ERO (Electronic Registrar Online)
Creating a Profile
This is the first step in the use of the ERO registration system. You should need to go
through this process only the first time you use the registration system.
In order for your adult literacy program and the Office of Adult Education and Literacy to
accurately report professional development activities, it is imperative that you provide
accurate information regarding yourself and your role in your program.
Please read through all of the instructions for creating your profile (pages 2-8) before
beginning the registration process.
If you have any questions while creating your profile, please contact the Resource
Center System Administrators at 800-237-0178 or valrcero@vcu.edu.
There are also helpful information icons located throughout ERO. When you see the
following icon
, you can click on it to reveal tips for using the system.
To create your profile, follow the steps below:
1. Open an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc.
Firefox is the recommended browser due to its compatibility with Blackboard. The
Resource Center offers all of its online trainings through Blackboard. Internet
Explorer, while compatible with ERO, is not compatible with Blackboard. To
download the Firefox browser for free, go to: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
2. In the browser window, enter the following URL:
http://www.valrc.org/
You may access Blackboard and ERO through the icons listed on our homepage.

9. The New Profile Form displays. Please fully read all instructions below to
accurately fill out your profile and avoid future problems. Fill out your profile
information following the instructions outlined below as shown in the image on the
following page. Note that the only required fields are marked with asterisks.
User ID — Please input the first 9 digits of your 10-digit phone number in this field.
This must be a unique number. You should use your home or cell phone number to
serve as your User ID as work numbers are often not unique to you.
PIN — This is your password and can be any number that you will remember. You
will need to enter this number every time you log into ERO. Please note that ERO
does not recognize a zero (0) as the first number of your PIN.
Status — Select “Active,” which is the only option available.
Registrant Type — It is imperative that you correctly identify yourself in this field.
Select the type of organization for which you provide services. If you are unsure,
consult your program manager or call the Resource Center at 800-237-0178.
Primary Location — It is imperative that you correctly select your Primary Location.
This is the location of your program, NOT where you personally live. If you have any
doubt about how you should be located, speak to your supervisor or call the
Resource Center at 800-237-0178.
Primary Classification — Please select the Primary Classification that best
describes your role in your organization. We understand that you may play multiple
roles within your organization, but please select the one that is most relevant for you.
Email — You will use your email address to log in each time you come to ERO. This
email address must be unique to you. This means that you CANNOT use someone
elseʼs email address; you MUST have your own. If you do not have your own email
account, please set one up before continuing further. There are many Internet-based
email providers available. We recommend that you use Gmail. You can sign up for a
Gmail account at: www.gmail.com. All information regarding registrations will be sent
to this email address. Be sure that you accurately input the address and that you
check the email address on a regular basis.

your profile submission to the email address that you provided on your profile. If you
do not receive email confirmation, please contact the Resource Center at
800-237-0178.
After you receive your confirmation email, you may log in with your email address
and the PIN that you created and request enrollment in any of the available courses/
sessions. You will receive an email confirming your enrollment request for each
course/session. If you need help searching for and enrolling in courses/sessions,
please see the next section of this manual.
Please note that if you attempt to create your profile with any other course
except “For First Time Registrants Only,” you will NOT actually be enrolled in
the course.
Your profile and course/session enrollments will NOT be official until your profile and
course/session enrollment requests are reviewed and approved by the Resource
Center System Administrators. Please allow up to three (3) business days for this to
happen.
During the profile approval process, any online courses and VAECP sessions that
you have taken in the past will be added to your profile. Please review these for
accuracy and completeness once your profile is approved.
Your Blackboard ID will also be inserted into your profile during the profile approval
process.

5. Under “My Schedule,” you can see four (4) types of enrollments: Enrolled, SelfPaced Sessions, Requested, and Waiting List.
• Enrolled are the sessions for which you have successfully registered and are
scheduled to attend.
• Self-Paced Sessions are the online courses for which you have successfully
registered. Note that while some of these courses are truly self-paced, such as the
policy trainings and assessment certifications, others are facilitated online courses
with set beginning and end dates and an expectation of weekly participation.
• Requested are the sessions for which you have requested enrollment but have not
yet been approved. When you have been approved for the session, it will move to
the Enrolled or Self-Paced Sessions area. You should NOT attend any session that
does not appear in your Enrolled or Self-Paced Sessions area.
• Waiting List are the sessions for which you have requested enrollment but that
have already reached enrollment capacity. If a registered participant drops from the
session, you may be moved to registered status depending on your place within
the waiting list. If this occurs, you will receive an email confirming your registration.

registered, you must go into ERO and drop yourself from the course/session no
later than the close of business (5 pm) two (2) days before the scheduled course/
session.
If you have an emergency situation that will prevent you from attending your course/
session, please call the Resource Center at 800-237-0178 to let them know. If you do
not drop yourself or call the Resource Center, you will be counted as a No Show, which
could affect your ability to participate in future courses/sessions.

Viewing and Completing Evaluations
After each course/session in which you participate, you will need to complete an
evaluation through ERO. If you do not complete the evaluation, you will not be
counted as having completed. The course/session will not display under “My
Transcript” as a course that you have completed. The exceptions to this are the selfpaced assessment/policy certification trainings. They will show under the Certification/
Endorsement Information section of your transcript but will not appear under completed
courses. You must complete the evaluation in order for your course completion to be
fully counted.
It is important that you complete evaluations as soon as possible after you are marked
as having attended the course/session.
If you have any questions while completing your evaluations, please contact the
Resource Center System Administrators at 800-237-0178 or valrcero@vcu.edu.

Viewing My Transcript and Printing Certificates
You may view your transcript of courses/sessions taken with the Resource Center.
Please note that most of your courses/sessions taken before the implementation of
ERO will NOT be available. The exceptions to this will be all online courses and Virginia
Adult Educator Certification Program sessions. Those courses will be added to your
transcript before your profile is approved. If you do not see these courses on your
transcript after your profile has been approved, please contact the Resource Center
System Administrators at 800-237-0178 or valrcero@vcu.edu.
You will also be able to print your own certificates for courses/sessions completed. The
Resource Center will NOT be issuing certificates for courses/sessions by mail or
at face-to-face trainings. You may print your own certificate when needed from ERO.
Note about certificates for self-paced certification courses: These courses are run
on the quarter. The certificates print the date of the last day of the quarter and NOT your
actual date of completion. If you need to show verification of your completion, please
print your My Transcript page, which will list your date of completion under the
Certification/Endorsement Information section.
If you have any questions while viewing your transcript or printing your certificates,
please contact the Resource Center System Administrators at 800-237-0178 or

Blackboard
The Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center uses VCUʼs Blackboard system to deliver
all online training. Blackboard is a separate system from ERO. The two systems are
linked by the staff at the Resource Center. Communication between the two
systems is not automatic. For this reason, it may take up to three (3) business days to
process any requests for enrollment and course completions in Blackboard.
Blackboard is NOT compatible with Internet Explorer. It is highly recommended
that you download Mozillaʼs free Firefox browser for use with Blackboard. You
may download it at: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
If you must use Internet Explorer, please realize that there may be technical issues that
we cannot resolve due to browser incompatibility and that may affect your ability to
complete courses. To mitigate these issues, please follow these steps to place Internet
Explorer in Compatibility Mode, which may resolve some of the known issues:
* Go to Tools.
* Select Compatibility View Settings.
* Check “Display all websites in Compatibility View”.
* Close.
* You will need to close and reopen the browser before the change takes effect.
The Resource Center offers three types of online courses through Blackboard.
1.
Facilitated, online courses that are completed at set times over a period of weeks.
There are specific registration periods and running dates for these courses. You
may see a schedule of these courses at: http://www.valrc.org/trainings/
onlinecourses.html
2.
Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program afterwork courses, which are
completed after attendance at Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program faceto-face sessions.
3.
Non-facilitated, self-paced online courses that are available at any time.
Registration is ongoing for these courses, which are assessment and policy
certifications.
If you have any questions about Blackboard, please contact the Resource Center
System Administrators at 800-237-0178 or valrcero@vcu.edu.

Blackboard Course Completion
Requirements for course completion are dependent upon the type of online course
within which you are working.
If you have any questions about course completion in Blackboard, please contact the
Resource Center System Administrators at 800-237-0178 or valrcero@vcu.edu.
Facilitated, Online Courses Spanning Several Weeks
• After you have completed all course requirements, which are outlined in the course
schedule for each course, the content and technical facilitators will determine your
eligibility for completion. The facilitators will mark you as attended when they have
determined that you have met all requirements. You will receive an email confirming
your completion and you will then be able to complete your course evaluation and
print your certificate.
Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program Afterwork
• Upon review and acceptance of your afterwork submission, the reviewer(s) will mark
you as having attended the session in ERO. You will receive an email confirming your
completion and acceptance of your afterwork. You will then be able to register for the
next face-to-face session.
Non-Facilitated, Self-Paced Online Courses
• Upon completion of all quizzes, you must send an email to VALRC at
valrcero@vcu.edu informing the Resource Center staff of your course
completion. The Resource Center staff will then assess your eligibility for completion.
You will be marked attended when it has been determined that you have successfully
completed all quizzes.

Responding to Reviewer Feedback and Modifying Afterwork
Blackboard is where you will submit all of your afterwork and where the reviewers will
provide you feedback about your progression through the process. Only you and the
reviewers can view your journal entries. You are not able to see other participantsʼ
entries and they cannot see yours.
If you have any questions while working on modifying your afterwork in Blackboard,
please contact the Resource Center System Administrators at 800-237-0178 or
valrcero@vcu.edu.
After you have submitted your afterwork, the reviewers will go over your work. If
it is approved, they will comment in Blackboard as well as change your status in
ERO to reflect your completion. You will receive an email through ERO confirming
that you have been marked as attended. If you have not received this email after
one week, you will need to login to see if there are reviewer comments about
modifications that should be made. Bear in mind that there may be times when
the high volume of submissions leads to slower response times from reviewers.
If you need to ask further clarifying questions of the reviewer or re-submit your modified
afterwork, follow the instructions below:
1. Log into Blackboard and go to the Afterwork Journal.
2. In the box to the right of the screen, you can see if there are any new entries since
you last logged in. You can also see an indicator of new comments at the bottom of
the screen attached to your entry.
!

50
3. Click on “Comments” to expand the screen and see the reviewerʼs comment as
shown below.
4. If the afterwork is approved, you are done!
If the reviewer asks for clarification, you can respond in the text boxes to hold a
conversation with the reviewers to make sure that you are clear on what they are
wanting you to do. To respond, click on the “Comment” button and type your
response in the text box as shown below.
5. Once you are ready to submit your modified afterwork, follow the steps in the
Submitting the Afterwork Documents (pp. 46 - 50) and create a new journal entry.

Self-Selected Workshop Guidelines
A requirement for the Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program is that you
participate in a workshop/training that you select for yourself. You must complete one
self-selected workshop per level of certification.
The self-evaluation that you completed as part of the certification program should guide
you in selecting your additional training. Your self-selected course might be one that
offers more knowledge and information on some aspect of a topic covered in one of the
certification workshops. It could address something you have recently become
interested in or exposed to. It might focus on building a skill or using a technique that
had been unfamiliar to you.
Your self-selected workshop must adhere to these criteria:
• Your self-selected course must be at least 3 hours in duration.
• It may be taken in a face-to-face or online format.
• Trainings that are required by state policy (such as TABE, CASAS, BEST Plus,
or trainings in the From Intake to Assessment series) will not fulfill the selfselected course requirement.
• The workshop should be one that you have not taken before.
• You must attend Session 1 of the level of certification you are pursuing before
selecting your additional workshop for that level.
• Self-selected workshops may be offered by the Virginia Adult Learning
Resource Center.
• If the training you select is not one offered by the Virginia Adult Learning
Resource Center, you may be asked to provide additional information about the
training by one of our reviewers.
If you have any questions about selecting your Self-Selected Workshop, please contact
Kate Daly (kedaly@vcu.edu) for the ABE/GED Instructor strand, Nancy Faux
(nfaux@vcu.edu) for the ESOL Instructor strand, and Vicky Sanborn
(vjsanbor@vcu.edu) for the Program Manager strand at 800-237-0178.
You must submit your Self-Selected Workshop Documentation form on Blackboard as
described in the following pages.

Submitting Your Self-Selected Workshop Documentation Form
You will submit your Self-Selected Workshop Documentation Form just as you have
submitted other documents for your VAECP afterwork.
You will find the Self-Selected Workshop Documentation Form located along with the
other Afterwork Documents in the Afterwork Documents section of your Blackboard
afterwork course. There is one form for Level I and another form for Level II. For more
specific instructions on how to submit your Self-Selected Workshop forms, please see
the following sections: Downloading the Afterwork Documents (pp. 42 - 44), Filling In the
Afterwork Documents (p. 45), and Submitting the Afterwork Documents (pp. 46 - 50).

Glossary
There are a number of terms associated with ERO and Blackboard. Please see below
for clarification of the meaning of those terms.
Certification/Endorsement Information
Certification/Endorsement Information is a section located near the top of your transcript
in ERO. Your assessment/policy certifications will be listed here, with the issue date and
expiration date. The information inputted here allows ERO to send you an automated
email 30 days before an assessment/policy certification expiration to remind you to
request enrollment in the assessment/policy certification refresher. It is NOT associated
with the Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program.
Courses
Courses are the names given in ERO to the individual trainings offered by the Resource
Center. Sessions are the individual occurrences of a course.
Curriculum Categories
Curriculum categories are used to help you find courses/sessions that are relevant to
your work.
When searching for trainings, you may choose to search just within one of these
categories to narrow your search. Courses may be associated with more than one
curriculum category, although they will have only one primary curriculum category.
The current curriculum categories are as follows:
• ABE/GED
• All courses appropriate for ABE or GED instructors
• ASSESS
• All courses dealing with assessment certification
• DCE
• All courses solely for the Department of Correctional Education
• ESOL
• All courses appropriate for ESOL instructors
• GEN
• All courses that donʼt fall into a specific category or have universal application
• MEETING
• All courses that are meetings
!

From Intake to Achievement
From Intake to Achievement is an umbrella course which houses separate nonfacilitated, self-paced online courses offered by the Resource Center. While they are
housed in one location on Blackboard and available to you when you are entered into
the From Intake to Achievement Blackboard course, you must request enrollment in
each training separately in ERO. The courses offered here are:
From Intake to Achievement: Virginia Assessment Policy Training, Online Initial
From Intake to Achievement: Virginia Assessment Policy Training, Online Refresher
From Intake to Achievement: Virginia Goal-Setting Policy Training, Online Initial
From Intake to Achievement: Virginia Goal-Setting Policy Training, Online Refresher
From Intake to Achievement: TABE Certification Training, Forms 9 & 10, Online Initial
From Intake to Achievement: TABE Certification Training, Forms 9 & 10, Online Refresher
Also available in From Intake to Achievement is the Guide to the Virginia Adult Content
Standards. This is a self-paced, non-facilitated resource that provides you with
information about the Virginia Adult ESOL Content Standards, the Virginia Adult GED
Content Standards and the Common Core standards. You do not need to register for
this training in ERO.
Mark Attended
When your course/session completion has been verified, you are marked attended in
ERO.
Mark Reviewed
Mark Reviewed is a feature used heavily in the Blackboard courses. You must click on
this “Mark Reviewed” link to indicate that you have read some information. This action
makes the next course component visible to you. You cannot progress through the
courses unless you first click on the “Mark Reviewed” link. Clicking on this link has
sometimes proven problematic when using Internet Explorer. We recommend that you
download Mozillaʼs free Firefox browser at: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Out of District Transfer
Out of District Transfers are those professional development activities in which you
participate that are not offered by the Resource Center. You have the ability to add
these efforts to your transcript. Please note that the Resource Center does not issue
certificates for nor endorse these professional development efforts.
Sessions
Sessions are the unique instances of the courses offered by the Resource Center.
There can be multiple sessions of one course offered at different times, places in
Virginia, or formats (online or face-to-face).
SRN
SRN stands for Session Registration Number. This is a unique number generated for
each session and is often the easiest way to search for a session that you wish to
attend.
