To apply, you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA qualifies you for most state and federal grants, loans and scholarship programs. 1 Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants Provides grants for undergraduates with the lowest Expected Family Contributions and gives priority to students receiving PELL Grant Awards. South Carolina State Need-Based Grant Provides additional financial aid to SC residents with demonstrated need. LOANS William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans Provides subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Subsidized loans are based on financial need established by the student in an eligible program of study who meets academic progress requirements. Expected family contribution on the FAFSA determines need. No interest accrues before repayment begins. Unsubsidized loans are not need-based. Interest accrues from the date the loan is disbursed. Eligible students must be enrolled at least half-time. 2 Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) Provides unsubsidized loans for the parents of dependent students. PLUS loans are awarded to help pay for educational expenses up to the cost of attendance minus all other financial assistance. Interest accrues during all periods. STUDENT EMPLOYMENT Federal Work Study Provides part-time jobs to financially eligible undergraduates. Students may work 15 – 20 hours a week. Employment is determined by academic progress, class schedule, and total award. Awards depend on availability of funds. Jobs may be on-campus or offcampus. Students must be enrolled at least half-time. SCHOLARSHIPS STATE SCHOLARSHIPS South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance Program Provides partial tuition to students attending South Carolina Technical Colleges. Federal and State need-based funds must be awarded prior to LTAP funds. LTAP is not need-based. South Carolina residents must be enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours) in an eligible academic program and must meet academic progress requirements. Not available to S.C. LIFE Scholars. 3 South Carolina LIFE Scholarship South Carolina provides LIFE scholarships to high school students who graduate with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and who meet college-level (101 or above) course load and academic progress requirements. A maximum of four semesters of LIFE eligibility is allowed for associate degrees and two semesters for one-year diplomas and certificates. SAT scores are not required for technical college students. Beginning summer 2015, students who are in two-year programs of study may be eligible to receive one of their remaining two terms of eligibility during the summer to accelerate to graduation. SC National Guard College Assistance Program Provides financial assistance to members of the South Carolina Army and Air National Guard by providing incentives for enlisting or remaining for a specified time in either the South Carolina Army or Air National Guard. Recipients may receive up to a maximum of four thousand five hundred dollars ($4,500) for the Army National Guard and up to a maximum of nine thousand ($9,000) for the Air National Guard per year. The cumulative total of all college assistance program benefits may not exceed eighteen thousand ($18,000). NON-MTC SCHOLARSHIPS Many private organizations offer scholarships. Willson Scholarship The scholarship provides an award to a full-time rising second-year student only. The student must have earned one-half the total credit hours required in an associate degree program by the beginning of the fall semester. The student must have a 3.0 GPA minimum or B average. Preference is given to students who are actively participating in campus-sponsored student activities, organizations, external community service activities and other activities that demonstrate both civic awareness and support of the college. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Scholarship The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Scholarship Endowment was established by the Association of Information Technology Professionals to students with financial need. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time, continuing 4 student in the Information Systems Technology or Computer Technology programs. The student must have a 3.0 GPA minimum or B average and must have completed 12 credit hours in CPT or IST courses. The scholarship will cover the tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. BFS Auto Supply Scholarship The BFS Auto Supply Scholarship Fund was established by BFS Retail & Commercial Operations and the Bridgestone/Firestone Trust Fund for the support of general scholarships to attract students to the Automotive Technologies program to students with financial need. The scholarship provides one (1) award in the amount of $800 per year to a full-time newly entering or continuing student in the Automotive Technology program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA minimum or B average. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Bill Hayes Memorial Scholarship The Bill Hayes Memorial Endowment was established by Sandra Hayes McDowell in loving memory of her son, Bill Hayes, to a student with financial need. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time, newly entering student in any associate degree program. The student must have a 2.5 GPA minimum or C+ average and be a graduate of Lexington High School. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Bill Lind Scholarship The Bill Lind Scholarship Endowment was established by the faculty and staff of Midlands Technical College in memory of Bill Lind, a well-respected instructor in Commercial Graphics, who was killed in an automobile accident. The scholarship provides one award to a full-time continuing student (must have completed a minimum of one full semester of Commercial Graphics courses) in the Commercial Graphics program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Burroughs-Wyman Scholarship The Burroughs-Wyman Endowment was established in 1978 in memory of Emmaline Burroughs-Wyman, an instructor of English and an advisor to women at Midlands Technical College. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time, continuing student in any associate degree program. The student must have a 3.5 GPA minimum or B+ average. Preference is given to female students (preference is waived if such a student is not available among the pool of applicants). Student must have earned approximately one-half the total credit hours required in the program as of the beginning of the fall semester. Carpentry Framing Scholarship Charles Palmer Communities in Schools Established by the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia to support active training of skilled residential construction workers. The Charles Palmer Communities in Schools Endowment was established by the Palmer College Corporation to further the educational advancement of individuals who have not found advancement in the traditional high school environment. The scholarship provides awards to full-time or part-time, newly entering student only in any associate degree program or certificate program. The student must have a 2.5 GPA minimum or C+ average. The student must provide a current transcript and a letter of recommendation from the Communities in School Advisory panel. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials and supplies. Christine Hipp Scholarship The Christine Hipp Endowment Fund was established by faculty, staff and students of Midlands Technical College in memory of Christine Hipp, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident shortly before receiving her degree in Dental Hygiene. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time continuing student (second year) starting the third or fourth semester curriculum in the Dental Hygiene associate degree program during the Fall semester. The student must have a 2.5 GPA minimum or C+ average. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. D.L. Scurry Foundation Scholarship The DL Scurry Foundation Endowment was established by the D.L. Scurry Foundation of Greenville, South Carolina to assist students with a demonstrated financial need. The scholarship provides four (4) awards to a full-time or part-time continuing student in any academic program. The student must have a 2.0 GPA or C average. Must have completed at least 12 credit hours of study. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees and books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Derrick Family Scholarship The Derrick Family Scholarship Endowment was established by Ellison Robinson, a professor at Midlands Technical College and the Derrick Family to provide financial need assistance for someone who is legally blind. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time, newly entering or continuing student in any associate degree or certificate program or academic courses. The student must be legally blind and have supporting documentation. The 6 scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Don Morris Scholarship Established by the Rotary Club of Cayce-West Columbia in honor of Don H. Morris to provide scholarships for deserving students in the Cayce-West Columbia area. Dorothy G. Smith Scholarship The Dorothy G. Smith Scholarship Endowment was established by Tom Davis and Dorothy Smith, faculty members in the Developmental Studies Department, to assist students with financial need in furthering their education. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time newly entering or continuing student in any associate degree or certificate program. The student must have a 2.5 GPA or C+ average. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees and books, equipment, materials, and supplies. The Engineering Technology Endowment was established by Engineering Technology Division faculty to recognize academic excellence in the study of Engineering Technology. The scholarship provides one (1) award to full-time or part-time continuing students. The students must have earned approximately one-half the total credit hours required in the program as of the beginning of the Fall semester in the Engineering Technologies or Engineering Transfer associate degree program. Hollings Scholarship For Continuing Students The Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship for Continuing Students Endowment was established by the Midlands Technology College Foundation in honor of Senator Ernest F. Hollings. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time (rising second-year student; must have earned approximately one-half the total credit hours required) - continuing student in the Industrial and Engineering Technologies, Engineering Transfer, Business, or Information Systems Technology associate degree program. The student must have a 3.5 GPA minimum or B+ average. Applicant must hold highest cumulative GPA in their academic division. Preference will be given as follows: if two or more eligible recipients hold the same highest cumulative GPA, selection will be based upon the extent of their involvement in campus-based activities/organizations and in community service. Hollings Scholarship for Newly Entering Students Endowment was established by the Midlands Technology College Foundation in honor of Senator Ernest F. Hollings, who is 7 considered to be the father of technical education in South Carolina. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time newly entering student in any associate degree program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average and an academic ranking in the upper one-fourth of their graduating class. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Ernie Dennison Scholarship The Ernie Dennison Scholarship Endowment was established by his wife, Laura Dennison, in support of the MTC Carpentry Framer Program to support students who demonstrate a sincere and genuine appreciation for learning and pursuing a career in the honorable profession of carpentry. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or above. One (1) scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Eunice Primus-Robinson Scholarship The Eunice Primus-Robinson Scholarship was established by her children and the Association of Afro-American Students at Midlands Technical College in honor of her commitment to furthering the education of the minority student population. The Fairfield Electric Cooperative Scholarship Fund was established by Fairfield Electric Cooperative for the support of general scholarships for students from their service area. The scholarship provides one (1) award in the amount of $750 per year to a full-time or part-time, newly entering or continuing student in any certificate or degree program or academic courses. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average. The student or parent of the student must be a member of the Fairfield Electric Cooperative and must provide proof by sending a copy of an electric bill. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Fairfield Electric Cooperative Scholarship Ford Addison Weeks Memorial Nursing Scholarship The Ford Addison Weeks Memorial Nursing Endowment was established by Jack and Shirley Weeks in memory of their son, Ford Addison Weeks, who was born with Spina Bifida, but whose life is an example of the human spirit triumphing over adversity. Mr. and Mrs. Weeks created this scholarship fund in order to assist needy and worthy people in their training and education in the field of nursing. The scholarship provides six (6) awards to a full-time newly entering or continuing student (continuing students must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours in either nursing program) in the Associate Degree Nursing or Practical Nursing programs. The student must have a 2.5 GPA or C+ average. Preference will be given to nursing students currently employed at Still Hopes, an Episcopal retirement community located in West 8 Columbia, South Carolina. Wooldridge Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established by Catherine U. Wooldridge, MTC retiree, in loving memory of her husband, George D. Wooldridge, a wellrespected and loved administrator and professor at Midlands Technical College. This scholarship will be given to a student with financial need. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time newly entering or continuing student in any Business or Industrial program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average. Greater Columbia Dental Association Scholarship The Greater Columbia Dental Association Endowment was established on March 21, 1991 by the Greater Columbia Dental Association for the purpose of advancing excellence in the Allied Dental Education Program (ADEP). The scholarship provides an award to a student with financial need in the Allied Dental Program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA. Henry A. and Pauline H. Goodall Memorial Scholarship The Henry A. and Pauline H. Goodall Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in honor of Dr. Henry Goodall, a long-time Department Head of the Dental Auxiliaries Program at Midlands Technical College, to assist a student in financial need. The scholarship provides one (1) award to a full-time or part-time continuing student in the Dental Hygiene associate degree or Dental Assisting diploma program. HVAC Endowment Fund Scholarship The HVAC Endowment Fund Endowment was established by the Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Wholesalers Association. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time newly entering or continuing student in the HVAC associate degree program. The student must have a 2.5 GPA minimum or C+ average. Hudgins Scholarship Endowment was established by the faculty and staff of Midlands Technical College in honor of Dr. James L. Hudgins, former President of MTC, for his contributions to the college. The scholarship provides one (1) award to a continuing student James L. Hudgins Scholarship 9 (completion of 12 credit hours) in any associate degree program. Courson, South Carolina Senator, to assist students with financial need in furthering their education. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Joseph J. Mallini Paralegal Program Support Scholarship The Joseph J. Mallini Paralegal Program Support Scholarship Endowment was established by the Center for Child Care Career Development to assist students with financial need. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time newly entering or continuing student in the Paralegal Program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average. Judith Lindau Scholarship The Judith Lindau Scholarship Endowment was established by Judith Litman Lindau, an attorney and member of the Midlands Technical College Commission, to provide financial assistance to women who require retraining for the workforce. The scholarship will provide awards to a fulltime or part-time newly entering or continuing student in any associate degree or certificate program. Preference will be given to women who need to be trained for the workforce, or who have been out of the workforce and need to be retrained in order to provide for their family. Consideration will be given to a female, age 30 or older who was raised in a single-parent home. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, and supplies. Jules W. Lindau III Memorial Engineering Scholarship The Jules W. Lindau III Memorial Engineering Scholarship Endowment was established in memory of Jules W. Lindau III for his role in helping found and nurture Midlands Technical College. The scholarship will provide awards to a full-time or part-time continuing student (must have completed at least 12 credit hours of Engineering Technology courses) in the Engineering Technology associate degree program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average. Established by the MTC Foundation to reward students who have participated in Junior Junior Achievement 10 Achievement. Kirby Able Scholarship The Kirby Able Endowment was established in memory of Kirby Able’s role as an advisor to young men with financial need. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time, newly entering students in any associate degree program. The student must have a 2.0 GPA minimum or C average. Preference is given to a male high school graduate under the age of 21 who grew up in a single-parent household. Reference should be stated in the application essay section - preference is waived if such a student is not available among the pool of applicants, in which case age and financial need will prevail. If not awarded to a Rice Estate employee, scholarship may be awarded to applicant pursuing a degree or certification in the healthcare field. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time newly entering or continuing student in the Telecommunications Infrastructure Certificate or the TSM Degree. MTC Ambassador Assembly Support Scholarship Established in 1995 by MTC faculty and staff and members of the MTC Ambassador Assembly to create scholarships for deserving members of the MTC Ambassador Assembly. MTC Presidential Merit Scholarship Endowment The MTC Presidential Scholarship Endowment was established in 1974 by local area businesses and industries, MTC faculty and staff, and other private donors to provide a merit scholarship for an outstanding MTC student. It is the college's most prestigious scholarship. The scholarship provides an award to a newly entering or continuing student in any associate degree, certificate program or academic courses. Newly entering students must have a 3.8 GPA from their most recent school attended. Continuing students must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Preference will be given to 13 students with demonstrated participation in campus based and extracurricular leadership positions and community service activities. MTC Retiree Scholarship The Retiree Fund Scholarship was established by retirees of Midlands Technical College to provide scholarships to deserving students. The scholarship provides one (1) award in the amount of $500 per year to a full-time or part-time newly entering or continuing student in any certificate or associate degree program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average. Preference will be given to MTC employees, retirees, and their dependents. Vann Memorial Nursing Scholarship The Paul Vann Memorial Nursing Scholarship Endowment was established by Joanne V. Williams in memory of her brother, Paul Baggett Vann, and in honor of the nurses at Providence Hospital to provide financial support for the further training and educational pursuits of students who plan to work with surgical patients. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time or part-time continuing student in the Associate Degree Nursing Program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or B average. Preference will be given to students who plan to work with surgical patients. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees, books, equipment, materials, supplies, workshops, seminars, training retreats or other methods that will advance the knowledge and expertise required by the nursing student. Paul J. Boan Memorial Art Education Scholarship The Paul J. Boan Memorial Art Education Scholarship was established by Teresa Boan Alsing, a graduate of the Associate in Arts degree program at MTC, and her husband, Maurice O. Alsing, Jr., to assist deserving students in pursuing a career in Art Education. The scholarship provides one (1) award in the amount of $250 per year to continuing students in Associate in Arts degree program. The student must have a 3.0 GPA minimum or B average. The Ralph D. Levine Endowment Fund was established by Dr. Ralph D. Levine to provide financial assistance to students in the Dental Hygiene associate degree program who have demonstrated sound academic performance and who have a strong desire to serve the dental needs of the community. The scholarship provides an award to a full-time continuing student in the Dental Hygiene associate degree program. The recipient must be a resident of Richland, Lexington or Fairfield county. Riley Educational Talent Search/Educational Opportunity Center/Upward Bound Scholarship Endowment was established by the Midlands Technology College Foundation in honor of U.S. Secretary of Education and former Governor of South Carolina, Richard W. Riley. The scholarship provides awards in the amount of $1,000 per year to a fulltime or part-time newly entering (for ETS and Upward Bound) or continuing student (for EOC) in any associate degree program. The student must have a 2.5 GPA or C+ average. Must be actively enrolled in the Midlands Technical College Educational Talent Search or Educational Opportunity Center programs or must have participated in the Upward Bound program at the time of application for this scholarship. The applicant must provide a current transcript, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or community leader, and one of the following -a letter of proof of enrollment in the Educational Talent Search, a letter of proof of enrollment in the Educational Opportunity Center program or a letter of proof of participation in the Upward Bound Program. The Robert E. McNair Scholarship Endowment was established by the Midlands Technical College Foundation in honor of former Governor Robert E. The scholarship provides one (1) award in the amount of $1250 per year to a full-time newly entering or continuing student in the Automotive Technology program. The Rosi McLeod Scholarship Endowment was established by Mary Rawls, Program Director for the Human Services Program, in memory of her mother, Rosi McLeod, who was very supportive of human services work; this scholarship was created as a way for her support to live on through others. The scholarship provides one (1) award in the amount of $750 per year to a full-time or part-time rising secondyear student (must have completed 12 credit hours) in the Human Services Program. The Sarah Rhames Book Fund for Business Students Scholarship Endowment was established in memory of Sarah Rhames by her children for the purpose of providing textbooks for students in any business or business-related program. This endowed scholarship was established in 2006 by Dr. Ronald L. Rhames, MTC Senior Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Operating Officer for the Business Program. The scholarship provides four awards in the amount of $300 per year to a full-time or part-time, newly entering or continuing student(s) in the Business Program to include Accounting, Management or Marketing. SC State Fair Scholarship The SC State Fair Scholarship Endowment was established by the South Carolina State Fair to assist students at MTC in the Industrial Technology programs. This scholarship will be given to a student with financial need. The scholarship provides one (1) award in the amount of $750 per year to a full-time or part-time continuing student in the Industrial Technologies to include HVAC, Building Construction Technology, Commercial Graphics, Automotive Technology, Industrial Electricity and Machine Tool Technology. The student must have a 2.0 GPA or C average.
