Meals will become a much more pleasant experience for students at the University of Rhode Island (URI) thanks to an $8 million expansion of Butterfield Dining Hall. Previously, meal lines snaked out the door and students had to bear New England's rain and snow while waiting for their meals. The expansion will provide students with an indoor waiting area and more elbow room to eat their meals upon its completion later this year. DiPrete Engineering handled the site engineering for the threephased project. The upgrade added 7,500 square feet to the existing building, a paved plaza for greater pedestrian access between the dining hall and residence hall, and an expansion of the loading dock. DiPrete Engineering's scope of work included the schematic design, design development, utility research and design, grease trap design, construction documentation, and LEED submittals. The project architect was Vision 3 Architects and landscape architect was Birchwood Design Group. "Partnering with Vision 3 and Birchwood Design, our team was able to design the best possible solutions for every phase of this project," said Molly Titus, a Project Manager at DiPrete Engineering. Currently, the Sanctuary and meeting halls are located on opposite ends of the building. Handicap accessibility to the various uses in the building is limited and burdensome. The children's playground is located across a busy driveway. Also, with two ancient heating systems and single-pane windows, the building is not energy efficient. Enter the team of DiPrete Engineering and Colin Smith Architecture, who are now taking the church's vision for the future and designing a more functional, efficient and harmonious site. "We're using our team's expertise to identify creative, cost-savings solutions for the client," said Brian Timm, a Senior Project Manager at DiPrete Engineering. DiPrete Engineering is providing pre-construction survey and civil engineering services, design development of an underground storm water management system, site grading to meet A.D.A. requirements, and assisting with the permitting and entitlement process. Construction will begin in the next few months. "Working together with Colin Smith Architecture, we've been able to attain the best possible results for the client to fulfill their vision for the future of Needham Church," said Molly Titus, Project Manager at DiPrete Engineering.
