Summer Reading Requirements 2015
7th Grade
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to 7th grade Reading. Over the summer, each
incoming seventh grader at Mount Aviat will read Jerry Spinelli’s novel
Crash about a football player who learns some important lessons about
friendship during his seventh grade year. We will be taking a test on this
book during the first week of school. Students do not have to complete a
book report on Crash.
In addition to Crash, students will complete a book report on a book
from the attached reading list and turn it in on the first day of school. To
complete your book report, please follow the attached format carefully.
Please take your time and find a book that you will enjoy and that is on your
reading level. The list is updated every year with students’ own suggestions.
For your information, the list can also be found on the school’s website at
www.mountaviat.org under the “Parents” heading.
If you have any questions, please contact me at
gfritz@mountaviat.org. I hope you have a happy and enjoyable summer,
and I look forward to seeing you and discussing your books with you in the
fall. Happy reading!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fritz

SUMMER BOOK REPORT CRITERIA 2015
Grades 7- 8
The seventh and eighth graders will be writing four book reports this year –
one during the summer and three more during the course of the school year.
Students should choose books that interest them, that are on their level, and
that they have not read before. There will always be a written report in
addition to an artistic component.
DUE: First day of ’15-‘16
MANUSCRIPT FORM OF REPORT: typed, double-spaced, standard
font, standard MAA heading
EVALUATION: Your summary and review paragraphs will be graded on
the conciseness and accuracy of your summary, the specific support you
provide in your recommendation, and your accuracy in editing. Your artistic
expression will be graded mainly on effort.
BODY OF REPORT: Your report will consist of TWO well-developed
paragraphs.
A. PLOT SUMMARY: Summarize the plot of your book in one well-written
paragraph. The paragraph should be no longer than ¾ of a typed page. It should include
the highlights of your novel’s plot and the novel’s ending. If there are subplots, you may
mention them briefly but do not go into detail. Make sure to include the novel’s title
(underlined, please) and author in the first sentence.
B. EVALUATION/RECOMMENDATION: In a well-developed paragraph,
explain what you liked about your book. Use specific examples to show what you liked,
and include at least one quotation from your book to support your opinion. You may also
discuss anything you didn’t like about the book. Finally, give your formal
recommendation. For what audience would you recommend the book?
ARTISTIC COMPONENT: Each book report this year will give you a
chance to express yourself artistically. For your summer report, create an
artistic cover for your book report. This should be on unlined paper and
should include the title and author of your book as well as your name, grade,
and date. Artwork can be hand-drawn or computer-generated.
