The purpose of the event is to inform and encourage the people to be aware of the International Humanitarian Law through the public viewing of milestone photos that the International Committee of Red Cross took in pursue to continually implement the IHL or also called the “Law of Wars”. Dating back from 1863 with its birth in the Geneva Convention in Switzerland, the IHL persistently sets certain rules and obligations to the different parties involved in conflicts. It is a check and balance system that limits how countries should be responsible if they will be waging war. With an interview with the Cooperation Director of the International Committee of Red Cross, Mr. Aziz Syed Shah Abdul, he said that the event was conducted to encourage young people to become volunteers and know the major issues, concerns, and provisions of the IHL. Mr. Aziz Syed said “Watch carefully: these photographs. Every photograph tells a story and every photograph has a painful or happy story behind it. Try to see beyond the photographs. Try to feel the feeling of those people portrayed in those photograph. Try to find out the human suffering and the serving of Issue No.51 humanity in those photograph and that’s how you will realize that you have something to do for them in your own way.” He also emphasized “you don’t have to be a humanitarian worker in order to help. You can do your own part in your own expertise.” Interested student who wants more information about IHL can log on to www. icrc.org or they can contact the local Red Cross chapter in their area. “Florante at Laura” on PhilSCA stage Hiraya Theater Production on their second performance here in PhilSCA with the help of the Institute of Liberal Arts coordinated by Dr. Rodante G.
