Your attendance and participation in alumni functions is encouraged. Anyone wishing to attend a Board of Directors Meeting is welcome. Contact Bernie or any board member for date and time if you are interested. Class Reunions Reunions typically take place every five years following graduation. Every class is responsible to plan their specific reunion activities. It is nice to have your class attend Homecoming as a group as well. Classes due for a reunion are listed in this newsletter. If you need addresses for your classmates please contact Gloria or Bernie. 2 Gifts Many years ago the reunion classes established the practice of giving a gift to the association at the time of each of their class reunions, every five years. For many years it was china or silver. Because we no longer have a formal tea, all the china and silver have been sold and engraved pieces were donated to the School of Nursing. Since there is no need for these items, monetary gifts are still appropriate and much appreciated. Such gifts along with fundraising funds allow the association to provide scholarships, as well as the Temporary Practice Permits to students and ne graduates. Any class gift may be designated for a specific purpose, i.e.- scholarship. If no specific designation is provided, money is deposited into the general fund and used for the purposes noted as well as expenses of the association. President’s Report Continuing Future Homecoming & Celebration of Nurses Dates Scholarships Scholarships will no longer be given to undergraduates at Homecoming. Because the school year has changed from 24 to 20 months, the timing of providing scholarships has changed. A Promotion Ceremony will occur at the half way mark of the school term, which has been determined to be a more appropriate time to present scholarships as well. Therefore scholarships will be presented to successful applicants at this ceremony. In 2011 the scholarships will be presented on September 16. Future presentations will occur at 10 month intervals, based on the entry date of students. The most important thing I learned at St. Luke’s is a passion for clinical nursing. That passion caused me to attend The George Washington University to become a nurse anesthetist in 1981. Nurse anesthesia is really the most intense clinical nursing. The person receiving the anesthetic is completely reliant upon the CRNA to monitor their well being constantly and make adjustments to maintain a safe anesthetic. I went on to earn my Masters degree from St. Thomas University (in St. Paul, Minnesota) when this became a requirement for entry into practice as a CRNA. I began service to America’s veterans as Chief Nurse Anesthetist at the Minneapolis VA in September of 2001, five days before the attack on the World Trade Center Twin Towers. It is humbling to be able to support our veterans through these two wars by insuring that they have the very best of care at the Minneapolis VA. Eventually I became restless for more knowledge that would help me improve our service to the veterans. I had heard rumors of a clinical doctorate, this Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. I investigated a little and this was what spoke to me: a degree that would help me in my everyday clinical role and my leadership role within the Veterans Administration. I graduated from Rush University in 2005 with my Doctor of Nursing degree. There were 44 graduates across the country that year. Since that time many schools of nursing have developed DNP programs. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s April 2011 fact sheet, 1282 nurses completed their DNP degree in 2010. In 2006, the University of Minnesota hired me to assist with the launching of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program. Our first Masters to DNP class graduated in 2007. I was invited to be the commencement speaker. What an honor. About that time, a colleague and I noticed the lack of textbooks to help schools of nursing develop their DNP programs. We successfully wrote a textbook, The Doctor of Nursing Practice Essentials, A New Model for Advanced Practice Nursing, published by Jones and Bartlett in 2010. It has sold very well. We just got the contract for the second edition. My co-author and I have spoken across the country about our innovative model for the DNP project that was first described in our book. Last year I was appointed by the University of Minnesota as the Program Director for the Nurse Anesthesia specialty in the School of Nursing. We will graduate the first class of BSN-DNP nurse anesthetists next August. I have administered anesthesia in a wide variety of settings: tertiary medical centers, outpatient facilities, office settings, Level 1 trauma hospitals, obstetric units, burn hospitals and in the austere setting of a missions practice in Tanzania. I enjoy them all. The passion I gained for clinical nursing at St. Luke’s so long ago still carries my career forward. It is the underpinning of my passion for nurse anesthesia and the reason why I feel so strongly about the Doctor of Nursing Practice as an entry level degree for advanced practice nurses. It is the celebration of clinical scholarship that is so important for nurses. All nurses will benefit from the elevation of the scholarship of clinical. I am continually grateful for what I learned so long ago at St. Luke’s. By-Laws Review The by-laws of the Association require that they be reviewed every two years. Board members appointed for the review in 2010 are: Ann Bockius Andres (Chairperson), Sandra Epp Kimmel, Sandra Tirpak Davidyock, Wendy Dennison Magocs and Bernice La Bar Kucsan. The team met on June 6th. The following changes and additions are recommended by the team: Change Vision and Mission Statements to read as follows: Vision: 1. To unite St. Luke’s school of Nursing graduates in the common goal of education and dedication to the healing arts profession. 2. To encourage active participation of association members. Mission: 1. To uphold the traditions, standards and progress of nursing as a profession. 2. To maintain a professional society which promotes mutual collegiality and communication among graduates of the School of Nursing. 3. To provide financial assistance to eligible students of St. Luke’s School of Nursing. Add the following statement to Article II – Nominations and Elections, Section 1. “The Nominating Team Chairperson will present the nominations at the annual meeting.” Add to Article IV – Duties of the board of Directors, Section 6 A – (Teams appointed by the president) “Nominating:Team is responsible to obtain names for Board of Directors and Officers for presentation at the annual meeting”. Add the following Statement: Incorporation: The association is the owner and is responsible for the maintenance and insurance of items, artifacts and memorabilia entrusted to its care. Add the following new Section Article XI – Dissolution of the Alumni Association: In the event of dissolution of the Alumni Association, the Board of Directors shall be responsible for the disbursement of any remaining monies or property. Please note that the Vision & Mission Statements were outdated and needed to be brought up to today’s processes. Other minor changes were important to allow for teams to function appropriately. The addition of the section addressing dissolution is the most important change to the by-laws. There is no plan or even a suggestion that the association will dissolve. Addressing this issue is standard for most organizations and it needed to be addressed for us in the unlikely event that such action may be necessary in the future. The suggested revisions will be voted on by members present at Homecoming on October 15, 2011. If you have questions, comments or suggestions please come to the meeting prepared to discuss them. 7 Hotels in Bethlehem Area In the event you will be coming to a class reunion and Homecoming this year, the following are a few of the hotels/motels in the Bethlehem area: Historic Hotel Bethlehem 437 Main St • Bethlehem, PA 18018 610-625-5000 Comfort Suites University 120 W.
