During the 2011 Super Bowl Chrysler had the longest running commercial, totaling two minutes.
The commercial was made by residents from Michigan promoting Michigan, starring Eminem and the
voiceover is Grand Rapids native Kevin Yon
Since 1995 the price of a 30 second commercial during the Super Bowl has tripled, now a whopping
$3,000,000.
“A magnificent tribute to the city that has been plagued by all the ill that an urban area could possibly
face. It‟s a message to stay strong,” said LA times reporter Rick Rojas.
The commercial takes viewers through the heart of Detroit, our very own Motor City, catching glimpses
of I-75, Joe Louis Fist, and Campus Martius Park.
Eminem points at the camera saying, “This is the Motor City, and this is what we do,” and the ultimate
closing of “Imported from Detroit” displays on the screen.
Chrysler had to not only pay roughly 12 million to air the commercial the night of the Super Bowl but an
approximate 9 million to film and produce.
“We weren‟t looking to make him a spokesperson or a sales pitch guy. We wanted him to talk from the
heart, It just felt natural for him to deliver the final line in the script: „This is the Motor City, and this is
what we do,‟” said Melissa Garlick head of Chrysler advertising.RR
