The Philip Allan Database gives you online access to copies of A Level Law, Biological Sciences Review, Business Review, Chemistry Review, Economic Review, Physics Review and Politics Review. Great way of keeping up-to-date with issues in these areas! How Do I Access the Philip Allan Database? To log in to these databases, you need your OPEN ATHENS password. You need to COME INTO THE LEARNING CENTRE to fill in a form for this password. It is important that you do this as soon as possible. Once you have your OpenAthens password, go to http://intolearningcentre.co.uk/ online-resources/ and click on the OpenAthens logo This will open the following screen: Use your OpenAthens Username and Password to log in. If you do not have a password, come into the Learning Centre and talk to the staff. 2 3 You will see a list of INTO Manchester databases. Simply click on the one you want to use. Once you open the Philip Allan database, you will then see the magazines that INTO Manchester currently has available to search: this includes A – Level Law Review, Biological Sciences Review, Business Review, Chemistry Review, Economic Review, Physics Review and Politics Review. Always ask if you get stuck! At the top of the screen is the search box 3 4 Add your search term here. In this example: House of Lords This opens the following screen where you have to choose key “filters” to narrow the search: Start with Subject – select which Subject area your search term belongs to– is it Business / Economics, Politics, Law or Science? Then, Choose Filter A list of results then appears. 4 5 If you have too many results, you can filter further by File Type, limiting your findings to resources such as Audio, Presentations or Revision Help. You can also search by a particular magazine, so only articles from Biological Sciences Review, Business Review, Chemistry Review, Economic Review, Physics Review, Politics Review or Law Review are selected. You can sort the list of results, click Collection, and change All title groups to Magazine Archive You can then Sort results by order of Best Match/ or Most recent: 5 6 Your results will appear in a list and you open any of the resources . Click on the icon on the left-hand side of each result to read the full text of the item. Once you have opened a resource, Click in bottom right-hand corner of screen — this will give you the option to Open in Full Screen view to make reading easier. For some resources, you click on the document and a ZOOM Bar will appear. You can then Zoom in to change the size of the section being viewed on screen, dragging the button to make the text larger or smaller. 6 7 Moving through the Magazine Use the arrows at the left - and right-hand page edges to move through your magazine. Clicking on the print button to show a print preview of what the article looks like. Right-click on the preview to bring up the print screen, select Print.
