New licensed editions
On this page you will once again find the titles of our latest licensed
editions. The titles are published by Cornelsen Verlag and Cornelsen
Verlag Scriptor.
Short Course Series, Russia, Delta Publishing House, was developed for
learners wishing to increase their communication skills in English
or improve their English for specific business purposes. The short
courses can be used independently or in conjunction with other course
materials and cover CEF levels B1 and B2 depending on the topic.
English G 2000 D edition (Way to Win Year 8), Czech Republic, Fraus
Publishing House, was developed for young adults and reflects the fact
that whereas English remains a foreign language for today’s generation
of young people, it is by no means foreign to them. The course is aimed
at the full range of abilities from stronger to weaker students and leads
to CEF level B1 in six volumes.
Job Matters Series, Czech Republic, Fraus Publishing House, in addition
to the general coursebook with supplementary material, this series
features workbooks which revise and consolidate subject-specific
English vocabulary. To date, these workbooks are available for five
different vocational areas. Supplementary materials and an audio CD
accompany each booklet.
Professional Basics (various titles), Czech Republic, Grada Publishing,
is a series from our reference book programme which offers concrete
assistance with background information and tried-and-tested recommendations for numerous business situations.
Focus Mathematics 8 Schoolwork Practice, Lithuania, Sviesa Publishers,
provides interesting theoretical and practical tasks which enable school
students to experience mathematics for themselves and to get to know
it as a means of understanding and describing our environment. The
variety of tasks encourages students to practise mathematical basics in
depth and to learn problem-solving techniques.

fied success. Over 170 German
teachers from all over China
accepted the invitation and
took part in workshops and
discussions about the future of
the German language in China.
This first conference took place
just as the German Foreign Office budgeted for extra funds for
German as a Foreign Language
under the initiative Schools: partners for the Future. The initiative
has been greeted with enthusiasm in China. More and more
schools want to include German
as a Foreign Language in their
curriculum. As thanks for a job
well done, Cornelsen’s Head of
Licensing, Holger Behm, (right)
presented the organisers with a
certificate on behalf of Cornelsen to honour the achievement
of the first German-Teaching
Conference in China.
IN BRIEF
Market leader in English
for three generations
Over 60 years of English with materials from Cornelsen Verlag
The beginning
My name is Peter Pim – After the
war, many children began English
lessons with this sentence. It is
the beginning of lesson 1 of Peter
Pim and Billy Ball, Cornelsen’s
English coursebook. The book
laid the foundation stone for the
success of the publishing house
and for modern English teaching
in the Federal Republic. The first
volume appeared in 1948.
The course is both typical of its
era and at the same time ahead of
its time. Its carefully-conceived
educational concept and creativity with the foreign language
are impressive. Admittedly the
approach is teacher-centred, but,
thanks to Peter Pim, the grammar-translation method no longer forms the primary means
of instruction as in the style of
Latin tuition. Communication
– listening and speaking skills –
are given more prominence, exemplified by the information on
pronunciation, rhymes and songs
in Peter Pim and Billy Ball.
English G –
the beginning of an era
The elementary and secondary
schools in Germany – the Volksschulen – worked with the various
Peter Pim and Billy Ball books for
decades. But the passage of time
called for modernisation and thus
in 1970 came a new publication:
English H (for the Hauptschulen –
secondary schools) followed in
1972 by English G (for Gymnasien and Realschulen – grammar
schools and other secondary
schools).
English G soon became a force to
be reckoned with in the school
book arena. With the next generation of teaching materials, Cor-
nelsen became market leader in
English as a school subject.
During a process of continual
improvement, the needs and
wants of teachers were taken into consideration, and conversely,
the teaching materials influenced
the style of teaching.
The new type of English course
is characterised by its orientation
in the present, its task-based and
communicative approach. English
G is a pioneer in this development
in foreign language teaching. The
new concepts allow teachers a lot
of flexibility. They don’t need to
work through the book page by
page; they are able to switch between different sections of a unit,
between acquisition, grammar
and practice exercises.
English G 2000 –
The path to success
Cornelsen achieved the hopedfor recognition after the publication of English G 2000 in
1997. The new schoolbook again
became the most successful German EFL publication and increased its market presence.
It introduces significant developments, which only later become
noticeable in curricula. A primary feature of English G 2000
is its emphasis on independent
and active learning: exciting
texts, creative games and projects
mean that lessons are varied. Independent study is expected in
the revision exercises, in which
students themselves develop exercises with which they can revise language according to their
own needs. The seeds of the later
curriculum development – the
language portfolio – already exist
in the Scrapbook and Album in
En
English
G 2000. The book finds
its way to Romania and the
Czech Republic, where it is used
with success.
Arrival in the present –
English G 21
In the meantime, the next generation of English G has been published: English G 21. Here too,
the principle has remained the
same: keep tried and tested items
while introducing innovations.
The publishing house reacts in
particular to English teaching in
primary schools, the introduction of compulsory standards
of education and skills-based
teaching.
The skills-based approach of
English G 2000 is maintained
and expanded to include cooperative forms of learning.
Independent study is also given
more prominence than before.
Since the introduction of English
G Neue Ausgabe, the student’s
book has been complemented
by a wealth of supplementary
materials, which is continually
being added to.
From Peter Pim and Billy Ball to
English G 21 Cornelsen Verlag
can look back on over 60 years of
history. Many factors have contributed to our success. The
decisive factor is, however, the
combination of authors, editors, teachers and many others,
who work together to continue
the positive development which
began with Peter Pim and Billy
Ball.

the success of our English course
materials in your country, please

BACKGROUND
Many roads to succe
You know the saying, “All roads
lead to Rome”? We’d like to demonstrate that this isn’t only true
in the geographical sense, but
can just as easily be applied to
language learning and teaching.
There’s no patent recipe for
successfully teaching a foreign
language. One learner may
prefer learning in a group at a
fixed time and location, others
would rather learn more flexibly. Is it possible to offer such
heterogeneous learners just one
course which takes these needs,
and many others, into account?
Yes, it is! Cornelsen Publishing
offers access to the material in
its Short Course series in several
different ways, thus catering to a
multitude of learning styles and
preferences.
Traditional
Of course, many language learners favour the classroom as
4
their learning centre and are
mostly to be found in language
schools and in-company training courses. Our Short Course
coursebook series was developed
primarily for learners and trainers of Business English and English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
who work in groups.
The Short Course series is aimed
at CEF B1–B2 learners and provides them with the basic Business English skills which they
need for their work – be it telephoning, presenting, chairing
meetings, writing emails or negotiating terms and conditions.
However, managers and employees in international businesses
also need specialist vocabulary
and phrases appropriate to their
line of business. The Short Course
series provides material for trainers and learners in accounting,
the automobile industry, sales
and purchasing, marketing and
Cornelsen International Newsletter 1/2009
advertising, real estate, the energy industry and several more
specific professions. The coursebooks are compact, can be used
flexibly, and also function as a
handy workplace reference.
Armchair learning?
Other learners need to use their
time as flexibly and efficiently
as possibly and prefer to work
on their foreign-language ability and business skills whenever
they have the time and energy
to spare. They want visual input
and to experience the language
at first hand, which makes interactive video courses the ideal
choice.
Cornelsen Publishing has converted the skills taught in the
Short Courses into an innovative
DVD format. The interactive
lex:tra Business Video-DVDs don’t
stop at practice of grammar, vocabulary and idioms; they also
deal with culturally appropriate
behaviour and how to react in
specific situations. Learners can
work on their language skills
while relaxing in front of the
television or on the move with
a laptop or portable DVD Player. Each DVD is based on an
authentic storyline taken from
international business and contains five chapters which show
the story in the form of a feature film. The characters include Americans, Britons and nonnative speakers from all corners
of the world, enabling learners
to practise English as a lingua
franca in realistic situations. The
five interactive language courses
were filmed with experienced
actors and help learners gain
confidence in English for every
important business situation.
The interactive DVD components offer multiple-choice
quizzes, pronunciation exercises
and role plays, all of which can
BACKGROUND

be navigated by means of the
TV remote control. A compact
accompanying booklet provides
numerous exercises plus useful
expressions, transcripts and a
grammar overview.
Surfing skills
Digital media and the widespread
use of the internet mean greater
opportunities for language learning. Cornelsen Publishing also
offers Web-Based Training Modules based on its Short Courses.
Those who wish to improve their
English skills independently of
fixed course schedules, locations
and trainers can take advantage
of the pure e-learning courses.
Others may like the flexibility
of e-learning, but not wish to
forego the benefits of a course
tutor. Blended-learning courses
– e-learning plus face-to-face
training with a tutor – provide
the ideal solution. Companies
especially value the flexibility of
web-based training. Learners have access to the materials at any
time from any computer with
an internet connection and can
better integrate their learning
into their work schedule.
Six to eight online modules for
each short course have been produced, each complete in itself
and flexible in use. A variety of
exercises make for an enjoyable
learning experience and instant
feedback increases motivation.
Learners practise listening and
reading skills, vocabulary and
grammar, but there are also writing exercises. Learners are able
to check their own learning progress and there is a test module
for each subject area.
For blended-learning courses –
the combination of face-to-face
classes and web-based training
– there are supplementary te-
achers’ materials with ideas for
face-to-face classes which are
based on and integrate with the
online modules.
As you can see, learners nowadays can choose from a number
of methods of learning a foreign
language according to their personal interests and the flexibility
they require. When such factors
are taken into account, learner
motivation and success is assured!

PORTRAIT

Discover Berlin
Berlin is definitely worth a visit!
This isn’t just a recommendation
from the tourist industry – we
at Cornelsen have also learned
from experience that Berlin is a
popular destination for school
trips. These trips are not just
intended to strengthen group
feeling among class members or
to explore the city, however; they
are primarily intended to expand
and visualise aspects of history
and politics lessons.
When one considers the sheer
number of museums and sights
to see, it isn’t easy to decide where
to visit, particularly in view of
the fact that only a limited time
is usually available.
The new Cornelsen programme
“Klassenziel Berlin” (School trip:
Destination Berlin) not only
provides information on Berlin
tourist attractions and museums
but also assists teachers in the
planning and evaluation of the
trip.
In an interview with Cornelsen,
the initiator of the programme
Götz Schwarzrock, offered us a
brief introduction to “Klassenziel
Berlin”:
What motivated you to
develop the programme
“Klassenziel Berlin”?
On the one hand, of course, the
increasing attraction of Berlin as
a destination for class trips and
Stop
press!
6
excursions – almost half a million
young people visit Berlin each
year as part of a school outing.
Time and time again we hear
from teachers who are searching
amongst the flood of information
and seeking guidance in integrating their school trip with their
“normal” lessons.
Secondly, non-institutional education is playing an increasing
role in history and politics classes.
Preparation and follow-up work
linked to museum and memorial
site visits form a regular part of
the modern curriculum nowadays. It therefore seemed clear
that, as a large educational publisher in Berlin, Cornelsen could
provide an appropriate service to
teachers.
What sort of resonance have
you had from teachers and
school classes?
It’s difficult to say exactly how
many classes have used the materials since “Klassenziel Berlin”
was launched, but there are about
1000 downloads per month,
which shows that the programme
is popular and is being used.
How exactly do you support
teachers in planning their
Berlin visits and evaluating
them in class?
The online-portal currently presents 21 memorial sites and mu-
seums, whose collections have
historical or political significance.
In addition to an introduction to
a museum, there are also links to
their websites and selected links
with practical tips and information on other associated places
of interest. Specially-designed
downloadable materials tailored
to students either from years 6 to
10 or years 11 and 12 form the
core of the programme.
In contrast to materials offered
online by museums, our worksheets are based on the school
curriculum and place emphasis
on the relevance of the visit to
regular lessons. Each package
contains comments on methods
and approaches as well as
teacher’s and student’s material.
Because of heavy demand we are
now offering not only materials
on museums and monuments,
but also tours focussing on particular themes, such as a Berlin
Wall tour, a tour of political
Berlin, etc.
If you would like more information about “Klassenziel Berlin”,
which is free of charge, please contact us at klassenziel@cornelsen.de.
Further information can be
found on the Internet under
www.cornelsen.de/klz.
We are especially interested in
your opinion. How relevant is
a visit to Germany’s capital city
as a destination for school trips?
(Perhaps in connection with German foreign language lessons?)
How do your participants and
teachers prepare for such trips
and how are such school trips
exploited in class? Please send
your comments and suggestions

Oil in the 21st century
Oil resources are limited. The
result: oil prices keep soaring
to ever more dizzying heights.
But what are the real facts about
global oil resources? A question
which Hamburg oil expert Steffen Bukold answers in two volumes.
In the first volume he looks back
over the history of ‘black gold’
and discusses its geological and
technical aspects. He builds on
this by analysing the current
discourse on the extent of oil reserves and peak oil production.
He then deals with oil prices and
analyses the complex dealings on
the financial markets.
In the second volume Bukold introduces alternatives to crude oil,
which range from biomass fuel
through oil sands to synthetic
oil. The political strategies of the
most important oil-consumer
countries are also presented and,
finally, theories relating to future
oil policies are developed.
These books make for interesting
reading, not only for economists
and politicians, but also for anyone else who would like to better
understand the current discussion on rising oil prices and the
scarcity of natural resources.
