11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. General Session: The American
Health Care Paradox
Lauren Taylor, MPH
Why isn’t the United States the
healthiest country on Earth? Although
we spend the most per capita on medical treatment
and supplies, our citizens are sicker and die younger
than those of Western Europe or Scandinavia. Those
outcomes might cause us to look at how we deliver
healthcare, however the problem may instead be
our narrow definition of health. That’s what Lauren
discovered in a lengthy analysis of what countries
spend to stay healthy. She is a presidential scholar of
public health and medical ethics at Harvard Divinity
School and former program manager at the Yale
Global Health Leadership Institute. Her book The
American Health Care Paradox: Why Spending More
Is Getting Us Less has become required reading at
top-tier medical and public health schools across
the country.

General Session: Challenges are
Inevitable, Defeat is Optional!
Roger Crawford
Before Roger inspired others as a
bestselling author and Hall of Fame
athlete, he achieved phenomenal success on center
court - despite a physical challenge. Although born
with ectrodactylism, a rare birth defect, Roger not
only became the only athlete with four impaired
limbs to compete in a NCAA Division I sport, he
also became a Hall of Fame Division I athlete.
His compelling story of how he became a tennis
champion communicates and demonstrates the
power of an “I Can!” attitude to redefine the possible!
Sports Illustrated has recognized Roger as “one of the
most accomplished physically challenged athletes
in the world.” His remarkable life story is a powerful
example that “Challenges are inevitable, defeat is
optional!”
