and Birds)
(3 min) LOOK!
a) Look closely at the painting. Pretend this is the last time you will ever see it. Ask
yourself what you see. Think about light, composition, vanishing point, linear
perspective, chiascuro, sfumato, color, size, shape, and anything else you think you can
see going on in the painting. DON’T WRITE anything down yet.
2)
(5 min) WRITE!
a) In the space below, write down everything you see and are thinking about, or sketch the
painting. Fill the box however you choose, but fill it up! Don’t stop writing/sketching for
5 minutes.

(5 min) SHARE OBSERVATIONS
a) In your small groups, go around in a circle. Everyone should share at least 1 observation
they had about the painting. These should only be the things you SEE (not the things you
INFER). Keep going until the full 5 minutes is done. If it is done early, keep looking
silently at the painting. [EX: “I see a hat on the man’s head”]
4)
(5 min) SHARE INFERENCES
a) In your small group, go around in a circle. Everyone should mention an observation
made by someone else, and share an INFERENCE (assumption) about what that person
observed. [EX: “Tatiana saw a hat on the man’s head, and I infer that this means he is a
rich and important dude”]
5)
(5 min) TAKE NOTES
a) Using what your group discussed, take notes using the two columns below. Make sure to
make your notes clear, and make sure that your observations and inferences are filled in
correctly.
b) Think about our essential questions:
i) How does location affect who I am?
ii) Who thrives in times of chaos?
iii) What motivates us to reach our destinies?
Take notes here!
In the painting, I see…
Because of what I see, I infer…
EX: Man is wearing a hat with a feather
EX: This might mean he is important
