W
Welcome
e hope you enjoy the 2008-2009 Wholesale Catalog for Shreckhise Nurseries. We are proud to offer 100 different species with
over 200 named cultivars this year. Note our new items in the listing on the Inside Back Cover. Our trees and shrubs are exceptionally
healthy, grown to our specifications in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia near the town of Grottoes. We are certain that as you
walk through our catalog you will be able to fulfill many of your clients’ needs from our stock. Our staff and crews work diligently year
round to ensure that you are getting the highest quality plant material possible.
The Shreckhise family’s roots in the nursery industry date back to the late 1800’s, when Noah Shreckhise (pictured on the cover),
founded Augusta Nurseries. The nursery was located on the family farm in Augusta County, Virginia near the community of Mt.
Sidney. In 1935, three of his nephews, George, Charles and John Shreckhise, formed a partnership called Shreckhise Brothers. They
undertook numerous business ventures including nursery and landscaping. Plants were grown on the same farm as Uncle Noah had used.
Landscaping was done in Augusta and Rockingham counties with an occasional job as far away as Washington, D.C.
In 1961, the nursery was moved to its current location in Rockingham County. As production increased, the nursery began to
wholesale material to local garden centers and landscape contractors, and wholesaling became a major part of the business by the early
1970’s.
In 1977, the next generation, including Danny and Jerry Shreckhise, bought the business. Shortly thereafter, landscaping was
dropped and nursery production became the primary focus. The first basket grown trees were started in 1980. At present, 90% of our
total production is in containers. We are now entering a fourth generation in the industry. We are grateful for the past and look forward
to a bright future for our company.
Shreckhise Nurseries is located in the midwestern portion of Virginia between the Blue
Ridge and Allegheny Mountains near the center of
the Shenandoah Valley. The cities of Waynesboro,
Staunton and Harrisonburg are within a twentymile radius. Two major highways, Interstates 81
and 64, intersect at Staunton, twenty miles south
of us. The Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport is
only five miles west of our nursery. We invite you to
visit us at any time. Please call us at 800-628-5871
before your trip in order that we can be sure to have
someone available to show you our operation.
