CH107-1B Introductory Chemistry II Syllabus Fall 2013 When: Monday Wednesday Friday 9:05 am – 9:55 pm Where CHEM 101 (Chemistry building lecture hall) Instructor: Dr. Mike Jablonsky, jabo@uab.edu Office Hours: MWF 10-11. Materials: General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: Structures of Life, 4th Edition. Room 138, Chemistry Building Course Description: Chemistry 107 is an introduction to organic chemistry and biochemistry, with special attention paid to the chemical processes occurring living systems. Prerequisites: CH105 or CH115. Course Content: Lecture notes, homework assignments, practice exams, quizzes, quiz keys, and other materials will be posted on Blackboard. It is in your best interest to study the material to be covered prior to the lecture, and to be prepared to participate in class. Early Alert: UAB’s Early Alert System (EAS) is in use for this course. The EAS is designed to bring students’ attention to classes in which they may be struggling, and to encourage students to use the resources that UAB provides to allow them to succeed academically. An early alert will be sent to all students with an examination average of less than 70 %. Early alerts will be sent after Exam 1 and Exam 2. It is in your best interest to contact the instructor whenever you are having difficulty with any course material. Class Communication: I will use the UAB e-mail system to communicate to the class. E-mails will be distributed through the UAB distribution list for the course, which sends e-mails to each student’s UAB e-mail address that is listed with the University. Please make sure this address is functioning. Grades may only be discussed in person; please do not request grades via email. Rules: Texting, cell phone use, unnecessary talking, and irrelevant computer use are disruptions to the class, and will not be tolerated (you may use your laptop for note taking). Cheating will result in a zero on the activity in question, will be reported to the Dean of CAS, and may lead to further disciplinary action, including dismissal from the University. Supplemental Instruction (SI): Supplemental Instruction will be available for CH107 this spring. Meeting times and leader information will be given in class. Please follow this link for more info on SI: www.uab.edu/si Disability Support Services: Please contact DSS to obtain the required paperwork. Tutoring: A tutor list is available in the Chemistry office (CHEM201). CH107-1B Introductory Chemistry II Syllabus Fall 2013 Grading: Grades will be based on total points, which will be derived as follows: Four chapterbased exams at 100 pts. each: 400 pts., quizzes: 100 pts., essay: 100 pts., for a total of 600 possible points. See below for the homework policy. The course grading scale is: 90 – 100 % 80 – 90% 70 – 80% 60 – 70% Below 60% 540 – 600 pts. 480 – 539 pts. 420 – 479 pts. 360 – 419 pts. < 360 pts. A B C D F Examinations: Exams will be based on lectures, quizzes, and homework, but may include any topics discussed in class. Examination dates are set in advance, and you are expected to schedule around them. Make-up exams may be taken under the following three circumstances: 1) written notification is given in advance of the examination, 2) documentation (doctor’s excuse, etc.) is provided, and 3) the makeup exam is taken before the next class period after the original exam date. If these three criteria are not met, a zero will be given for the examination. It is in your best interest to keep all exams and quizzes. Examination Dates: Exam I Exam II Exam III Exam IV Wednesday, September 11th, take home, due Friday, September 13th 9:05 am Monday, October 14th Monday, November 11th Final Exam, Wednesday, December 11th, 8:00 am – 10:30 am Homework: Homework will be assigned for each chapter, and will be due at the corresponding exam. For example, homework for Chapters 11, 12, 13 will be due 9:05, Friday, September 13th. Homework not received will result in a 10 pt. penalty on the corresponding exam. Essay: A short, 2-3 page, essay is required. The topic will be your choice, but it must relate to some aspect of organic chemistry or biochemistry (not necessarily covered in class). This essay will require you to search the scientific literature, and reference at least one primary source (Wikipedia, our textbook, and lecture notes are not primary sources, but may be included as references). I must approve your essay topic, via email. The essay will be due at the final exam. I will say more about this essay when we begin the biochemistry section of the course, but be thinking about possible essay topics as we cover different chapters.
