Sincerely, Brett Hamm 2 President, Downtown OKC Inc. Downtown Living in Oklahoma City Downtown Living 4 K.O. Rinearson Y ou’ve heard it said many times in recent years, and you’ve read many of the individual stories, but it certainly bears repeating, if only because the overall story is so impressive: downtown Oklahoma City is an exciting and vibrant place to be. In the 1970s, even a member of the Oklahoma City City Council was heard to say that downtown was dead. In 2008, it is a place pulsing with energy. It offers the arts, a variety of entertainment for almost any taste, professional sports, a fabulous array of food and drink and perhaps most exciting of all, a host of new residential options. Downtown is very much alive. The Arts District offers the magnificently renovated Civic Center Music Hall and the world-class Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Take your pick of sports as well: baseball with the RedHawks, hockey with the Blazers and the excitement of NBA basketball at the Ford Center may soon join the mix. While you’re in a sporting mood, take in a rowing exhibition on the Oklahoma River. So many of downtown’s historic spaces have returned, grander than ever. Stop in at the Skirvin Hilton’s Red Piano Lounge or Park Avenue Grill, or skip over to Soleil in the Colcord Hotel. And when it comes to good food and drink (as well as the hub of the city’s nightlife), Bricktown is a living, breathing testament to downtown’s renaissance. While you’re there, enjoy Bass Pro, Harkins Theatres and the exciting new RedPin Bowling Lounge. Downtown offers the services that support a lifestyle as well, from dry cleaners to fitness centers to salons. Oklahoma City has embraced a surge in all that is urban, reclaiming a city center and forging a new identity that is not only alive, but growing in its spirit, its vitality and perhaps most of all, its sense of community. Dick and Sharon Rodine Brett Price A Downtown Living Q&A The participants: Dick and Sharon Rodine (DSR) and Brett Price (BP) Dick Rodine is Executive Vice President of Interim Solutions for Government (ISG), a consulting firm supporting Federal agencies; Sharon is the Youth Initiatives Director at the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy, a statewide, nonprofit organization that works on behalf of children and youth. Brett Price sells commercial real estate for Sperry Van Ness. Where do you currently live? DSR: We currently live in Norman and have purchased a condominium in Grant Humphreys’ Block 42. We have a 4th floor flat in the center tower, facing south. We will have a terrific view of the downtown skyline… and the July 4th fireworks! BP: The Park Harvey. Why do you choose to live downtown? DSR: We both work in the downtown area. As empty nesters with more free time, we started taking advantage of the events, cultural attractions, restaurants and new commercial ventures downtown – and loved what downtown OKC was becoming! With the emergence of this new urban dynamic and the introduction of architecturally significant residential options, we chose to become part of the downtown community. BP: I have always loved urban areas, and it is so exciting to be a part of a young and emerging downtown. Besides, people in the suburbs look at me sideways when they see me on my Vespa. I don’t see what is so wrong with a guy that’s 6'2" riding a tiny 1964 Vespa… How is it different from living in the suburbs? DSR: The commute for each of us will be three minutes instead of 30+ minutes in I-35 traffic, and there are so many exciting places within walking or biking distance of our new home. BP: Personally, you couldn’t pay me to live in the suburbs. To me there is so much more energy downtown; all around it’s just more exciting. If you get bored, just step outside and things are always happening around you. What is your favorite downtown spot? DSR: Other than our new home in Block 42, our new favorite spot is the Park Harvey Athletic Club. We have become regulars there – exercising, followed by some time relaxing in the hot tub or sauna. Check it out! BP: I am a big people watcher, so that usually draws me to Bricktown. What is your favorite downtown hangout or restaurant? DSR: We have many favorites, including Dick’s morning coffee and bagel at Uncommon Grounds, Sharon’s quick lunch at the new Beatnix Café, drinks at Nonna’s outdoor bar, happy hour with Block 42 neighbors at Deep Deuce Grill and on and on. We have a long list of other favorites…with new restaurants opening that we want to try. BP: Deep Deuce Bar and Grill for a beer or to watch a game; RedPin when I feel like showing off my crazy bowling skills; and Nonna’s if I can ever trick a girl into going to dinner with me. I even pay occasionally. Boxers or briefs? DSR: Dick goes for the boxer-briefs – Sharon isn’t telling! BP: Definitely boxers. Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin? DSR: No contest – the Rolling Stones. BP: Zeppelin. 5 Hadden Hall • 215 N.W. 10th Street The Sieber • N.W. 12th & Hudson Legacy at Arts Quarter • 301 N. Walker Sycamore Square South • 601 Robert S.
