Saf-Tee-Times Volume 15, Issue 17 An Out-Of- Bounds Publication July 28, 2015 “We shall strive to provide total golfer satisfaction by continually monitoring and improving the fun, enjoyment and competitiveness of all our golfing activities. We shall produce and deliver sport and activities which assure the highest level of fun, relaxation and satisfaction.” LOP002 Rev. A It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over The D-Boys Do It Just when you think you’re out… DiRaimo’s best bumped by Dunn Okay, let’s try this again. The Playoffs loom just ahead and we all know not everyone makes it into and/or through that four round Seasonal finale. But if you’re one of the unfortunate few who don’t qualify for that Welsh Cup chase, or are one of the 11 who get bounced out of it, despair not! The Commish is sponsoring a second chance for you to end the Season with a prize: The Commissioner’s Championship. We know it hurts when your best isn’t quite good enough so it’s understandable if the sounds of woe were heard piercing the Foster woods last Wednesday evening. The probable source of those woeful sounds was Tom DiRaimo who carded his best round of the season (45) which posted his highest Points total (11) of the season and put him at the top of the week’s Leader Board… until Joe Dunn walked off the 9th green. Joe also had 11 Points on his card and by virtue of shooting a better than his average 41, he technically takes the week’s top honors. It’s a good thing Joe doesn’t have to go before the Foster Zoning Board. Ten points was the next best total and that also was a close finish with Marc Brassard’s 10 GPs besting Greg Piturro’s 10 GPs by 1-stroke: 40 to 41. Missing the LB by 1-Point is significant for these two as 1Point is what separates them in their respective Divisions from either a share of the lead or its sole possession. With one week remaining for regular season play that one Point could spell the difference of a Week 1 bye or being lumped into the Wild Card round of the Playoffs. The week wasn’t all for naught for Piturro as he prevailed in the Prize Hole (#5) toss-off with Brassard and John Vincent. Next week’s PH is #18. The CC is not new, but it seems each year the membership must be reminded about it. As mentioned above, anyone not eligible for the Playoffs, or who loses a Playoff match is eligible for the CC. This includes Alternates. The bottom line is if you aren’t in the Playoffs or if you are in the Playoffs, but don’t win the Welsh Cup, you’re automatically entered in the CC. It’s that simple. So how does it work? All you have to do is show up and play. The total Points you earn during the four Playoff weeks are what decides the Winner. And Second Place. And Third Place. Again, all you have to do is show up to have a chance to win a prize. The more you show up, the better your chances. Why the CC? There are two reasons the CC is conducted. One, the Season always seems to come to a sudden and abrupt end. It’s like we’re standing on a cold and wet tee in April and then, before we know it, we’re sweating bullets in August asking: “Where’d the Season go?” The CC will give us (especially those of us un-Playoff worthy) to ween ourselves off the Wednesday habit. Two, we’re a seventeen member League (not counting Alternates) and the CC will present a more impressive League image than if the LOP is seen as just two Pikers playing for the Cup in the August gloaming. As Andre Agassi said when he was hawking cameras, “Image is everything.” There is a third reason, but it should go without saying: its golf! Linc no friend to links If Chafee had his way your 250 yard bomb would be only 228.6 (meters). Drain a 45 footer and it goes down as just 13.7 (meters). As George Costanza would say: “Its shrinkage!” Inspirational thoughts He’s no Jack Handey (look it up) but Hootie has some words to help guide us along life’s fairway; to identify what’s important and where to spend our quality time. You may have heard it, but I thought I would share it for those who haven’t. It’s a lesson that we all can learn from. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full... The students responded with a unanimous ‘Yes.’ The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed… ‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else—the small stuff’. ‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life’. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn. Take care of the golf balls first—the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand. One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked. The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with Friends’. And thus, my Friends…the League On the Pike was born! Keep ‘em straight… Hootie said that! Saf-Tee-Time 2
