use to them," said Frank Israel, Loyola's principal.
The lead presenter for the "iLearn @ Loyola" sessions will be Pam Varnado, the school's technology integrationist.
Interested parents can register for either session by email to iLearn@loyolaprep.org. Deadline for registration is Feb. 6.
Meehan honored by LASC
Loyola’s Student Government Association advisor Camille Meehan was
named to the Student Council Advisors Hall of Fame earlier
this month in New Orleans.
She was recognized by the Louisiana Student Council
State Convention (LASC) and was given her trophy and pin
by Loyola Principal Frank Israel.
“This is a very small group of people who have all given
decades of service to forming student leaders,” Israel said.
“To be appointed to this group is a huge honor for Camille
and for our Student Council. Camille and I first met many years ago through
Student Council. Camille is a familiar face to the annual convention and to the
summer leadership workshop in Natchitoches. Many, many faces have come
and gone over those years. The average tenure for student council advisor is
probably about four or five years; Camille has been LCP Student Council's rock
far longer.”
Your kindness is appreciated ...
Loyola English teacher Betsy Yates was among those on
board the cruise ship Costa Concordia when it collided with
rocks off the Italian coast on Jan. 13.
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
I appreciate, more than I can express, your thoughts,
prayers, emails, and phone calls. Jim, Patsy, Leigh, and I
are fine. It was a birthday I shall never forget. I haven’t
talked to the media because I think the “story” should be
about the wonderful Italian people who live on Isola del
Giglio, work at the Hilton(at the airport), and work at the
American Embassy in Rome, and they (the media) don’t
agree with me.
Again, thank you so much.
-- Betsy Yates
Loyola’s Keri Jankowski (far right) was
one of the winners when she competed in
the Junior Science & Humanities Symposium earlier this month in Baton Rouge
and was awarded fourth place for her
original research titled “Effects of Cytomegalovirus and Hyperglycemia on
Brain Endothelial Cells.”

Flyers face No. 1-ranked
team tonight in Loyola Gym
Every game is a challenge in the district
schedule and the Loyola Flyers are finding
that out.
Coming off a tough loss Tuesday to
Green Oaks, the Flyers will now have to take
on the No. 1-ranked Bossier Bearkats tonight
at 7:30 p.m. in the Flyer gym.
Bossier was the state champion last year
in Class 4A before dropping down into 3A
this year.
“It will be quite a challenge,” boys
coach Willie Jackson said. “They are a solid
team. We will have to play extremely well to
have success, but I believe that if we do, we
will have an opportunity to make it happen.”
The girls will meet Bossier at 6 p.m.
The Flyers are 24-3 overall and are ranked
No. 2 in the state but at No. 1 in unofficial
power rankings.
The boys are trying to rebound from
Tuesday’s tough loss. Down by 13 with less
than four minutes the play, the Flyers battled
back in the opening District 1-3A game of
the year but eventually came up short in a
65-62 loss.
The Giants appeared to be on their way
to an easy win, but 3-pointers by Rodney
Ross and Matthew Finck
fueled the comeback. The
Flyers twice tied the
game in the final minute
and had two shots in the
last 20 seconds that did
not fall which would
have sent the game into
overtime.
It was one of the
most balanced scoring
nights of the year for the
Flyers as Justin Harris,
Ross and Finck each had
11 points and Johnny
Cooksey had 10. Harris
had 11 rebounds and
Finck had eight. The Flyers had a tremendous rebounding advantage of
43-29 but were hurt by

(55 percent).

Flyers pick up
district wins
The pace of the boys and girls soccer
schedules has certainly picked up as the
end of the regular season closes in and both
Flyer teams have been busy this week.
Both picked up easy district wins
Thursday night at Messmer Stadium as part
of the Senior Night celebration.
The boys won 13-0 and the girls won
9-0 over North DeSoto.
Daniel Blewer, Andy Nguyen, Aaron
Hollier and Harrison Caruthers each had
two goals for the Flyers and Daniel Guzman and Nguyen each had two assists as
the Flyers improved to 9-7-2 overall and 5- Daniel Blewer
1 in the district.
The girls are 15-4-2 and 8-0 in the district.
Honored as part of Senior Night for the boys were Steven Griego,
Guzman and Jay Weiss. Honored at halftime of the girls game were
Katherine Wied, Mary Catherine Sarcar, Eleanor Brainis and Megan
Garcia-Shepherd.
Assistance needed for Flyer Relays
The Loyola Track & Field will host the 2nd Annual LCP Flyer
Relays on Friday, March 2nd at Lee Hedges Stadium. The meet begins at 4 p.m. with the field events and the running events will
begin at 4:45 p.m.
There are several ways that parents can get involved and help
the track and field team with this meet.
1. Meet Workers - recording times and putting medals in envelopes are just a couple of the tasks that require no previous experience that can help us run a smooth meet.
2. Hospitality Room donations - Would you be willing to
donate food/drink items that will be available to coaches and officials?
3. Attending the meet and bringing out friends and relatives
to support the Flyer Track & Field Team - Cost is $5 at the gate.
4. Corporate Title Sponsor - for $1,000 your business/organization place the company name in the title of the meet. This will
show everyone that your business is serious about supporting you
people.
5. Buying an advertisement in the Meet Program - 1/2
page ad is $50. A full page ad is $100.
Please contact Coach Byrd at jbyrd@loyolaprep.org or 7735206 if you are interested in supporting the track and field team
with the 2012 LCP Flyer Relays.

Loyola students heard a powerful message about dangers of texting
and driving from Johnny & Jeanne Brown. The Browns’ daughter,
Alex, was killed in a one-car accident on her way to school in November, 2010. The Browns began the Remembering Alex Brown Foundation to tell high school students about the potential consequences
of texting and driving. Included in the presentation was the truck in
which Alex Brown was driving when she was killed.
