They are also a great resource for the future! o The Bellevue College Student Success and Counseling Center 5. What does it mean to officially withdraw or drop a course? o Officially withdrawing from a course - A “W” will show up on your transcript, but a “W” will not factor into your GPA. Most of the time a “W” is better than earning a failing mark. o When should I consider withdrawing? You are too far behind in your work and have communicated with your instructor. You realize after registration that the class isn’t what you thought it would be. You notice after a few days or weeks that it’s not quite the right level for you. You’re unhappy with the grades you have been receiving in the course. o How do I withdraw from a course? During fall, winter, and spring quarters, you may drop a course through the 10th day without the course becoming a part of your transcript. After the 10th day of the quarter and through the 7th week, the “W” will become part of your permanent transcript record, regardless of grade status at the time. (Note: universities do look at how many “W” grades are on a transcript) No official withdrawal will be permitted after the start of the 8th week of the quarter. Summer Quarter deadlines are different—please review them in the BC Grading Policy o What if something happens after the “W” date passes and I need to withdraw? Don’t panic! When extenuating circumstances occur after the official withdrawal period students can request a Hardship Withdrawal from their instructor (HW.) The faculty member may also initiate the contact. No points are calculated into the GPA for HW. 6. Can I retake courses at BC? o Repeating a Course Students who earn a grade of “D” or “F”, or students who fail to achieve a designated grade as a prerequisite for another course, may repeat a course up to two times. After you retake the course, you will submit a Repeat Class Request to have the highest grade calculated into the BC GPA. This form can be found on My Online Services off of the BC homepage. This request will result in an “R” grade identifier being posted next to the lower grade courses in the permanent transcript.
