CCNA Discovery: Networking for Home and Small Businesses Chapter 2 Case Study
CHAPTER 2 OBJECTIVES •
Describe the purpose of an operating system (OS) and identify common operating systems available. •
Perform an actual or simulated installation of an operating system and prepare the computer to participate on the network. •
Maintain the operating system. SCENARIO 2 You have now decided on a range of computers and peripherals that you believe would meet the requirements of the OneWorld Real Estate Company as they plan to move to their new purpose built office. These break down into four groups: 1. A fixed location, desktop machine for use by the Office Manager. 2. A dedicated server for file storage, services etc. 3. Laptop computers that can be networked for the owners. 4. Additional peripheral equipment (printers, fax, scanner, storage). In addition, you have circulated suggested laptop specifications for the agents to consider, since they will generally be responsible for purchasing their own equipment. As a result of your suggestions, one of the owners has requested that you also investigate the possibility of donating the more current machine to a local charity organization that aims to teach disadvantaged youth how to use computer technology. Of course, you realize that this will require it to be refurbished and rebuilt so as to not compromise any information. TASKS 2 1. The owners have some concerns about both the associated costs and ease of use, and have asked you to provide a short briefing paper that lists the advantages and disadvantages of the generally available operating systems for each. This should also include the ease of installation and maintenance, and a comparison of the likely costs over a five year amortization period. As it appears that there is some confusion about the role of an operating system and its relationship to the application software that you will recommend, you should include a summary in your introduction. © 2009 Cisco Learning Institute

2. The administrator of the local charity is concerned about how a pre‐owned machine will be supplied in such a way that it is completely cleaned of all commercially sensitive material. She is also concerned about the legitimacy of any software that may be on the machine – both operating system and applications. Be prepared to present a short (oral or written) briefing to the administrator describing how you would plan to allay her concerns. Specifically, you should include in your explanation how you intend to reload an operating system, and the options available. © 2009 Cisco Learning Institute
