The teens volunteered for the annual Run With the Chiefs 5K. They set up and passed out water along the run route and also helped in the clean-up for the event. Thanks to Captain Clark for taking time to thank the teens for their help! Names (left -right): Kayla Barnes, Hailee Rench, Madison Gehris, Jaquan Tankard, Shawna Fackler, Captain R. E. It wa the Camp Timpoochee, a 4-H camp in Niceville, Florida s pretty co ol.” Diant from Monday, July 28 to Friday, August 1. The teens e Lowe participated in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program with the teens from NAS Whidbey Island and Wizard Tech. They had the opportunity to create Bo Bots, robotic vehicles that they could program on the computer to perform various tasks. This task was especially engaging to the male teens. They really enjoyed building the physical part of the robot and being able to manipulate it by inputting code into the computer, which sparks interest in the engineering field. Additionally, they were able to create remotely-operated underwater vehicles (ROV), using wires, flip-switches and PVC pipes. This provided them the opportunity to solder wires together to create a control switch to move their ROV around. This task in particular, engaged the female teens because they were able to melt wires together. The camp experience was a wonderful opportunity for them to learn by doing hands on activities. These activities were engaging because they had the opportunity to complete their task with limited oral direction and explicit written direction. The minimal interaction creates an atmosphere where they had to be self-reliant. However, they were allowed to inquire if they had a question. The response to their question would end in a manner that would allow them to ponder the problem and determine what they thought was the best solution. The teens were also able to participate in more traditional 4-H programs also. They participated in various excursions that included fishing, kayaking, archery, rocketry, air-rifle and dancing. On Thursday, the entire camp went to the beach at the Eglin Air Force Base. The beach was extremely nice with white sand and clear ocean water. The teens enjoyed just sitting on the beach talking and going in the water. They enjoyed the fact that the water was warm and clear. The water was so clear in fact, that they could see the marine life underwater. They were able to see fish of various sizes swimming in the water. At Camp Timpochee, there was always an evening activity that took place. On one night in particular, they held a talent show. Various campers participated in this activity. When Diante (a NSN teen) got on stage to perform his rap, the entire camp was amazed by his talent. The staff at Camp Timpochee was very impressed by his performance and at the conclusion they gave him an extra long applause. Another evening activity that was held was a bonfire, and particpant were able to roast s’mores on the fire. This was an enjoyable experience for everyone in attendance. Another night, the camp performed a Flag Retirement Ceremony, which was a touching experience. A dance was held on the final night of camp. The teens absolutely loved getting out on the dance floor. They were able to show off their moves they learned in dance class, too. At the conclusion of the dance, everyone went outside and formed a circle, which is a typical closing of camp ceremony, where everyone was able to say good bye to all of their friends. www.discovermwr.com/navalstationnorfolk PAGE 10 NAVAL STATION NORFOLK navy school liaison officer Connecting Navy Families, Commands and K-12 Schools The School Liaison Officer Program provides military members with the support necessary to coordinate and advise military parents of school aged children on educational needs and to assist in solving education-related problems that stem from the military lifestyle. The Run with The Chiefs 5K originated as Chiefs and selectees organizing a run around the base as part of their selectee season. As it grew, MWR took on the event to organize it into a 5K run for anyone to participate. This is a great opportunity for all hands to come out and celebrate our Chiefs to be. The event is a fun run that wraps up with the Guide On Challenge, which is run by the base CMC. This determines the most motivating, driven, and spirited group of selectees present at the event. This year's winning command was Oceana; second place was USS Jason Duncan and third was USS Oak Hill with the USS Enterprise taking home Most Unique. Sponsoring the run were USAA, NFCU, Dave & Buster’s, Tim Hortons, The USO, University of Phoenix, First Command and Buffalo Wild Wings.
