a men’s
collection designer and as a creative director for special effects
production house Imaginary Forces.
His interest in creating environments with moods, as opposed to
any specific style, has allowed him to work with a wide array of
clients including Barneys New York, Baccarat, Cartier, Nordstrom,
Nike and Ford Models.
In 2011 de Cárdenas launched his first furniture collection with
Johnson Trading Gallery and in 2012 was the first and only
American invited to participate in AD Interiéurs Voyages. Recent
design collaborations include the Nike – 45 Grand fitness studio in
SoHo, the reincarnation of hotspot Asia de Cuba in NYC, jewelry
designer Deflina Delettrez’s London boutique and a
reinterpretation of Kartell's "Bourgie Lamp" for its 10th Anniversary.
Rafael de Cárdenas has been named a Featured Designer for AD
France Collector and to the Architectural Digest AD100 list.
ABOUT MAISON&OBJET AMERICAS
MAISON&OBJET is the premiere global showcase for home
design and décor, unmatched anywhere in the world.
Originating in Paris over two decades ago, the trade show
continues to become increasingly international, paralleling
the evolution of its content to attract an ever-increasing
number of overseas export specialists. Initially focused on
retail markets, the show is now decidedly prescriber-market
oriented. Just last May, the brand announced its forging into
the Americas, creating Maison&Objet Americas, taking place
in Miami Beach, a border town with a draw and influence
extending far beyond its city limits into very economically
dynamic regions. The Americas show has already doubled
in size in its second year and has announced a new director
at the helm to continue to bring together the most talented
home interior professionals. Today, the MAISON&OBJET
community offers four opportunities for events throughout
the year and around the world
