OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
THE GREAT LITANY
FIRST ANTIPHON—Psalm verses with refrain
Vs.
It is good to give praise unto the Lord, and to chant unto Thy name, O Most High;
To proclaim Thy mercy in the morning, and Thy truth by night. [Refrain]
Refrain: Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.
Vs.
Upright is the Lord our God, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. [Refrain]
Vs.
Glory…now & ever…Amen. [Refrain]
SECOND ANTIPHON—Psalm verses with refrain
Vs.
The Lord is King, He is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength and hath
girded Himself.
Refrain: O Son of God Who rose from the dead, save us who sing to Thee,
Alleluia!
Vs.
For He hath established the world which shall not be shaken. [Refrain]
Vs.
Holiness befits Thy house, O Lord, forevermore. [Refrain]
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto
ages of ages. Amen.
Only Begotten Son and immortal Word of God who for our salvation didst will to be incarnate of the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, who without change didst become
man and wast crucified, O Christ our God, trampling down death by death, who art one of
the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit: save us!
THIRD ANTIPHON—The Beatitudes or “Sermon on the Mount”
In Thy kingdom remember us, O Lord,
when Thou comest in Thy kingdom.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are you when men shall revile you and shall persecute you, and shall say all manner of
evil against you falsely for my sake.
Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.
AT THE LITTLE ENTRANCE, WE SING THE FOLLOWING SPECIAL
HYMNS FOR THE DAY
Troparion of the Resurrection
(Music on p. 49 of Liturgy book)
When Mary stood at Thy grave looking for Thy sacred body,
angelic pow’rs shone above Thy revered tomb,
and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men.
Thou led Hades captive and wast not tempted there-by,
Thou did meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world.
O Thou Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee.
Tone 6 Byzantine melody
harmonized by Fr. J. Finley
Troparion of the Forefeast of Epiphany
Prepare, O Zebulon;
and adorn yourself, O Naphtali!
River Jordan, cease flowing
and receive with joy the Master coming to be baptized!
Adam, rejoice with our First Mother
and do not hide yourself as you did of old in Paradise;
for having seen you naked,
He has appeared to clothe you with the first garment.
Christ has appeared to renew all creation.
Tone 4 (Slavic Chant)
Troparion to St. Athanasius (Music on p. 54 of Liturgy Book) Tone 3 (Byzantine
Holy Bishop Athanasius,
harmonized by Fr. J. Finley
you became a stronghold of Orthodoxy,
strengthening the Church through your divine teachings.
Opposing the heretical opinion of Arius,
you explained and taught that the Son is equal in nature with the Father.
O holy Father, intercede with Christ God
that He may grant us abundant mercy.
Kontakion for the Forefeast of Epiphany
Today the Lord enters the Jordan and cries out to John:
“Do not be afraid to baptize me.//
For I have come to save Adam, the first-formed man.”
Tone 4 (Slavic Chant)
TRISAGION (THRICE-HOLY) HYMN (p. 9 of Liturgy book)
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Tone 6
To Thee will I cry, O Lord, O my God,
do not be silent unto me. (PS 27/28:1)
Epistle Reading—2 Timothy 4:5-8
Timothy, my son, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your
ministry.
For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have
fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the Faith. Henceforth there is laid up
for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that
Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Preparatory Psalm Verses with Alleluia Refrain Before the Gospel
Chanter:
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
People:
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
Tone 8
v:
O God, be bountiful to us and bless us, show the light of Your
countenance upon us, and have mercy on us! (Ps 65/66:2)
v:
That we may know Your way upon the earth, and Your salvation
among all nations. (65/66:3)
Gospel Reading— Mark 1:1-8
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in the prophets, "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his
paths straight"
John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was
clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild
honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose
sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
LITURGY OF THE FAITHFUL
Communion of the Clergy (Liturgy Book page 32)
Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest! (Ps 148:1)
Hymn during Communion of the People (Liturgy Book, Page 33)
Receive the Body of Christ, taste the fountain of immortality. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Many thanks to
Lisa Ballew and
the Festal Decorating crew for
adorning our
church so beautifully for the feast
days!
Some of our Jr. Highers decorating the
church Christmas tree
Thank you!
What a beautiful, full and festive weekend we had for the
Feast of the Nativity!
We began Christmas Eve with the chanting and singing of the Royal Hours, which are FILLED
with prophecies and other scripture and hymns which speak of our Lord’s coming.
•
In the evening we celebrated the Matins and Liturgy for the feast in candle light, with the
choir singing both services with great joy and beauty.
•
A reception followed the services for those who were able to stay for a bit of Christmas
cheer and fellowship.
On Christmas morning we served our annual St. Brigid Outreach breakfast in Isla Vista. There
was food and merriment a-plenty. We had over 50 people from the parish participating in some
way, whether it was providing food, helping with set-up, singing carols, serving in the food line,
greeting guests, organizing the gift table and helping to distribute the gifts, or helping with clean
-up. All went without a hitch and the Spirit of Christmas was in abundance! Many thanks to
Richard and Susan Barre for coordinating the breakfast and providing such superb leadership!
On Saturday, December 26th, during Vespers we lit candles for and prayed for the souls of
infants who have died before, during or shortly after birth, in commemoration of the Slaying of
the 14,000 Infants by Herod the King. (celebrated by the Church on December 29th) The poignant prayers and hymns were extremely moving for those in attendance.
And on Sunday, December 27th, we celebrated the After-feast of the Nativity with all of the
festal music from Christmas Eve sung again during the Divine Liturgy, some carols, a holiday
potluck, and the Blessing of the Graves at Goleta Cemetery, where we blessed each tombstone
of our deceased parishioners, family members and friends of the parish. Eighteen of us were
gathered at the cemetery. We began with the Trisagion Memorial Prayers, and sang the
Troparion of the Nativity as we walked to each gravesite. The clergy blessed each grave with
holy water, a bouquet was left on each tombstone and we sang “Memory Eternal.” After visiting each grave, we ended with the singing of Christmas carols at the top of the hill overlooking
the cemetery.
So many people stepped up to help throughout the weekend.
Thank you to “those who serve and those who sing,” and all who made
contributions of decorations, food, labor, and joy!

ABOUT OUR PRAYER LISTS:
Prayer requests in the bulletin are prayed out loud during the deacons’ litanies and should be submitted to the church office—office@stathanasius.org.
Prayer requests put into the wooden box in the narthex will be said silently at the altar at most services. During the Great Entrance of the Divine Liturgy, only Orthodox Christians are commemorated, and that list is comprised of the sick, those celebrating special occasions listed in the bulletin,
and those who prepared the Eucharist bread. Others are prayed for during the Proskomedia
(Preparation of the Bread and Wine for Communion).
ST. ATHANASIUS BOOK CENTER
The church bookstore is located in the fellowship hall. The two enclosed cabinets
hold icons, books, and other items that are FOR SALE. See Terri Speier if you are
looking for jewelry such as a cross or chain. Payment should be made at time of
purchase and placed in the brown lock box ON THE BOOKSTORE SHELF. Make
checks payable to “St. Athanasius Book Center.”
