Perrotti produced the best Big Ten season of any Scarlet Knight by going 8-1. His only loss came to top-seeded
Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin) on Feb. 5. With a 6-1 record against the rest of the field, Perrotti has yet to wrestle
No. 2 Bo Jordan (Ohio State) and No. 3 Steven Rodrigues (Illinois) in his career.
Smith recorded an 8-3 campaign against the Big Ten field in 2015-16, with two of those losses coming by
two-point margins against Iowa’s No. 3 Sam Stoll. The redshirt senior is three wins away from reaching 100
for his career.
Ashnault and Perrotti were the only top-eight finishers for RU last season at fifth and seventh, respectively.
Lewis makes his B1G debut, while Smith hopes to better his ninth-place finish from last season with seven
heavyweight bids up for grabs.

Hall of Fame and Museum against Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 8 at the Rutgers
Athletic Center. Representing Rutgers among the honorees was the program’s
best NCAA Championships finisher in Mike Leta and former longtime head coach,
John Sacchi.
The same nine Scarlet Knights were recognized in the RPI standings. McCabe
was ranked No. 27, Giraldo No. 19, Ashnault No. 3, Dippery No. 27, Lewis No. 6,
Perrotti No. 6, Bakuckas No. 24, Gravina No. 13, and Smith No. 6.
WILKES UNIVERSITY OPEN
• Redshirt sophomore Josh Patrick captured the 125-pound title at the 83rd Annual
Wilkes University Open on Dec. 28 at the Marts Center. The open championship
was the first of Patrick’s career.
The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to
determine the qualifiers for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
This year’s event is March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. For
more information and to purchase tickets for the championship, visit NCAA.com/
Wrestling.
Freshmen Peter Lipari and Luis Gonzalez posted top-three finishes at their
respective weights, as well. Lipari ended his tournament as the runner-up at
133 pounds, while Gonzalez wrestled back for third place at 125 pounds. Rookie
William Povalac took fourth at 149 pounds.
LIGHTS OUT
• RU secured wins in all 10 weight classes to blank Michigan State, 34-0. The dual
shutout was the first for the program against a Big Ten opponent and first in
conference competition since Jan. 7, 2011, when the squad topped Brown, 42-0.
RAUCOUS RAC
• By the time the clock ticked to zero, Nicholas Gravina admitted he wasn’t sure who
had won the 184-pound bout. He was quickly informed by the 2,652 fans cheering on
their feet at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
ESTABLISHING A WINNING TRADITION
• In his nine years “On the Banks,” head coach Scott Goodale has elevated the
program to new heights. The Scarlet Knights have posted a winning dual record
in 10 consecutive seasons, including all nine under the leadership of Goodale.
The program had back-to-back All-Americans in two-straight years, the first time
in program history that was accomplished. The two All-Americans in an eight-year
span is the most since Rutgers had four reach the podium from 1952-1960.
Gravina got his hand raised with an upset win over No. 4 T.J. Dudley, two other
Scarlet Knights secured upsets, and No. 11 Rutgers wrestling beat No. 4 Nebraska
by criteria, 17-16, on Dec. 12 for its first Big Ten and second top-10 win of the season.
MOVING ON UP
• Rutgers achieved its highest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll ranking ever earlier
this season at No. 6 in the nation. RU has defeated six top-25 opponents and
topped two top-10 opponents in 2015-16. The Scarlet Knights’ (15-5, 5-4 Big Ten)
previous high in the polls was No. 7 on Feb. 8, 2011, when the program was 20-1
in dual competition.
Rutgers prevailed, 51-48, in criterion 3.15.3 – total match points scored only from
decisions, major decisions and technical falls – to claim its first Big Ten win in
front of the N.J. faithful.
NITTANY LION OPEN
• Seven Scarlet Knights placed at the 2015 Nittany Lion Open, hosted by Penn
State at Rec Hall. Senior Ken Theobold posted the best result among RU grapplers
with a runner-up finish at 149 pounds. Junior Scott DelVecchio ended his day in
third place at 133 pounds for another RU finish in the top-three.
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
• Redshirt senior Billy Smith recorded the 97th win of his Rutgers career against
Lehigh’s No. 14 Max Wessell on Feb. 20. RU’s active wins leader, Smith is 17th (9735) on RU’s all-time win list.
Freshman Luis Gonzalez impressed in his collegiate debut wrestling unattached,
going 6-2 for fourth place. Redshirt junior Anthony Pafumi took fifth at 174 pounds,
Jordan Pagano finished sixth at 165 pounds, Josh Patrick ended in seventh at 125
pounds, and Nicholas Ottaviano finished eighth at 141 pounds.
Smith, just the third RU heavyweight to qualify for three NCAA Championships, is
three wins shy of becoming the 16th wrestler in history to reach 100 wins.
IN GOOD COMPANY
• If Billy Smith qualifies for the NCAA Championships this season as a senior, he
would become the just fourth four-time qualifier in program history, joining Scott
Winston (2013, 2012, 2011, 2009), Dan Rinaldi (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010), and Andy
Roy (2005, 2004, 2003, 2002). Rinaldi is No. 6 all-time in wins (109-38), Winston is
tied for No. 7 all-time in wins (106-34), and Roy is No. 13 all-time in wins (102-27).
EIWA FLASHBACK
• Rutgers took six of 10 bouts from former EIWA rival No. 7 Cornell for a 21-13 win
to close the 2015 “Grapple at the Garden.” The win was RU’s first over Cornell
since Jan. 31, 1998.
RU AT GRAPPLE AT THE GARDEN
• The Scarlet Knights have competed in the “Grapple at the Garden” each year
and are 6-2 all-time in the event. RU has swept the competition in consecutive
seasons, beating No. 7 Cornell (21-13) and George Mason (47-0) this season and
Army (24-13) and Davidson (46-3) last season.
MIDLANDS CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP
• Rutgers concluded the 53rd Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in
third place with 110 team points and a program record seven placewinners, not
including one unattached competitor. Highlighting the tournament for RU were
three fourth-place finishers in 133-pounder Anthony Giraldo, 141-pounder Anthony
Ashnault, and 157-pounder Richie Lewis.
The Scarlet Knights dropped a heartbreaker, 18-16, against Maryland before
bouncing back with a 29-10 win against George Mason in 2013. In its first trip
to the “Grapple” in 2012, Rutgers lost to No. 14 Nebraska, 22-10, and dominated
Chattanooga, 28-12.
Four others placed for the Scarlet Knights: Phillip Bakuckas in fifth at 174 pounds,
Billy Smith in fifth at heavyweight, Hayden Hrymack in sixth at 197 pounds, and
Nicholas Gravina in eighth at 184 pounds.
The seven RU placewinners at Midlands shattered the previous record of four

RETURNING TO THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
• The Scarlet Knights were ranked No. 18 in the country in the first 2015-16 USA
Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Scarlet Knights were one of nine Big Ten
schools ranked in the top 25, which led all conferences.
It is Rutgers’ first time opening the season ranked since 2011, when RU earned
the No. 15 spot in the NWCA rankings.
RECORD TICKET SALES
• The Rutgers wrestling program surpassed its total of 860 season tickets from
last season and reached the 1,000-ticket mark for the 2015-16 season.
The Scarlet Knights drew 18,877 fans to the Rutgers Athletic Center and College
Ave. Gym across seven duals in 2014-15 - an average of 2,697 per match - to finish
sixth in the country in attendance. Five of the top-six programs in attendance
hailed from the Big Ten.
RU SWEEPS THE RUTGERS DUALS

against Centenary, 46-0, Franklin & Marshall, 47-0, and Binghamton, 38-0, Sunday
at the College Ave. Gym.
The Scarlet Knights (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) won all 30 matches on the day, with 19
coming in bonus-point fashion. RU began the season with three consecutive
shutouts for the third time in the Goodale era, joining the 2009-10 and 2010-11
teams.
ON THE WORLD STAGE
• Anthony Ashnault posted a 4-1 record and finished third at 66 KG at the
2015 USA UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials on June 12 in Madison, Wisc.
Ashnault, who earned a spot on the USA University World Team last summer,
defeated Freddy Stroker (Minnesota Storm) by decision, 7-6, to earn the thirdplace designation. Anthony Giraldo also competed for Rutgers at 60 KG, finishing
the tournament with a 1-2 record.
UNIVERSITY NATIONALS
• Anthony Perrotti went 7-2 and finished eighth at 80 KG at the 2015 ASICS UWW
Cadet and University Nationals on June 1 in Akron, Ohio.
COMING HOME
• Entering its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference in 2014-15, the Rutgers
wrestling program made a big addition to its coaching staff, hiring longtime
Big Ten coach and former grappler Donny Pritzlaff to its staff as associate head
coach. A decorated collegiate and freestyle wrestler, Pritzlaff owns more than 10
years of collegiate coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.
The Lyndhurst, New Jersey, native spent the last three seasons at the University
of Michigan (2011-13) as an assistant wrestling coach after spending five years
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the associate head wrestling coach.
As a collegiate wrestler at Wisconsin (1998-2001), Pritzlaff compiled one of the
most impressive careers in the program’s history. Pritzlaff was a two-time NCAA
165-pound champion (2000, 2001) and four-time NCAA All-American, placing fifth
as a junior at 165 pounds in 1999 and sixth as a freshman at 150 pounds in 1998.
BEST FOOT FORWARD
• RU won its first dual of the 2015-16 season, 47-0, over Centenary. That makes it
eight consecutive years that the Scarlet Knights have recorded a victory in their
first dual of the season.
RETURNING NCAA QUALIFIERS
• Redshirt senior Billy Smith, senior Ken Theobold, 2014 All-American Anthony
Perrotti, junior Scott DelVecchio, and 2015 All-American Anthony Ashnault return
as RU’s five NCAA qualifiers from last season.
JERSEY STRONG
• More than 80 percent (23 of 28) of RU’s roster hails from the “Garden State.”
2015 NCAA RECAP
• For the second consecutive season, Rutgers wrestling boasted an All-American.
141-pound redshirt freshman Anthony Ashnault stood atop the podium on March
21 at the Scottrade Center as the eighth-place finisher at the 2015 NCAA Division
I Wrestling Championships. It is the first time in program history that Rutgers
had an All-American in consecutive years, as Ashnault became the 10th wrestling
All-American in school history.
Also qualifying for NCAAs was Billy Smith (HWT), Anthony Perrotti (157), Ken
Theobold (149), and Scott DelVecchio (133).

Head Coach Scott Goodale
Scott Goodale enters his ninth season as the Rutgers head wrestling coach. During his tenure, Goodale has brought the Scarlet Knights into the forefront
of collegiate wrestling, leading the program to four top-25 and one top-10 finish since 2009.
Under Goodale’s watch, RU has produced two All-Americans, one conference champion, 41 NCAA Championship bids, two Big Ten Conference Championships
placewinners and 42 placewinners at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships. The program has tallied an impressive
125-45-1 record during his first eight years “On the Banks.”
Rutgers has produced All-Americans in each of the last two seasons, with Anthony Ashnault (141 pounds) becoming the first freshman to accomplish the
feat in program history last year in St. Louis. Rutgers achieved its first All-American since 2002 in 2014, as 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti finished eighth at NCAAs.
Rutgers’ national prominence soared to new heights in 2014-15, when the Scarlet Knights tallied a new single-season attendance mark and posted the sixth-best attendance total (18,877)
and average (2,697) in the nation, according to a report released Roby Publishing.
RU ended its inaugural Big Ten Conference campaign No. 21 in the nation in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll after a 14-7 campaign that featured a pair of ranked wins and five
NCAA Championships selections.
Goodale had his first grappler breakthrough on the national scene in 2013-14, as 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti became the program’s first All-American wrestler since 2002 by placing
eighth at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City. Perrotti made NCAA Championships history on his consolation run, recording the second-fastest win by fall all-time
at the national tournament with a 10-second pin over Oregon State’s Roger Pena.
After dropping his first match of the tournament, Perrotti rattled off four consecutive victories, including three in a row against top-15 opponents.
In RU’s (11-5, 7-2) final season in the EIWA before joining the Big Ten Conference, the squad finished third with 91 points at the 2014 EIWA Championships in Philadelphia. Three Scarlet
Knights received automatic bids to nationals, while an additional at-large selection gave Goodale at least four NCAA qualifiers in five of his first seven seasons “On the Banks.”
The Jackson, N.J., native took over the Rutgers program following an impressive seven-year stint as head coach at his alma mater, Jackson Memorial High School. In seven seasons, Goodale
compiled an overall record of 155-16, leading his squad to the top ranking in the state in 2006 and 2007.
The legendary Jersey high school wrestling coach was inducted into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame on Nov. 7, 2009.
Goodale was named the New Jersey State Coach of the Year three times, while also earning District 21 and Region VI Coach of the Year accolades three times during his tenure with the Jaguars. Goodale coached four New Jersey State Champions and five New Jersey State runner-ups, along with 16 additional state placewinners. In total, he has coached a total of 41 District
21 Champions and 10 Region VI Champions. Goodale led his teams to two Group IV State Championships, as well as four Central Jersey Group IV Sectional titles. Each season Goodale spent
with Jackson Memorial, the Jaguars were crowned District 21 Team Champions, as well as winning four Class A-South Shore Conference titles. During the 2005-06 season, the Jaguars
finished ranked No. 10 in the country. The following year, Goodale and the Jaguars improved that performance, finishing the year ranked seventh nationally. In every year Goodale was at
Jackson Memorial, he led his team to a top-10 finish in the New Jersey wrestling polls.
Prior to being named head coach at Jackson Memorial, Goodale served as a top assistant for the wrestling program, while also working as the offensive coordinator for the football team.
During his time with the Jaguars football squad, he was a part of three state championship teams.
Goodale wrestled for Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, earning his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 1995. He then went to New Jersey City University where he
earned a certification in Special Education in 1997. As a collegiate wrestler, Goodale made three trips to the NCAA Championships, as well as placing second at the Eastern Wrestling
League (EWL) Tournament twice in his career. During his time with the Bald Eagles, the team was ranked as high as ninth in the country. Goodale finished with 99 wins at Lock Haven.
Goodale and his wife Lisa are the parents of Shelby and Zachary, and reside in Toms River.

COACHING STAFF
Associate Head Coach Donny Pritzlaff
Associate head coach Donny Pritzlaff, a two-time national champion and Big Ten Conference veteran as a coach and wrestler, enters his second season with
Rutgers in 2015-16.
Pritzlaff arrived at RU for its inaugural season in the Big Ten, helping the program achieve its second consecutive All-American in redshirt freshman Anthony
Ashnault (141 pounds) and a No. 21 USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll ranking to end the 2014-15 season.
A decorated collegiate and freestyle wrestler, Pritzlaff owns more than 10 years of collegiate coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.
Prior to Rutgers, the Lyndhurst, N.J., native spent three seasons at the University of Michigan (2011-13) as an assistant wrestling coach after spending five years at the University of WisconsinMadison as the associate head wrestling coach.
Pritzlaff mentored four Wolverine All-Americans in his time in Ann Arbor, Mich., working closely with Kellen Russell, who captured his second NCAA title and fourth Big Ten title to finish a stellar
collegiate career in 2012. Russell became just the 11th four-time Big Ten Champion in league history.
Prior to arriving at Michigan, Pritzlaff served five seasons as an assistant coach at Wisconsin (2007-11), including the last two as associate head coach. He helped lead the Badgers to top-10 team
finishes at the NCAA Championships in each of the last three seasons, including a fourth-place finish in 2010.
Pritzlaff was instrumental in developing the Badger middleweight wrestlers, battle-testing notable performers under his tutelage such as NCAA champion and three-time All-American Andrew
Howe, NCAA finalist Craig Henning and All-Americans Tyler Turner, Zach Tanelli and Kyle Ruschell.
In all, 36 Badgers qualified for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in his tenure, a list that included 15 All-Americans, five Big Ten Champions and 19 Academic All-Big Ten members.
As a collegiate wrestler at Wisconsin (1998-2001), Pritzlaff compiled one of the most impressive careers in the program’s history. Pritzlaff was a two-time NCAA 165-pound champion (2000, 2001)
and four-time NCAA All-American, placing fifth as a junior at 165 pounds in 1999 and sixth as a freshman at 150 pounds in 1998.
He became the 12th NCAA champion in Badger program history with a 4-2 sudden-victory decision over Iowa State’s Joe Heskett in the championship final. The following season, he again used
an overtime takedown to edge Heskett, 3-1, en route to his second-straight NCAA title, becoming Wisconsin’s fourth multiple champion and one of just three four-time All-Americans in program
history.
A 2001 NWCA All-Star selection, Pritzlaff claimed three-straight Big Ten Conference 165-pound titles (1999-2001). He posted a 135-15 career collegiate record, including a 43-1 mark as a senior,
ranking fourth among Wisconsin’s all-time winningest wrestlers. His .894 career winning percentage ranks third in Badger program history. Pritzlaff was inducted into the University of Wisconsin
Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
Pritzlaff’s success continued on the international scene, as the experienced grappler completed a successful eight-year career in the 74 kg/163-pound freestyle division. He captured the bronze
medal at the 2006 World Championships and earned medals at the Pan American Championships (silver, 2006), New York Athletic Club Holiday International Open (gold, 2001; silver, 2005; bronze,
2002, ‘03, ‘04), Henri Deglane Challenge (bronze, 2002), Dave Schultz Memorial International (gold, 2002, ‘05) and Sunkist Kids International Open (gold, 2002; silver, 2004). While in college,
Pritzlaff captured the 1998 Junior World championship at 70 kg.
A native of Lyndhurst, N.J., Pritzlaff graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He and his wife, Robin, have two daughters, Adalena and Onaliese.

national prominence.
Leonardis has helped the Scarlet Knights to a 125-45-1 record during his first eight years at RU. Leonardis made an immediate impact on the recruiting trail,
as their first recruiting class was ranked nationally by W.I.N. Magazine (No. 3) and Intermat (No. 4).
During Leonardis’ tenure, RU has produced two All-Americans, one conference champion, 41 NCAA Championship bids, two Big Ten Conference Championship
placewinners, and 42 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships placewinners.
The program has produced All-Americans in each of the last two seasons, with Anthony Ashnault (141 pounds) becoming the first freshman to accomplish
the feat in program history last year in St. Louis. Rutgers achieved its first All-American since 2002 in 2014, as 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti finished eighth at NCAAs.
Consistent success has been attained with Leonardis on staff, as RU notched four top-25 and one top-10 finish since 2009.
Leonardis was a three year varsity wrestling letterwinner at Lehigh before graduating in 1997. He was an EIWA Champion in 1996 in the 190-pound weight class. The Sea Girt, N.J., native
played football and wrestled for Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J. His senior year he was a captain for both wrestling and football, leading each program to a State Championship.
During his wrestling career, Leonardis was a four-time National Prep placewinner and champion and an Amateur Wrestling News All-American. On the coaching front, Leonardis has extensive experience. For six years (2000-06), he compiled a .720 winning percentage as the head coach at Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. Leonardis-coached teams placed in the top-five of

TCNJ, Pollard was named NCAA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007.
Prior to accepting the position at TCNJ, Pollard was a three-year varsity starter at Rider University. While at Rider, Pollard was a two-time Josh Hanson Award winner, given to the wrestler
