immersing in our sacred texts, deepening our sense of
connection. this year’s learning paths here at the temple
are open to you, whether you are at the outset of your
journey or are already familiar with the terrain.
new this year on occasional tuesdays we will also be
offering electives at the temple and in convenient, off-site
locations (address provided with registration).
this guide has been designed to be easy to use. It begins with
an alphabetical listing of class descriptions that includes
the course instructor, date and times, as well as a cost for
each course. there is also a section detailing the Florence
Melton Adult Mini-School, which we offer at the temple in
partnership with the Marcus Jewish Community Center of
Atlanta's lisa F. Brill Institute of Jewish learning.

are included, making it simple for you to cross-reference

this course is for the Hebrew novice wishing to participate in this
Jewish life cycle. During the fall and winter, emphasis is placed on
Hebrew skills. Study continues through the spring focusing on the
prayer service, writing a d’var torah, chanting skills, torah reading,
and preparations for the b’nei mitzvah service on May 18, 2013.

those we love. However, both Jewish tradition and secular society
have much to offer to help us and our family members prepare for

and the spiritual aspects of thinking about this stage in our families'
lives, including how to start the conversation with our loved ones.

 The Violence of 1096: Crusaders Encountering Jews in Germany

II's call to crusade, the history of the different waves of crusaders
who went through Germany to get to the Holy land, and we will read

he Florence Melton Adult Mini-School is the largest pluralistic adult
Jewish education network in the world. With its international headquarters at the hebrew University of Jerusalem, the melton mini-School
offers adults all over the world the opportunity to acquire Jewish literacy
in an open, trans-denominational, intellectually stimulating learning

A woman's home has long been recognized as her sphere of power
and influence. From their first appearance in Berlin in the late 1780's
to their continuing presence in major US cities today, Jewish women's
salons served as welcoming havens where a diverse group of people
could openly learn and exchange ideas about art, music, literature
and politics/religion. In this course we will meet 13 fascinating Jewish
women whose tastes and philosophies influenced the leading art and

this course offers the opportunity to consider the challenges of Jewish
acculturation to american life and the sacrifices as well as the contributions that have been made over the past 200 years. lessons will
explore such topics as the role of education, the three Generation
Hypothesis, Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, the changing place of
Zionism and the State of Israel, The civil rights movement as a case
study of distinctiveness and involvement, and other issues that address
American Jewish culture and identity. this 14-lesson course asks the
question, 'Is the cup half-empty or half-full?' while debating the future
of Jewish identity in America.
