Chabot College Fall 2008 Course Outline for Computer Application Systems 92A NETWORKING FOR HOME AND SMALL BUSINESSES Catalog Description: 92A - Networking for Home and Small Businesses 3 units First of four courses in the Cisco® Networking Academy® CCNA® Discovery program, providing career-oriented, IT-skills instruction. CCNA Discovery prepares the student for the Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT™) and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA™) exams. Students will plan, install, verify and troubleshoot a personal computer and home/small business network, configure Internet applications and services, and recognize and mitigate security threats. 2 hours lecture, 2 hours laboratory. [Typical contact hours: lecture 35, laboratory 35] Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. set up a personal computer system, including the operating system, interface cards, and peripheral devices; 2. plan and install a home or small business network and connect it to the Internet; 3. verify and troubleshoot network and Internet connectivity; 4. share resources such as files and printers among multiple computers; 5. recognize and mitigate security threats to a home network; 6. configure and verify common Internet applications; 7. configure basic IP services through a GUI.
