It increasingly benefits from virtual environments and occurs through platforms driven by crowds of developers and problem solvers. In some of the economy's most dynamic sectors, such as smartphone apps, video games, and media content, company performance already relies on individuals outside the organization to become sources of ideas, tasks, and procedures. In their attempts to access and leverage innovation it is now common for companies to employ more open forms of innovation, and to orchestrate innovative communities. These open approaches have created a wealth of opportunities. However, it is crucial to understand how companies access and leverage these distributed sources of innovation. From this viewpoint, the course develops the conceptual foundations, frameworks and methods of innovation processes and then focuses on relationships between communities and firms. The focus is on how to empower innovation, how to exploit digital environments to that purpose, access and leverage innovation communities, manage and strategize in this context, how to foster communities and create related fitting business models.
