TECHNICAL INFORMATION 132 Your handy “how to” guide for rigging, eyebolts, wire rope grips and slings. TECHNICAL INFORMATION HANDLING STEEL PLATE Steel plate can be lifted with: n Plate clamps that are designed to increase the purchase on the plate as the plate is lifted TECHNICAL INFORMATION LIFTING HORIZONTALLY n It is recommended that a minimum of four plate clamps and spreader beam are used for lifting steel plate horizontally. For horizontal lifts use appropriate plate clamps. Use a spreader beam for long thin plates to prevent dangerous flapping, sagging and vibration. SHEAVES Do not use home made type plate clamps or plate dogs. Sheaves lead the rope over the head of cranes and hoists and are used in pulley systems to gain a mechanical advantage. Make sure that the angle between slings when lifting steel plate is 60º or less Use a spreader beam if the angle between the two legs is likely to be more than 60º Steel plate can be lifted vertically or horizontally. FLARE ANGLE AND GROOVE DEPTH The groove depth of a sheave should not be less than 1.5 times the rope diameter. However if the rope is positively prevented from leaving the groove the minimum depth of the groove can be equal to the rope diameter. Always use a spreader beam for lifting steel plate if the angle between two slings exceeds 60° LIFTING VERTICALLY: n Use a plate clamp where a sling cannot be attached and there is no lifting hole. An example is the dished and flanged end plate for pressure vessel. n NOTE: it can be difficult to remove or attach a sling where plate is stored vertically in a rack or is to be fed into bending rolls n As a plate touches the ground and the tension is released from the sling a single hook can come out of the hole and cause the plate to fall. To prevent this, lift with a hook that has been put through a ring attached to short length of chain that is shackled to a plate clamp. n Always make sure that the tension remains in the slings until the plate is in place. The sheave groove sides should have a flare angle of a minimum of 42º and a maximum of 52º. Correct set-up for lifting steel plate vertically The grooves should be slightly larger than the nominal diameter of the rope. Grooves which are too large will flatten the rope. Grooves that are too small will pinch the rope and the extra friction can abrade it. 133 TECHNICAL INFORMATION TECHNICAL INFORMATION 132 TECHNICAL INFORMATION TECHNICAL INFORMATION WEDGE ROPE SOCKETS There are many dangers associated with wedge type sockets and riggers should ensure that they are set up correctly. Fitting a wedge socket on a rope The rope diameter must be equal to the diameter inside the socket, and when the wedge is pulled tight the wedge must not protrude beyond the socket body. The hoist rope must be reeved into the socket body so that there is a straight line between the live rope and the anchorage. COLLAR EYEBOLTS EYEBOLTS WITH LINK Collar Eyebolts may be used up to the marked safe working load (SWL) for axial ie. vertical lifting only. Collar eyebolts may be used for non-axial loading provided that the SWL is reduced by the appropriate factor. Eyebolts with link offer considerable advantages over collar eyebolts when loading need to be applied at the axis and/or the plane of the eye. If the rope is reeved in the opposite direction so that the live end is on the sloping side of the wedge, the wire will fail at the point where the rope enters the socket. Do not place rope grips (bulldog clips) across both live rope and the dead end because it can lead to severe damage to the hoist wire. Leave rope straight Wedge must not protrude outside end of socket. Wedge rope sockets may be used when spliced eyes are difficult to reeve or they would have to be made after the rope is in place. Correct Wrong – will hasten rope fatigue Incorrect method of fitting pairs of collar eyebolts, eyebolts with link, and Swivel Hoist Rings. Correct method fitting pairs of collar eyebolts, eyebolts with link, and Swivel Hoist Rings. TYPES OF EYEBOLT Eyebolt with link- suitable for all general purpose applications. Collar eyebolt – suitable for most general duties (A collar eyebolt fitted with a link is not the same as an eyebolt with link and must not be treated as such.) Dynamo eyebolt- suitable only where a truly axial load is guaranteed. CAPACITY When used at an angle or in pairs it is necessary to reduce the SWL by the factors given in the table below. ANGLE FACTORS Maximum load to be lifted = angle factor x SWL for a pair of eyebolts Type of eyebolt Wedge – type sockets must not be used where moving loads could dislodge socket wedges out of the body. Included angle x between the slinglegs 0 < x < 30º 30º < x < 60º 60º < x < 90º Eyebolt with link 1.0 0.8 0.63 Collar eyebolt 0.63 0.4 0.25 Correct method of securing dead end of rope when using a wedge socket The advantages of using wedge rope sockets as anchorages are simplicity, ease and speed of applying and detaching, and that they do not damage the rope to any appreciable extent. Do not set up wedge sockets where a block being raised can hit and dislodge the wedge. USING EYEBOLTS SAFETY n Tighten the eyebolt down firmly by hand. The collar must sit evenly on the contact surface. Do not use tommy bars, grips or wrenches to tighten eyebolts. n With collar eyebolts used in pairs, the eyes must be in the correct plane. Use shims but do not machine the collar or over tighten. n Never reeve a sling through the eyes, links or shackles fitted to eyebolts used in pairs as this will impose a severe resultant force onto the eyebolts. n When using eyebolts with multi-leg slings use eyebolts with links or collar eyebolts taking care to derate them for angular loading. n Where a single eyebolt is used, use a swivel or swivel hook to prevent the eyebolt unscrewing if the load rotates. Loads can spin when lifted with a single eyebolt, causing the eyebolt to unscrew from the load.Mouse the eyebolt to the load to stop unscrewing. Eyebolts are often put on large motors or similar to lift the casing off. It can be dangerous to lift loads with the eyebolts that are provided on the load. If no information is provided about an eyebolt sling the load with slings. A wire rope grip should be applied to the tail (only) of the rope below the socket to prevent dislodgement of the wedge. WIRE ROPE GRIPS Installation of wire rope grips (bulldog) They can be one of the most dangerous fittings used by riggers if not used correctly. If the bolts are over tightened the rope will be crushed or if the bolts are under tightened slipping will occur. At least three wire rope grips should be used, with the saddles on the live part of the rope, and the U-bolt pressing on the less heavily loaded tail of the rope. They should be spaced at least six rope diameters apart. Do not use bulldog grips on any load hoisting ropes. Correct method of fitting wire grips Incorrect method of fitting wire grips 135 TECHNICAL INFORMATION TECHNICAL INFORMATION 134 TECHNICAL INFORMATION TECHNICAL INFORMATION BLOCK CONCEPTS WORKING WITH BLOCKS MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE OVERHAUL WEIGHT Mechanical advantage is the leverage gained by a multiple part block. The theoretical (ignore friction) advantage is equal to the number of parts of line supporting the traveling block (load). Total load on the block is sum of all loads placed on the block and fitting. Example Parts of line = 4 Mechanical advantage = 4 Line pull required = 6000/4 = 1500LBS Lower Block Load = 6000LBS Required W.L.L = 6000LBS Upper Block Load = 6000 + Line pull + gear = 6000 + 1500 + Gear + 7500 LBS. Plus Required W.L.L = 7500LBS.PLUS To determine the weight of the block or overhaul ball that is required to free fall the block, the following information is need: Size of the wire rope, number of line parts, type of sheaving bearing, length of crane boom and drum friction. ANGLE FACTOR MULTIPLIERS Angle Factor Angle Factor 0 2.00 100 1.29 10 1.99 110 1.15 20 1.97 120 1.00 30 1.93 130 0.84 40 1.87 135 0.76 45 1.84 140 0.68 50 1.81 150 0.52 60 1.73 160 0.35 70 1.64 170 0.17 80 1.53 180 0.00 90 1.41 - - BLOCK REEVING Straight laced reeving is a basic method of placing the rope through a set of blocks. The end of the rope is fed through the outside sheave of the upper block to the outside sheave of the lower(traveling) block. This caontinues to the last sheave. ADVANATAGES: 1. Allows blocks to run closer together. 2. is simplier 3. Has no reverse bend DISADVANTAGES: Tilting because of the imbalanaced loading can cause block rotation and wear of the sheaves and wire rope. SYMMETRICAL REEVING Reeve blocks symmetrically to distribute load evenly. All sheaves must be reeved to chieve the full working load limit of the block. A SINGLE LINE SNATCH BLOCK USED TO CHANGE LOAD LINE DIRECTION CAN BE SUBJECTED TO TOTAL LOADS GREATLY DIFFERENT FROM THE LINE PULL. TOTAL LOAD = LINE PULL TIMES ANGLE FACTOR MULTIPLIER BLOCK CABLING 1. Reduce wire rope length 2. Use even part reeving 3. Dead end to boom 4. In the illustration below there are 19 wires to the strand and 6 strands around the core making up the rope. As the rope lays into a sheave friction occurs and the outside of the wires wear and become flat. Langs lay ropes are much less prone to outer wire wear than ordinary lay. It is important not to confuse wires and strands. If a strand is broken, the rope is unusable. A single broken wire in a sling is not as important unless broken immediately below a metal fitting or anchorage. As outer wires wear and the wire rope is bent over sheaves the fatigue will start to break them. The maximum number of broken wires allowed in a FSWR is 10 per cent of the total number of wires over a length 8 times the diametre of the rope. For example: 25mm diameter / 6 x 19 Seale Diameter = 25mm 25 x 8 = 200mm length Total wires in 6 x 19 = 114 wires 10 per cent of 114 = 11.4 wires Maximum number of broken wires allowed in a length of 200mm = 11 Composition of wire rope The core can be: n Fibre Core (FC) n Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC) n Plastic Core (PC) BASIC RIGGING RULES Always include the weight of the lifting tackle (slings, cages, spreaders etc) as well as any containers to the total load when determining SWL. We recommend only using grade 80 or 100 chain when lifting. For grade 80 chain the SWL for a straight life is calculated as 32 x diameter squared. Eg. A 10mm chain as a straight lift capacity of 3200kg. Flexible Steel Wire rope (FSWR), in good condition, has a lifting capacity of 8 x diamter squared unless stated differently on the load chart. Eg A 10mm FSWR has a straight lift capacity of 800kg. When lifting with a 3 or 4 leg sling only 2 legs are considered to be taking the load when it’s a rigid load. When using a multi leg sling or multiple slings, angle factors reduce the SWL (refer sling charts). Never exceed 120 degrees between slings. This is one of the reasons knots shouldn’t be tied in slings. When reeving a sling around a square load the SWL is reduced by 50%. The distance between the 2 lifting points on a load should not exceed the length of sling. A 6/19 (six strands of 19 wires each) is the minimum FSWR construction that can be used for slings. COMMON KNOTS Lay is the direction the wires are formed into strands and the strands are formed into the finished rope. The strands can be laid either left or right around the core. In left hand lay the strands are laid anti-clockwise and in right hand lay they are laid clockwise. Ordinary lay is where the wires are laid in the opposite direction to the strands. Lang’s lay is where the wires are laid in the same direction as the strands. There is therefore: Right hand ordinary lay – RHOL Right hand Lang’s lay – RHLL Left hand ordinary lay – LHOL Left hand Lang’s lay – LHLL Maximum number of broken wires allowed in a length of 200mm = 11 Right Hand Ordinary Lay Left Hand Lang’s Lay Right Hand Lang’s Lay Alternate Lay Left Hand Ordinary Lay One Rope Lay Sheet Bend Make a loop with the heavier line. Pass second line up through loop, around both heavy lines then back under itself. Clove Hitch Make a turn around a post with the standing part on the top. Take a second turn around in the same direction and feed the free end through the eye of the second turn and pull tight. Trucker’s Hitch Tie off one end of rope. Tie a slippery half hitch in the middle of the line to form a small loop. Bowline From an eye in the rope with the standing part underneath. Run the free end up through the eye then take a turn around the standing part. With free end, make a half turn around a fitting and bring the free end back up to the loop. Feed through and pull line tight. Finish off with one or two half hitches. Feed the free end back down in to the eye and hold there while pulling standing part to tighten down knot. 141 TECHNICAL INFORMATION TECHNICAL INFORMATION 140 TECHNICAL INFORMATION TECHNICAL INFORMATION MEASUREMENT TABLES VOLUMES OF COMMON SHAPES HAND SIGNALS Whistle, Bell or Buzzer Signal Motion Hoisting Up 2 Short Hoisting Down 1 Long Luffing Boom Up 3 Short Luffing Boom Down 4 Short Slewing Right 1 Long 2 Short Slewing Left 1 Long 1 Short Jib Out; Telescoping Boom Extend 1 Long 3 Short Jib In; Telescoping Boom Retract 1 Long 4 Short Travel & Traverse Not Applicable STOP 1 Short Motion Hand Signal Hand Signal Whistle, Bell or Buzzer Signal Length 1 inch 2.54 cm 1 mile 1.609 km Area 1 square inch 6.451 sq. cm 1 square feet 0.092 sq. metres 1 acre 0.404 hectares 1 square mile 2.589 sq. km Volume 1 cubic foot 0.028 cu. metres 1 cubic yard 0.764 cu. metres 1 cubic foot per minute 0.472 L/sec Capacity 1 UK pint 0.56 litres 1 UK gallon 4.54 litres 1 US gallon 3.8 litres Weight 1 ounce 28.35 g 1 pound 0.45 kg 1 ton 1016 kg 1 tonne 1000 kg 1 stone 6.35 kg 1 US short ton 907 kg Force 1 Kilo Newton 102 kg Force 1 Foot Pound 1.356 Newton metres Pressure 1 PSI 0.069 bar Energy 1 Horse Power 0.75 Kilowatts Table of Masses Aluminium 2700 kg/cu. The post-war building boom was in full swing and construction equipment was eagerly sought. A customer asked Walter if he could borrow a new Lightburn concrete mixer rather than buy one. Walter replied, “I won’t lend it but I will hire it to you.” And so Kennards Hire was born. Today we are one of the largest and most respected hire companies in Australia with over 120 branches in all states and territories. Our business philosophy has never changed: offer customers best quality products, excellent service, and act with integrity and honesty. From little things big things grow New directions In 1991, after almost 30 years building their business, the brothers amicably parted ways to concentrate on their various Kennards interests. Neville and his son developed Kennards Self Storage into one of the largest operations of its kind in Australia and New Zealand. In the early 1950’s, the Kennard family moved to Mosman and began trading from the family home, where they also sold and hired car roof racks. As a young organisation – steadily amassing a range of construction equipment for hire – Walter's business quickly outgrew the home garage in Mosman. A premises was found in Greenwich and the business eventually moved to Artarmon in 1972. Andy focused on the thriving hire business, expanding its network to include hire centres throughout Sydney, Illawarra, Newcastle and the North Coast; Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and North Queensland, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin, and regional centres such as Dubbo, Geelong, Launceston and Alice Springs. From the beginning, Walter's family was heavily involved in the business; wife Theo in administration and the three children, Neville, Joan and Andrew, cleaning, and repairing the equipment. In 1962, at just 23, the oldest son Neville bought the business from his father and took over its running, joined two years later by his younger brother Andy. Our determination to find the best way to meet customers’ needs is central to Kennards’ business philosophy. This tradition of service innovation led to the creation of our specialist hire businesses, to provide customers with a wider base of products and expertise. Chips off the old block Like their father, Neville and Andy were always open to new ideas to build their enterprise. Various trips to the US opened their eyes to possibilities that would greatly impact not only their own business – always buy quality products and never run out of stock – and also the hire industry in Australia. Impressed by the culture of sharing and exchange he experienced at an American Rental Association convention, Neville went on to found The Hire and Rental Industry Association of Australia. This saw competitors working side by side to foster a progressive, profitable and ethical hire industry. Specialist businesses offer dedicated solutions Today, four specialist hire divisions, with a national branch network of their own, are dedicated to providing product solutions to the construction challenges faced by key industrial segments. The Kennards specialist businesses include: Kennards Concrete Care – specialises in hire equipment for concrete surface preparation including cutting, sawing and drilling, and repair and maintenance. Kennards Pump & Power – offers a wide range of commercialsize pumps, generators and accessories ideal for the building, mining, agricultural and marine industries. Kennards Traffic – hires an extensive range of traffic guidance and control equipment such as attenuators, VMS boards and arrow boards, and portable lighting towers, to ensure a safe and efficient work zone. Kennards Lift & Shift – commenced operations in January 2003, with the objective of supplying an extensive range of materials handling, engineering tools, relocation machinery, and hauling and torque equipment that was not readily available in traditional hire centres in Australia. As a result of our commitment to providing you with solutions, Kennards Lift & Shift has built a reputation for innovation. Regular trips overseas, to source the latest technology, mean that we continue to introduce new products; some of these are unique to us. Knowledgeable staff and reliable, modern equipment make Kennards Lift & Shift the first choice. We only stock reputable brands with proven performance, offer 24x7 service and deliver to any site in Australia. Walter Kennard And for your convenience, new Lift & Shift hire centres recently opened in Townsville and Dandenong to better service North Queensland’s growing industrial and mining sectors and Victoria’s south east manufacturing and logistics corridor. Lending a hand As a family-minded enterprise, Kennards Hire is committed to supporting the wellbeing of children. In September and October each year we hold our Kennards for Kids campaign, donating $1 from every hire contract to medical, educational and life-skills programs. We're delighted to be a major long-term sponsor of these charities and organisations, in addition to supporting environmental research initiatives to safeguard the future of endangered native animals. Future Goals Kennards Hire proudly remains family-owned. Our management and staff strive to provide high standards in all our operations and dealings with customers. Our goal is to continue to provide a range of equipment that is the best available in Australia, easily accessible in our growing network of hire centres, and backed by excellent service that is second to none. GEAR UP FOR PEAK AIRCON DEMAND The gantry ascends in a perfectly smooth operation. ANZAC BRIDGE CHALLENGE ANSWERED Four 6-tonne pneumatic chain hoists from Kennards Lift & Shift were used to lift the ANZAC Bridge maintenance gantry, weighing almost 13 tonne and spanning nearly 34 metres, from the ground back in to its original location under the deck of Sydney’s ANZAC Bridge. The carefully planned and executed operation was an important step in the current maintenance program for the bridge, which is a key part of Sydney’s road network and the longest concrete cable-stayed bridge in Australia. NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is working with a team of specialists and has formed the Bridge Solutions Alliance (BSA) with Baulderstone Pty Ltd, Freyssinet Australia and SAGE Automation to deliver the maintenance project, therefore ensuring the operation of the structure into the future. “The BSA team came up with the solution and asked Kennards Lift & Shift to source the necessary equipment to achieve the 33 metre lift." It is the first major program of maintenance since the bridge opened to traffic in 1995 and will take place over a two year period. Work includes installing permanent access systems to allow maintenance access to hard to reach areas of the bridge, improving the bridge’s stay cables to prevent rain-wind induced vibration, and installing new fences along the entire length of the bridge on both sides. For longer reach, the gas hoist, which runs off compressed air or CO2, is popular. These lightweight aluminium units come in two sizes with lifting heights up to 3.8m and 5.6m. Trolley skates were hired to move a Power Pack chiller. The unit was dismantled and the components taken to the 27th level of a city office block where it was reassembled. The counter-weighted material hoist lift units up to 6m and has a SWL of 300kg @ 450mm load centre. It weighs 312kg, including 128kg of counterweight, but the legs fold up for transportation. Ducting and vertical movements can be handled with a GL lift in two sizes with lift height of 3m and 3.6m or a T-bar hoist, also in two sizes, with lift heights of 2.3m and 3.3m. Gantries, roustabouts and a range of winches are also available, while heavy units can be handled and moved around on the ground with toe jacks, trolley skates and pallet trucks. CONSERVATORY CHALLENGE TAKEN UP A challenge which was presented during the building of a conservatory in Adelaide is another example of how Kennards Lift & Shift works with customers to find answers to difficult problems. Glass roof panels, 4.7m x 0.8m, needed to be lifted and tilted to 40 degrees for installation. Conventional glass lifters were ruled out because the glass was so long and thin. The pads would not have been narrow enough, or there would have been too much of an overhang, possibly causing the glass to flex and crack. The Bridge Solutions Alliance Project Engineer said that while they were able to remove the gantry with cranes, they were not able to reinstate it easily using the same method due to access problems and gantry modifications which made it very difficult to get secure lifting points. “Air winches were the best option for replacement. By using them, we were able to completely pre-assemble the gantry safely whilst on the ground and lift it one piece", he said. Kennards Lift & Shift has equipment to help air conditioning contractors cope with peak demand, whether it be for small units in homes or chillers in office towers. The Lift & Shift team at Hindmarsh came up with the idea of using two recently-introduced, 320kg vacuum glass lifters in tandem. These units each have four pads in a line, and are perfect for long thin panels. Air hoists attach to the runway rail before it is connected to the gantry. Joined with the help of a spreader beam, the units provided a single lifting point of 635kg capacity. Using the crane’s two lifting hooks, the glass was lifted, tilted and installed with perfect control. Two glass lifters act as one. 153 LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES 152 LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES The jacks operated off a new hydraulic split flow pump. A Kennards Lift & Shift torque wrench tightens nuts on the 1250 tonne crusher at a sydney scrap metal yeard. TORQUE ABOUT TIGHT WORK SPACES… During regular maintenance on huge metal cutting and crushing machinery, crews have to work in very tight spaces, tightening and untightening hundreds of nuts. Kennards Lift & Shift has a range of conventional square drive hydraulic torque wrenches, as well as the more compact cassette model. Both models are small, lightweight, and powerful with a clean and smooth radius, providing fast, calibrated tensioning and removal of nuts, even if they have not moved for decades. LIFE LINE CUTS RISK At Pittwater Rugby Park, two large concrete tanks that store bore water have to be cleaned out to remove 80mm thick sludge and a build-up of iron deposits. The tripod and recovery system and gas detector, from Kennards Lift & Shift, were essential safety equipment. The tanks are nine metres across and 3.5m deep. Hire is a quick, cost-effective answer to confined space safety needs, and is particularly good if equipment is not required very often or extra items are needed. Kennards Lift & Shift also has davit arm units, air breathing apparatus packs, rope positioning devices, safety harnesses and safety harness spreaders, fall arrestors-inertia reels and safety lanyards. The square drive hydraulic torque wrench range includes 3/4in, 1in, 1½in and 2½in drives, with a complete range of sockets. They allow pre-set torques of between 172Nm to 36872Nm. Each unit has a chart showing capability in Nm and foot-pounds. The cassette model does not involve the use of bulky sockets, but instead operates via a link that is altered to the size bolt in the application which is particularly good in tight access areas. Thiess John Holland (TJH) used the hydraulic cylinders (inset picture) while installing bearings on a bridge over the CLEM 7 tunnel. 20 JACKS LIFT BRISBANE BRIDGE Twenty hydraulic cylinders, each capable of lifting 100 tonne and operating off just one pump, were hired from Kennards Lift & Shift for bridge construction work in Brisbane. The jacks were used while installing bearings on a bridge over the CLEM 7 tunnel, which runs beneath the Brisbane River. The joint venture between Thiess and John Holland Group is constructing the 6.7km Airport Link tollroad, Australia's logest tunnel. The TJH Project Engineer said the 100 tonne capacity low profile jacks with tilt saddles and locking nuts, required for the installation of these bearings, were difficult to hire within Australia. Kennards Lift & Shift was able to source them overseas and have them air freighted to Australia to align with road closures. Kennards Lift & Shift had the jacks on site just six days after receiving the request. They operate off a hydraulic split flow pump, which is new to the Kennards Lift & Shift range. The three phase pump, with 100 litre capacity, connect to four manifolds, with 30m length hoses running to the 20 hydraulic cylinders. Lift & Shift staff also helped set them up, gave a demonstration and were available on the nights when the work was done. This hire is a further demonstration of Kennards Lift & Shift’s capability in the heavy lifting area and its willingness to go the extra mile to meet customers’ needs. 155 LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES 154 LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES 157 LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES LIFT & SHIFT CASE STUDIES 156 Temporary concrete segmental tunnel rings are dismantled. 10 TONNE HOISTS HIRE FOR AIRPORT LINK Six 10 tonne pneumatic chain hoists from Kennards Lift & Shift were used for work on twin tunnels, which are part of Australia’s largest road infrastructure project. The $4.6 billion combined road and busway in Brisbane’s north includes Airport Link, Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) and the Airport Roundabout Upgrade. The Project Engineer for the tunnel construction said the pneumatic chain hoists were used in the dismantling of temporary concrete segmental tunnel rings, which were built to launch the two 12.48m Dia TBMs. The larger segments weighed eight tonne each, with the smaller keystone segments weighing three tonne. In total, there were 42 segments, six of which were keystone segments, to be removed. Thiess John Holland (TJH), a joint venture between Thiess and John Holland Group were selected as the contractor to design and construct this world class project. For each segment, two hoists were used with two leg chains so that the segment was lifted with four points of contact. Kennards Lift & Shift provided the pneumatic chain hoists. The largest TBMs (tunnel boring machines) ever to operate in Australia – each about 165m long with a cutter head measuring 12.48m in diameter – are being used on Airport Link. The Project Engineer said Kennards Lift & Shift was chosen as a supplier based on our ability to provide six identical air hoists, price and service. The tunnel borer is lifted from Botany Bay. RAISING A MONSTER FROM THE DEEP A large modular spreader beam from Kennards Lift & Shift was used in the lifting of a 98 tonne tunnel boring machine from the waters of Botany Bay. Maximum load capacity is 145 tonne at 13.5m, while at 20 metres it can lift up to 76 tonne. It was a delicate operation as the seven sections of the TBM had to be lifted independently to avoid any load being placed on the joins, which would have damaged seals and allowed water to penetrate. The tunnel borer was 17 metres long, 2.4 metres in diameter and the weight of the seven sections ranged from 4.9 tonne to 27 tonne. The contractor had intended to create his own beam and was delighted with the modular nature and availablity of our beam.
