And no, we aren't just talking about the New Year. Or may be we are talking about the new year. A different kind of new year. From the perspective of EPisodes, it is also a new year – our second year begins with this issue. Exactly one year ago, our first issue saw the light of day. Five issues later, we have to say, it's been a happy journey, and for which we have a few people to thank. Primarily the support and encouragement of the management, and of course, you the reader. But enough of the serious bit. On this the first anniversary of EPisodes, we've decided that celebration means fun. So fun is what we're going to have. This issue, we're going to focus on the anniversary, you the people at E&P and on a trip down memory lane. For starters, we're sprucing up our editorial page itself. After all the hard work put in over the past year, we thought we owe ourselves a bit of fun. Of course, some of our regular features still stay. Work after all, does go on. Before we sign off, we'd like to thank all our well wishers, all those who supported and encouraged us, and especially all those who wrote in and contributed towards making EPisodes what we intended it to be... a forum for everyone at E&P. Rajiv ad hi St Gand raba Hyde ium, d Happy New Year. Work hard and have plenty of fun. As you can see, we’re already practicing what we preach. Editorial Team 01 INSIDE STORY INSIDE STORY In 1994-95, LPS itself was renamed Engineering & Projects Division (EPD). The change in name was more than just cosmetic – signifying, as it did, a change in business portfolio. E&P BU Chronicles Past, Present and Future. Darwin’s theory of evolution, while propounding that only the fittest survive, was based, at the core of its very premise, on the fact that all things evolve. As we pondered on the content for this first anniversary edition of EPisodes, the origin and evolution of our own company seemed to be the perfect lead story. Yet, in keeping with the anniversary theme of celebration, this down-memory-lane piece will also commemorate present and recent numbers, symbolic as they are of our collective effort and success. As we all know, Engineering & Projects Business Unit – or simply E&P BU – is a part of Bajaj Electricals Ltd., which itself a part of the 72-year-old, ` 30000 crore Bajaj Group, ranked amongst India’s largest and most successful conglomerates. 02 It was in the 1960s, that Bajaj Electricals decided to enter the turnkey projects execution space, and hence launched its Contracts Division. Subsequently renamed Lighting Projects Services (LPS), the main scope of its business was providing lighting packages for power plants and other industrial facilities. rupee and period in time, it was a commendable effort. The start was made, and growth followed immediately. In 1994-95, LPS itself was renamed Engineering & Projects Division (EPD). The change in name was more than just cosmetic – signifying, as it did, a change in business portfolio. The emphasis had shifted to design and execution of electrical projects. No more was the company just a ‘provider of light’. Humble beginnings... humble turnover too. A modest ` 2-3 crore. But then the entire division comprised just 6-8 people. Considering per-person-productivity, value of the The Next Today, E&P BU is a buzz of intense activity with a network of offices across the country, and includes over 800 engineers alone. W a v e The next wave of evolution unfolded in 2001, when EPD commissioned its own dedicated galvanising and manufacturing plant – today, a jewel in our crown... the Ranjangaon Unit ranks amongst the top five integrated manufacturing facilities of its kind in the world. Today, E&P BU is a buzz of intense activity with a network of offices across the country, and includes over 800 engineers alone. The company clocked up revenues of over ` 755 crore in FY 2009-10. A driver of the company’s economic fortunes, it contributes a third of Bajaj Electrical’s topline. EPD itself underwent further transformation; rechristened into its present avatar - Engineering & Projects Business Unit (E&P BU), and trifurcated into separate business divisions. A corporate structure as it stands today, E&P BU comprises three divisions – Highmast & Street Lighting, Transmission Line Towers and Special Projects. Indeed, the responsibility on us is great. But as we always have, we will continue to rise to the occasion. Let us delve deeper and discover what makes the three divisions and the Ranjangaon Unit tick. 03 INSIDE STORY Special Projects Division The Special Projects Division has four core areas of competency: Power Plant illumination Power distribution and rural electrification Sports Stadium lighting Special lighting such as monuments, public utilities and sound & light shows. This Division returned a turnover of ` 265 crore in 2008-09, and is targeting ` 335 crore for the current financial year. Over the years, the Division has executed several prestigious projects, and its achievements are worthy of a leader. INSIDE STORY For the last-mentioned project, the special designer bracket has become so popular that it is now called the CIDCO bracket, with municipal corporations across the country opting for the same. The successful completion of this project has given a major boost to the street lighting business of E&P BU, necessitating the consideration of a separate group to focus purely on this business. • Market leader in Thermal Power Plant illumination packages with a dominant share of over 60% of all power plants in the country. Some 20 ongoing power plant lighting projects reinforce this status. • Biggest power station illumination project at Mundra for Tata Group. • First rural electrification project at Janjgir Champa district of Chhattisgarh. A major achievement as more experienced companies are struggling to complete their projects. • Biggest single order for a rural electrification project, worth ` 203 crore for Murshidabad district from NTPCESL. • Sports lighting for all outdoor and indoor multi-purpose stadia for three consecutive National Games; 2002 – Hyderabad, 2007 – Guwahati and 2009 – Ranchi. With all the experience gained over the years in the field of project management, the Special Projects Division is now considering other diversification opportunities in the following areas: • Sports lighting projects for six cricket stadia, including the first-ever stadium in the country using the 6 high mast system and modern concept of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) system for lighting control. • HV packages for 132kV / 220kV / 400kV substations. • R-APDRP Projects. • Very prestigious sports lighting project for the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, which will host the finals of 2011 Cricket World Cup; and also Rajkot Cricket Stadium in Gujarat. • Complete electrification for power plants including cabling, switchgears, DG sets, earthing etc. • Integrated projects of illumination, building management and fire fighting. • Electrification of the world-class Bandra-Worli Sea Link, now Mumbai’s biggest landmark. • Sports lighting projects outside the country. • Securing the order for Ornamental lighting project of HRBC, Kolkata for the second Hoogly Bridge. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. • City Illumination project at Kharghar node of CIDCO – the country’s first major street lighting project using fully galvanized octagonal poles with designer brackets and micro-processor based automatic lighting control and energy conservation system. 04 - Thomas Edison 05 INSIDE STORY Transmission Line Towers (TLT) Division Transmission line towers form the backbone of electrification. It is these towers that enable power lines to be strung across huge distances, and thus enable ‘transportation’ of electricity from power generation plants to their sites of application like factories, offices and homes. The TLT Division boasts one of the finest tower manufacturing facilities on the sub-continent. Meeting every quality requirement, they have been approved and appreciated by the country’s biggest electricity boards and agencies. Official global approval comes by way of ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 certification. INSIDE STORY The Division’s innovative efforts have also made Bajaj Electricals the only company in India to have erected two spans of transmission lines on Monopoles as high as 42m. Monopoles are a modern alternative to conventional and space-consuming lattice-type towers. Requiring less than a fifth of the base width, they are a godsend where land is at a premium either in terms of value (upmarket urban neighbourhoods) or topography (treacherous cross-country tracts). Monopoles are the preferred option in developed countries and the TLT Division’s pioneering efforts are making them popular in India as well. • For TNEB – 10 km Muppandal to Perungudi Single Circuit Line; 12.082 km to LILO 230KV Kayathar–Pudur line at Sankaneri Substation; 92.837 km line from Kayathar to Sankaneri Substation. • For MSEB – 40.1 km line from Vita Substation to Ghatnandre Substation; 38.5 km LILO at Akola Substation; 6 km 132-KV D/C line at Nashik. • For PGCIL – 82.193 km for LILO of NelloreSriperumbudur line at Alamatti Substation; 61 km line from Aravali to Mundka in Haryana. • For RRVPNL – 12 km Sawai Madhopur-Sheopur line; 51 km Phalodi–Aau line, Jodhpur; 61 km Gharsana–Khajuwala line, Bikaner; 27 km Dechu–Kalau line, Jodhpur. The division boasts a showcase of several prestigious projects... • 144 km line from Khammam to Nagarjunasagar. 3500 MT of supplies including two river-crossing towers. • For APTRANSCO – 3 transmission lines of 132 / 220 / 400 KV (48 km) in Warangal and Vijayawada districts of Andhra Pradesh. • 8200 MT covering 200 kms from Ramagundam to Hyderabad. • 7000 MT covering 306 kms spanning Hyderabad-KurnoolGooty. • 5400 MT for the NeelmangalaMysore project. • 4000 MT for MSETCL (MSEB) project in Mumbai. • 3550 MT for RRVPNL (RSEB) project in Jaipur. • 217 Telecom towers with the capacity to withstand various wind speeds, across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Goa for BSNL. It’s a busy order book as well. Currently, the division is executing several large turnkey projects for important clients such as MSETCL, Damodar Valley Corporation, Powergrid Corporation and Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation. To date, the TLT Division has manufactured and supplied in excess of 1,40,000 MT of towers. For the Ramagundam project alone, some 18,700 MT of 400 kV towers have been delivered. In addition to all of the above, the Division has completed a slew of turnkey projects covering everything from route survey, supply and foundation to erection, stringing, testing and commissioning, for various State and Central power utilities. Clients who are adequately serviced by a 19-branch network, strategically spread across the country and thus equipped for faster response and turnaround, irrespective of where the client or their project site is situated. • Lighting Poles and Columns for Street/Area/Garden Lighting • Flag Poles The operations of this division actually pre-dates its own formation. While still LPS, the company entered into the highmast and street lighting business in 1983. Subsequently, when E&P BU trifurcated into its specialised subsidiaries, the operations were brought under the aegis of the Highmast and Street Lighting Division. Over the years, the volume of business has grown consistently, prompting the company to set up facilities for design, development, manufacturing, erection, testing, commissioning and servicing of highmast and street lighting poles. The in-house competence now extends to civil, structural and illumination design and development of accessories. Some of the divisions’s landmark installations include... • Reliance Industries refinery at Jamnagar. • Chennai Port Trust, Chennai. • Essar Steel, Hazira. • Jindal Steel & Power Ltd., Angul. • India’s tallest (63 mtr) flag mast, in Haryana. • Street lighting of the Western Express Highway, Mumbai. • Modern street lighting in Hyderabad. • Upgradation of street lighting system for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. • Banner Posts • Polygonal Poles for traffic signals • Polygonal Gantries for signages. Forever with its finger on the pulse of innovation, the Division has introduced India to GRP and CI & CA poles. Made from strong polymer materials, GRP poles are resistant to all known atmospheric conditions, besides being available in different colours and shapes. As a result, they are a high quality option to clients with discerning tastes. Cast Iron (CI) and Cast Aluminum (CA) poles allow an amazing versatility, which sees them used in numerous lighting applications on streets, in gardens, pedestrian walkways, approach roads, platforms, etc. Such is the level of confidence and acceptance of its offerings that the Highmast & Street Lighting Division is now diversifying into solar and wind energy products as well. Documented confidence too... the Division’s structural designs are validated by IIT, EIL, NTPC, PGCIL, CPWD, Bechtel, PDIL, Toyo and many other Government and private institutions. • • • • Street lighting at MADC, Nagpur. To date, the Division has supplied and commissioned over 1,50,000 octagonal poles and 21,000 masts all over India – some as high as 63 metres. The demand for these products have transcended geographical boundaries, with deliveries being made to places as far afield as Libya, Nigeria, Mauritius and Zambia, in addition to the Middle East. In every sense, the Highmast & Street Lighting Division’s prospects are expressed in its very name. The potential is sky high and the future extremely bright. This division has indeed made great strides. Besides contributing ` 250 crore to E&P BU’s last bottomline, it has also captured a dominant 60% share of the highmast and octagonal pole market in India. It was in that month that the world-class manufacturing facility was commissioned at Ranjangaon, about 55kms from Pune. Suddenly, the coveted figure of Rs. 1000 crore isn’t looking so distant or daunting after all. With business growing by leaps and bounds, the need to augment capacities was felt. Exactly five years after the Ranjangoan Unit became operational, a new plant was commissioned; immediately doubling the capacity of highmasts and octagonal poles. It has also helped halve delivery periods, and thus enhanced the order book too. As all of Ranjangaon Unit’s produce enjoys widening acceptability both domestically and overseas, the rub off on brand E&P BU is tremendous. This arrangement completely eliminates the traditional but cumbersome man-rider procedure. ...and Outside Every component is designed to withstand the vagaries of weather. Care is taken that the foundation itself is designed and cast to safely withstand dynamic loading at the specific site. Another Bajaj Signature The Bajaj Deco-M system of Umbrella Mast has been designed, manufactured and tested for Indian conditions. Which is really saying something given that ambient and climatic conditions vary hugely across the sub continent. Innovation has always been a hallmark of E&P BU. We have pioneered several advances in our scope of business, introducing the country to avant garde elements especially in lighting and transmission. Umbrella Masts is another initiative. The basic issue with lighting atop a mast – as is the case with street lights and other outdoor lighting systems – is that it is difficult to carry out regular maintenance of the luminaires or repaint and replace the canopy. With a single stroke of innovation, Umbrella Masts circumvent these problems. Down to Earth Solutions Umbrella Masts comprise a movable system, which can raise or lower the contraption as desired. When maintenance of the luminaries is required or they have to be replaced, a pulley arrangement lowers the luminary housing perched at the top, bringing it down almost to ground level. Once the maintenance is complete, the same arrangement raises the housing back into position high above the ground. 20 The panoramic umbrella is made from 5 mm FRP in multiple segments and fixed on the carriage fabricated from steel plate and other steel sections. The carriage is also hot dip galvanized. The luminaries and their control gear boxes are mounted under the FRP umbrella. Ensuring that the entire Umbrella Mast is a Bajaj exclusive design, even the luminaries are products of the Bajaj Group. The systems are designed by an in-house team of experienced engineers using the advanced 3D modelling program, TR. No 7 High Masts for Lighting and CCTV (2000 edition). The same has been published by the Institution of Lighting Engineers, UK. Umbrella Masts installed by E&P BU are universally admired for their all-round aesthetics and superb functionality. Standing proud and tall, they literally take innovation sky high. E&P BU’s Umbrella Masts conform to stringent standards of engineering. The hot dip galvanised mast shaft must have the capacity to withstand prevalent wind speeds. The shaft is therefore continuously tapered with polygonal 20 side cross-section. Fabricated from high tensile steel plates, conforming to BS EN 10025 or equivalent, these plates have a minimum yield strength of 355 N/sq.mm. Meticulous Inside... Functionally, the movable system comprises an aluminium pulley mechanism with guides at the top for channelling wires and cables. The base compartment houses a self-sustaining, self lubricating oil-bath worm driven motor operated winch. The electrical connection employs a trailing cable made from multi core, EPR insulated, PCP sheath copper conductor of suitable rating, with a straight coupling connector from the bottom to the junction box at top. Additional wiring uses PVC cable of suitable rating. An electrical control panel, constructed near the mast housing controls, operates the luminaries. The project, commissioned by the Saurashtra Cricket Association, demanded a flood lighting system that fulfils stringent illumination requirements for international level day and night games. The high-tech system comprises four polygonal, hot dip galvanised high masts with fixed head frames. The masts are manufactured at our Ranjangaon Unit. Each mast is fitted with 112 flood light fixtures (2kW each) imported from Abacus, UK. The entire scope of the project comprised supply, installation, testing and commissioning of high masts, flood lights, electrical panels, gear racks, power and control cabling, centralized switching control and earthing system. The main issue was climatic, because Mahabaleshwar is seasonally ravaged by high winds and heavy rains – sometimes 120'' a year. Our men on the job circumvented the problem by executing this beautification project using GRP. The order was worth ` 80 lacs. So appreciative was the client of our capability and speed of execution, they commissioned us for another assignment – the design and development of its amusement park at Global City, Virar, a distant suburb of Mumbai.
