Event: Sustainability as a Moral Issue
Presenter: Jeanie Graustein

Creating a sustainable relationship between people and our planet will require more than new
technology and scientific knowledge. Public policy, individual behavior and the way we
understand our relation with the whole community of life also need to change. How
do we incorporate our personal, secular and religious values in the transformative
work of creating a sustainable society?
Jeanie Graustein, M.Ed., M.Div., is Environmental Justice Ministry Coordinator for
the Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry, Archdiocese of Hartford. She engages
congregations in reflecting on the moral nature of issues such as clean air and water, children’s
environmental health, sprawling development in CT, and global climate change. She is a member
of the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science (IRAS), for which she co-chaired the 2004
conference, “Earth’s Waters in Crisis: a Scientific, Spiritual and Moral Challenge.”

Description: Turn in your recyclables at Shop Rite, retrieve the money receipt and then
place it in one of the RA's bags (the RA you would like to see pied in the face). At the end of
the week, the RA with the most "money" in their bag will be pied by the residents in the
Quad! Giveaways for those who turn in the most money receipts! Proceeds from the
receipts will be donated to The Water Project
Fire Science Living Learning Community to Host: From Rags to Riches!

Description: Residents can recycle their old shirts and turn the fabric into art! The goal—
to sew an American flag with the collected fabric!

Description: Visit the Local & Regional Vendor's Market set up in Bartels
Dining Hall with farmers and vendors from New England. Enjoy free samples at lunch and

Piotrowicz from the CT Department of Agriculture.

performance, part poetic dialogue about our earth and how the ways in which we treat it
are critical. We invite the entire UNH community to come out and witness this powerful
poetic performance.

earth-friendly giveaways! Also, we are collecting old semi-formal and prom dresses to
donate to local high schools for prom season. In addition, we are collecting old reading
glasses, electronics, cell phones and printer cartridges!

Event: The Yale Project on Climate Change Presentation: Climate Change in the
American Mind
Presenter: Nicholas Smith, Yale
Date: Wednesday, 4/20

Description: This presentation will provide an outline of American
public engagement with climate change. Results from a range of studies,
using survey methodologies to gather public opinion, will identify how
Americans feel about climate change, what their beliefs and attitudes are,
what knowledge they have about how the climate system works and how
likely they are to support or oppose policies designed to mitigate against
the threat
Nicholas Smith Bio: Since January 2010, I have been a postdoctoral
research associate for the Yale Project on Climate Change
Communication. I am involved with a variety of projects exploring
American public awareness and understanding of climate change. Recent projects have
included investigating the types of imagery and emotions Americans associate with climate
change and how these relate to risk perceptions and policy preferences. I am also more
broadly interested in how risk issues are communicated by the mass media, and in
particular, the role visual information plays in fostering public engagement

interdisciplinary program in sustainability at the University of New Haven. Topics highlight the
relevance of sustainability across academic disciplines and the importance of sustainability issues to
