PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN
Health and Safety Code) HCT 104 (previously ERT 104) prepares the entry level health care practitioner for
certification as a CPT - I. Lecture includes 20 “basic” hours in infection control, safety, circulatory system,
medical terminology, patient and specimen identification and skin puncture, and 20 “advanced” hours in
anatomical site selection and patient preparation, risks and complications, post puncture care, anticoagulation
theory and Quality Assurance. Student will be assigned 40 hours in a clinical setting and must successfully
complete 50 venipunctures, 10 skin punctures, and observation of 1 arterial puncture.
Prerequisites:
ESL 160 or placement in ENGL 93 or ENGL 95; and high school diploma or GED credential. An AA
or AS Degree or higher waives the English requirement. Student must attend an orientation.

Pass rates for student completing the program and sitting for the certification examination are available in the
Office of the Dept. Chair for Health Care Tech. Please contact this office at (415) 561-1967 to review the results.

$46 per semester unit for California residents
$203 per semester unit for non-residents (plus $46 per semester unit enrollment fee)

$114 National Health Career Association Certification Exam Fee
Purchase of lab coat, scrubs and clinical supplies: The cost of appropriate lab uniform and other required clinical
supplies is approximately $150.
