Dear WNIT Supporters:
Now that we’re getting some warm weather and the flowers are blooming, I feel a new spirit in the
air. People seem to have energy again! We’re feeling it at WNIT, too.
I was recently on a long flight returning to Michiana, thinking about WNIT, and giving special
thought to our children’s programming. Lately, I’ve been hearing from several parents telling me
how much they appreciate the curriculum-based children’s programming WNIT provides, and
how they observe their kids learning and growing from it.
I am sometimes troubled by claims from some children’s channels that their programs are
“educational.” Perhaps there are some nuggets of knowledge on those channels, but our PBS
programs have an actual curriculum plan, with each episode building upon the other with
achievement goals for these young viewers. In addition to the broadcast version of each program,
children can go online and practice the lessons they learned on TV. Plus, there are apps for
smart phones/tablets, and games. All this is free to kids, thanks to your support of WNIT.
I wish every child could attend an early childhood development program, but that is not the case.
Perhaps 15-20% of all kids get to attend. For the remaining 80%, WNIT is there for them. Regular
viewers of PBS children’s programs score higher on pre-kindergarten tests than non-viewers. I’m a
regular viewer in my office each day!
The business model for other children’s channels is to carry advertising messages to “sell to”
children. Our business model relies on donations so we may educate children. There’s a big
difference. We all thank you for making this possible with your contributions to WNIT.
If you are a parent or grandparent, and your children are watching television, put them in front of
WNIT’s children’s programming. They will find safe viewing designed to inspire and educate, and
make them laugh too. So many good things happen when you support WNIT. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Carmi Murphy

“Shark Mountain” – May 7
Underwater filmmakers Howard and Michele Hall have spent 25 years diving
and documenting the most remote and beautiful underwater locations. Yet
even these remote places and creatures are at risk in today’s world. The Halls
take viewers along on the dive of a lifetime, to a tiny outpost 300 miles off the
coast of Central America — Shark Mountain.
“American Eagle” – May 28
Unique to North America, the bald eagle is the continent’s most
recognizable aerial predator, with a shocking white head, electric yellow
beak and penetrating eyes. In the 1960s, this symbol of the United States
became an emblem of environmental degradation, as the pesticide DDT and
other human pressures brought it to the brink of extinction. Following their
protection as an endangered species, bald eagles have come roaring back.

“Escape From Nazi Alcatraz”
– May 14
Colditz Castle, a notorious prisoner of war
camp in Nazi Germany, was supposed to be
escape-proof. But in World War II, a group of
British officers dreamt up an escape plan: in a
secret attic workshop, they constructed a twoman glider out of bed sheets and floorboards.
The plan was to fly to freedom from the roof of
the castle, but the war ended before they could
put it to the test. Now, after a 70-year wait, the
team finally finds out if the legendary glider
plan would have succeeded.

historian and Harvard president Drew Gilpin
Faust’s acclaimed book, “Death and the Civil
War” explores a critical aspect of the Civil War

D-DAY UNCOVERED
Tuesday, May 27, 9pm
D-Day was a logistical effort on a scale never
seen before or since. On the day itself, 14,000
planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind
German lines, and 5,000 ships delivered
30,000 military vehicles and 160,000 soldiers
onto the beaches. Once on the shore, the troops
had to negotiate six million mines buried in
the sand, 500,000 fearsome beach obstacles
and hundreds of miles of barbed wire, while
dodging the shells and bullets fired by half-amillion German defenders.

that plagued the nation.

down by polio. Nancy Buirski’s radiant film
finds a tone to match Tanny’s exquisite dancing
and long, lovely physique, well represented in
photos, home movies and kinescopes.
SECRETS OF
THE LONDON
UNDERGROUND
Sunday, June 22, 8pm
On the surface, London is a buzzing, modern
metropolis — but underneath lies a secret,
hidden world, all but forgotten by the millions
of people above. This program uncovers 2,000
years of subterranean history: a world of ancient
caves and perfectly preserved Roman remains;
mysterious rivers and gruesome plague pits;
impenetrable vaults and top-secret bunkers.

SURVIVING THE
TSUNAMI: A NOVA
SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Wednesday, June 25, 10pm
The earthquake that hit the northern coast
of Japan on March 11, 2011, was recorded at
magnitude 9.0 — the worst ever recorded in
Japan. It generated an unprecedented tsunami,
obliterating coastal villages and towns in a
matter of minutes. In some areas, the tsunami
climbed over 100 feet in height and traveled miles
inland. Amazingly, amateur and professional
photographers captured it all on video.
LAST TANGO IN
HALIFAX, SEASON 2
Sundays, June 29-August 3, 8pm
Episode 1
As Alan and Celia seize the day, Gillian spirals
into a dark place as skeletons surface. Caroline’s
fractious relationship with John leads her to
rethink living arrangements as she makes a bold
decision involving Kate.
VICIOUS
Sundays, June 29-August 3,
10:30pm
Episode 1
Freddie and Stuart host a wake. Joined by
their small circle of elderly friends, the couple
manages to create a splendidly awkward evening
of meager food and liberal insults. Joining
them is Freddie and Stuart’s young neighbor
Ash, whose sexuality is a point of interest. Ash
spends the evening trying to be a good guest
while fending off the advances of Freddie and
Stuart’s predatory best friend, Violet.

Mystics of the Heartland
to Premiere in June
Join us on Thursday, June 19 at 8pm for the premiere of Mystics
of the Heartland, a series designed to present relevant stories that
resonate with viewers and invite them to explore their own inner
truth. The program will be repeated on June 21 at 4:30pm; the
second episode will air Thursday, June 26 at 8pm and repeated
on June 28 at 4:30pm.
The series intends to provide viewers with interesting, informative
and inspirational programs that invite them to look more deeply
into their own lives and experiences. Each program will present a
topic, such as science, health, music or nature and its relationship
to spirituality and will include unique and personal stories from
people within our own communities and beyond.
Videographers Needed
for Our Town: Dowagiac
WNIT Public Television announced another in its Our Town series,
this time focusing on the city of Dowagiac, Michigan. With the
help of volunteer videographers and a little training from WNIT’s
professional award-winning production team, ordinary citizens
will become volunteer videographers. Armed with their own home
camcorders, they will create a video scrapbook of the stories that
make Dowagiac special. WNIT’s professional staff utilizes these
video recordings, along with interviews held by the producers
with the volunteer videographers, to professionally edit the stories
and produce an hour documentary that reflects the emotional ties
of the people who live, love and are passionate about Our Town:
Dowagiac.
If you or someone you know is interested in being a volunteer
videographer for this project, please contact WNIT at
574.675.9648 or wnit@wnit.org. A videographers’ class will be
held in Dowagiac in early June. At that time, volunteers will learn
shot composition and how to select topics of interest, and they will
choose their assignments.

June 2014 Spring
Membership Campaign
WNIT’s Summer Membership Campaign begins Saturday, May 31
and runs through Sunday, June 8. Our on-air Membership Campaigns
remain the most effective way of encouraging viewers to join the
WNIT family of supporters. While these drives represent less than two
percent of our annual broadcast hours, they do provide WNIT with
the majority of revenue required to purchase and produce the regular
and local programming enjoyed by everyone throughout northern
Indiana and southwestern Michigan.
So get ready to experience an interesting and informative line-up of
special programs for the entire family. And be sure to tell your family
and friends why you think supporting WNIT is important.
It’s Viewers Like You who make a real difference to everyone in our
community.
THANK YOU for supporting WNIT!

Supporter
Rebecca and Michael Kubacki
Spotlight
This month, WNIT shines the Supporter Spotlight on Rebecca and Michael Kubacki, long-time Directors’
Circle members who have welcomed members to their home for various events. Michael served on the
WNIT Board of Directors and helped establish Lake City Bank’s commitment to underwrite important and
challenging programs on WNIT. In addition, Michael helped establish the WNIT Fund for future endowment
contributions. Rebecca is a consultant for a state-wide initiative to help produce a documentary on Hispanics in
the state of Indiana. She also appeared as a guest on Dinner and a Book’s “Hero of the Heartland.”
WNIT salutes Rebecca and Michael Kubacki for their sustained support of WNIT.
Directors’
Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute
to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make
possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
