CHARISMATIC PRAYER
Confession Season
Between now and Holy Week I’ve no ced I have a LOT of confessions
ahead! Next week begins a series of penance services around the region,
concluding with our own on Thursday, March 17 at 7:00, and confession
mes for the children in our parish school. And as I men oned last week,
this Friday and Saturday is the 24 Hours for the Lord event at Christ
Cathedral, where I will also be hearing confessions for a few hours.
So this is a good me to remind everyone of the need for confession, officially called the
Sacrament of Penance. There isn’t a one of us who can say we have no sin. In fact, St. John
wrote that if we claim to be sinless “we make [God] a liar” (1 John 1:10)! How? God sent His
Son into the world to free us from sin, so if we think we are sinless we are deceiving ourselves
and claiming no need for a Savior and Redeemer! God says we are sinners, and if we claim
not to be, then we are calling God a liar! Now, one can progress in virtue to the point where
one has no mortal sin, but that doesn’t mean we’re off the hook and don’t need to keep
working on personal sanc fica on! Even deliberate venial sin is an issue, and le unchecked
can become grave—like not keeping up on li le household chores allows our house to
become a pigsty. You can be overwhelmed by one elephant or by a thousand gnats!
Now I realize there are some who are unable to come to confession because they are not
married in the Church, so no Sacraments may be received. If this is your situa on, please
contact the parish and let us help you resolve this situa on! Not being able to go to
confession or receive Communion causes many to slip away from the prac ce of the faith,
but there is no reason to assume that just because one is not married in the Church that it’s
over and there’s nothing to be done about it! People over the years have been told all kinds
of false informa on, or have concluded on their own, or have used as a handy excuse, “I’m
not married in the Church, so I’m ‘excommunicated.’” This is absolutely not true, and I hope
you will, during this Year of Mercy, to allow the Church to show you mercy through the
healing work of the Church!
I encourage you to read up on the Sacrament of Penance. Ques ons like, “why do I have to
confess to a priest,” “where did this prac ce come from,” “what good will it do for me,” are
all answered in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1434-1470. And if you read
the footnotes and follow the references to other paragraphs in the Catechism, you will learn
plenty about this amazing Sacrament! I hope you will come to Confession during the Lenten
season!

Jennifer Clark, Director of Parish Life
Lent is a me for transforma on- a me that we challenge ourselves to change
something in our lives for the be er and this usually is through some sort of
sacrifice. We join this sacrifice with Jesus as we symbolically walk through the 40
days and nights that he was in the desert. Well I don’t know about you, but the
tempta ons are not symbolic! It is when I am home alone, or home alone at night or maybe
overwhelmed with tasks that the devils tempta ons seem to be at their strongest. It would be
so easy to just give in to tempta on this one me, or one day and it would not be the end of
the world. But how can we also join with the courage and strength of Jesus in these moments
of tempta on? Please contact Jennifer Clark at 562-296-9007 or email
jclark@sainthedwigparish.org to discuss ways to share your me and talent with the parish
community.
