Graves USMC Memorial Scholarship Scholarship Spotlight: Like Father, Like Son MCSF Welcomes Home One of Its Own Calendar of Events New Golf Tournaments 32nd Annual Marine Corps Marathon ONCE A MARINE…ALWAYS A MARINE! Robert J. Stevens, Chairman, President and CEO, Lockheed Martin Corporation Bob Stevens has had a very successful career in the aerospace defense industry that has accorded him with many titles and accolades from business and government. However, in Bob Stevens’ view, perhaps the most meaningful title he has received is the title of Marine when he graduated from basic training at Parris Island in 1969. Not only did he earn the title of Marine, but as a member of the Marine Corps family he understood the importance of “always faithful” and “taking care of your own”. This lifelong education was recently demonstrated when Bob designated a gift of $1 million from the Lockheed Martin Corporation’s Directors Charitable Awards Fund to the Foundation for the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen who have been killed or severely wounded in action. Where does one begin the journey of “once a Marine, always a Marine”? Robert J. Stevens, Chairman, President and CEO, Lockheed Martin Corporation For Bob Stevens it began at age 18 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduation from McKeesport High School in western Pennsylvania. He reported to MCRD Parris Island and graduated as the Outstanding Marine of Platoon 3073. He also was the recipient of the Outstanding Recruit Award for the 3d Battalion given by Leatherneck Magazine. Based upon Bob’s performance in boot camp, he was meritoriously promoted to lance corporal. Upon completion of training as a forward observer at Camp Lejeune, Bob was assigned to the 2d Field Artillery Group, FMF Atlantic and subsequently transferred to Westpac where he joined 3d Battalion, 12th Marines in Okinawa. While with 3/12, Bob was assigned to an infantry company in 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, and as part of the Special Landing Force, traveled to Vietnam and the Philippines. In 1972, he finished his three years of active duty with the III Marine Amphibious Force, FMF Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1975 with the rank of corporal. Following active duty, Bob enrolled in Slippery Rock University and graduated summa cum laude in 1976. Bob subsequently received graduate degrees in engineering, management, and business while pursuing a very distinguished career in the aerospace defense industry culminating in his current position as chairman, president and CEO of the Lockheed Martin Corporation. In recognition of his upholding the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps, Bob received the Foundation’s Globe and Anchor Award at the 2006 Washington, DC Marine Corps Scholarship Gala. Bob has also graciously agreed to serve as a cabinet member of the Foundation’s American Patriots Campaign. We salute Bob Stevens with the words, Semper Fidelis. ©2007. Conway, 34th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. While it was a bit cool and overcast on the golf course, everyone had a great time. Marines were out in force as the evening’s events unfolded in a hangar at the Ft. Lauderdale airport. As the first golf tournament of the 2007 season, the South Florida Golf & Gala grossed over $100,000 and set the stage for another record-breaking year at the Foundation. Boston Area Breakfast The Fourth Annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Breakfast was held on Friday, March 9th, at the Dedham Polo and Country Club in Dedham, Massachusetts. Every year a speaker is recruited to provide “insight into today’s world and our Corps”. This year, Dr. John P. White, Chair of the Kennedy School Middle East Initiative, former Deputy Secretary of Defense, Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget – and former Marine – spoke to the group. Previous speakers have included staff from the Naval War College and Nate Fick, the author of One Bullet Away. The purpose of these seminars is to spread the word about the Foundation and raise funds for scholarships for the children of Marines. Tampa Area Golf Tournament LtCol Mel Long USMC (Ret.) and MCSF Board Member MajGen Gene Deegan USMC (Ret.) led another successful golf tournament at the Tampa Bay Palms Golf and Country Club on Monday, March 26th. The tournament’s military guest of honor was MajGen Tim Ghormley USMC, Chief of Staff, U.S. Central Command. The generosity of this year’s tournament sponsors and players increased net income by 51% over 2006. We are looking for volunteers to help resurrect a golf event in nearby Sarasota which has been dormant for several years. New York Leatherneck Scholarship Ball For 45 years, the New York Leatherneck Scholarship Ball has been setting and raising the bar for fundraising galas and this year was no exception. On Friday, April 20, 2007, Peter DePaola, President of the New York Leatherneck Scholarship Ball, and his committee hosted the grand event in the New York Hilton Hotel Grand Ballroom with 700 in attendance. While the figures are not yet final, it is estimated that this event will net nearly $1 million, the largest of all MCSF fundraising events throughout the year. This year’s honorees included Eric J. Gleacher, Chairman, Gleacher Partners, LLC, who was presented the Colonel Joseph File Memorial Award. Mr. Gleacher’s 40 year career has taken him from prestigious companies such as Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley to the founding of his own company in 1990. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantry officer in the early 1960s. Ms. Bonnie McElveen-Hunter received the Leatherneck Award. Bonnie is the Founder and CEO of Pace Communications, current Chairman of the American Red Cross, and former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Finland (2001-2004). The recipient of the Semper Fidelis Award was H. Ross Perot, Founder, Electronic Data Systems Corporation and the Perot Systems Corporation. As Presidential candidate, author, and philanthropist, Mr. Perot has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to society. This year’s military guest of honor was General James T. Conway, Commandant of the Marine Corps. Local Marines attended the event as well, and the program ended with a spectacular performance by the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps directed by CWO4 Brian Dix. Philadelphia Ball After the wonderful performance in New York, the Drum and Bugle Corps and Color Guard packed their bags and drove through the night to Philadelphia for the 32nd Annual Philadelphia Ball on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The Philadelphia Ball committee led by General Chairman Manning J. Smith, III, and Committee Chairman Craig D. Mills, shattered previous years’ records with nearly 450 attendees. Honorees at the 2007 Philadelphia Ball included Bruce M. Eckert, Barney Berlinger, Jr., Gaspare “Gamp” Pellegrini, and LtGen Ronald S. Coleman USMC. Mr. Eckert, CEO of Eastern Insurance Holdings – a NASDAQ National market-listed company – was the recipient of this year’s Semper Fidelis Award. He served two tours in Vietnam in the late 1960s. Mr. Berlinger, the recipient of the Globe & Anchor Award, served in the Marine Corps from 1961 to 1965. He formed ASI Technologies in 1986 and serves as CEO and President. In 1977, Mr. Berlinger founded Genesis Partners LP and serves as its Managing Partner. The recipient of the Sportsman Award, Mr. Gaspare “Gamp” Pellegrini is the head football coach at Malvern Preparatory School where he has amassed a record of 200-85-8 and was awarded the prestigious Tri-State Coach of the Year by the Philadelphia Maxwell Football Club. Gamp proclaims his active duty Marine Corps service as “the best three years of my life!” As the Military Guest of Honor, LtGen Ronald S. Coleman, Deputy Commandant for Manpower & Reserve Affairs, spoke briefly about today’s Corps. General Coleman has proudly served his country for over 30 years and hails from the Philadelphia area. A special thank you to “The Commandant’s Own,” the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and the United States Marine Color Guard. Their special performances ended the official program but not the evening, as many couples were seen kicking up their heels well after the bells tolled midnight! page 3 The beginning of… The Second Lieutenant Terrence C. Graves USMC Memorial Scholarship In one year, the Foundation’s big-hearted volunteers run over two dozen golf tournaments and scholarship balls nationwide to raise funds for scholarships for the children of Marines. In one day, Pirate’s Cove owner and Second Lieutenant former Marine captain Brad Graft Terrence C. Graves USMC successfully ran 34 miniature golf tournaments at each of his sites across the country to honor veterans from all military branches. This was the first ever organization-wide charity event held at his Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf courses, and the event could not have been held during a more appropriate time of remembrance – Memorial Day weekend. A percentage of admission sales proceeds went directly to military-related charities, including MCSF’s Second Lieutenant Terrence C. Graves USMC Memorial Scholarship. Brad created this scholarship in the name of a Medal of Honor recipient and Vietnam-era Marine. Scholarships totaling $5,000 will be awarded annually, in perpetuity. Aware of the increasing toll that the ongoing war has taken on our men and women who are risking their lives for us every day, Brad wanted to set up a scholarship with a charitable organization that was both efficient and cost-effective in serving our Marines and their families – especially charities that help the families of severely injured and deceased Marines. exactly what a deceased serviceman would want – to have his/her children receive a quality education,” he says. Very respectfully, Brad states, “I am very proud to honor such a fine man and excellent family.” During his military service, Brad found that being in the positive shadow of Terrence Graves was the perfect way to socialize young Marines like himself into the selfless ways required in the Naval Service. In Brad’s past conversations with the parents of Terry Graves, Leslie, 85 and Marjorie, 82, as well as Terry’s brother, Eric Graves, they all thought that the scholarship was “simply a wonderful thing.” Terry’s parents and siblings remain forever proud of him. The entire family often visits Miami University in Ohio where both Terry and Brad graduated, and many of their grandchildren have attended; Graves Hall, a barracks at The Basic School, Marine Corps Base, Quantico; and also the “Graves Memorial,” a beautiful monument located near Terry’s hometown in Groton, New York. Thank you, MCSF! Thank you all so much for working hard to make scholarships available to students because without people like you, it would not happen. He found us – the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Brad was most pleased with the fact that we exist to honor Marines by educating their children, and especially the fact that we offer guaranteed “Heroes Tribute Scholarships” to children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen whose parent was killed in the Global War on Terror. “I believe this is page 4 8 Thank you sincerely, Constance L. Beach Scholarship Recipient SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT SCHOLARSHIPS Like Father, Like Son Corporal Michael Brunelle, Sr. served in the United States Marines Corps from 1978 to 1981. He was stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC and Okinawa, Japan where he served as an amphibious assault gunner. Corporal Brunelle’s son, a present recipient of a Marine Corps Scholarship and a former Marine, followed his father’s footsteps into the Corps. “Since I was young, I have always wanted to serve my country. My father was a great influence on my joining the Marine Corps. He would always tell me Sergeant Michael Brunelle, Jr. and great stories about his experiences in the Corporal Michael Brunelle, Sr. Marines, which inspired me to be part of the proud heritage of the Corps. My father is my role model, a man of great character and integrity. We now share a father/son relationship encompassed with a special Marine bond we will have forever.” Michael Brunelle, Jr. enlisted in the Marines on September 24, 2001 and, by the age of 21, only 28 months after joining the Marines, he was promoted to sergeant. His Marine awards include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Sergeant Brunelle also participated in community relations activities, including Color Guard details, funerals, and Toys for Tots. Currently, Michael is enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Boston and is the recipient of the East Region Lexus Scholarship. He will be graduating this spring with honors with a degree in Management and concentration in Finance. In addition to his studies, Michael has been selected to intern at State Street Corporation as part of a Scholars Program, a program for students who have great academic records and accomplishments. He is also a part of the Golden Key International Honor Society, as well as a volunteer at the New England Veteran’s Homeless Shelter in Boston. “While in college, I have the opportunity to leverage everything I learned in the Marine Corps. I have the chance to demonstrate true leadership and dedication to my peers, and the chance to be a great role model for the students around me. Knowing I am a leader and my peers look up to me makes me feel very proud and accomplished. I go to college every day with the goal to improve myself, help others, and lead the way through the day,” Michael wrote in his scholarship application essay. We say to Michael Jr. and Michael Sr., Semper Fidelis! Our Commitment to the Global War on Terror Casualties As of March 31, 2007, we have lost 938 Marines and 22 Corpsmen serving with the Marines. Within those numbers, 194 Marines leave 321 children behind, and 10 Corpsmen leave 19 children behind. We are committed to providing Heroes Tribute Scholarships of up to $20,000 over four years to all of these children of our fallen heroes in the Global War on Terror. page 5 9 Down Memory Lane: Looking Back at the First Leatherneck Ball Please help us identify these guests at our first Leatherneck Scholarship Ball, which was held December 7, 1962, at the Americana Hotel in New York City. Welcome Home – Board Member Returns from Iraq This April, MCSF board member Major Owen West USMCR returned home from Iraq. After putting everything on the line to protect our way of life, he was kind enough to share his thoughts and experiences, and to remind us all what it means to be a Marine. “My first stint in the Marine infantry ended in 1996. Five years later, my wife Susanne and I watched the towers fall just a half mile away from us. I knew I’d be going back into the Corps. She gave me permission that day. Our first son was born when I was in Iraq in 2003, and we both thought that our combined military service was over. But three years later the computer screens on the sideline were tough to stomach, and I wrangled permission from Susanne to go back to Iraq as a combat replacement. I was sent to an Iraqi outpost east of Ramadi where I was an advisor to an Iraqi battalion. The unit had suffered some casualties, but page 6 one of the things that helped me fit in was this declaration: that our deceased Marines’ children would get scholarships from MCSF. It was just one MCSF board member Owen West returned home from Iraq this April. example that the country had not forgotten these men. I just hope the country doesn’t forget the Iraqis. My tour seemed short, but for Susanne it seemed far too long. Between us, I suppose we did our part. Now I’ll do what I can in a coat and tie instead of body armor, and the MCSF is my outlet. I’m very proud to be involved. And of course I’m especially happy to contribute while remaining in the Marine Corps family.” Thank you, Owen. And welcome home.
