Contractors Eurovia Infrastructure Services will start work on installing staggered puffin signal crossings on Rochford Road and Eastwoodbury Crescent to improve pedestrian safety and access at the Harp House Roundabout, which serves not only London Southend Airport but also the popular Airport Retail Park. At the same time, the existing crossings on Southend Road and Manners Way will also be upgraded to include improve pedestrian access, particularly for the elderly and impaired. The works will start with the installation of a traffic island on Eastwoodbury Crescent, associated crossing infrastructure, realignment of the pavement and upgrades to the street lights. The works to upgrade the existing crossings on Southend Road and Manners Way will take place at the same time. Similar activity will then take place on Rochford Road, followed by upgrades to two bus stops, to include the installation of larger shelters and real-time passenger information displays. The Council will be making every attempt to keep disruption to motorists, local residents and businesses to a minimum and will only plans to work outside peak hours, namely Mondays to Fridays between 9.30am and 3.30pm and between 8:00am and 16:00pm at weekends. Traffic on the approaches to the roundabout will need to be reduced to single lanes at times whilst this essential work takes place. MoreLife is a national scheme whereby children take part in fun sports of their choosing, and activities that boost self-esteem and confidence. There are also lessons about nutrition and cooking on a budget; including how to interpret food labels and the elements of a balanced meal. The idea is to highlight easy ways to keep the weight off by making small changes to diet - swapping to low sugar versions of favourite drinks, for example and by taking part in exercise that is enjoyable. Although MoreLife is about reducing obesity, children aren’t put under pressure by having their weight measured each week. There are before and after measurements of weight, waist size (as this is a marker for diabetes) and the children report how fit and well they feel. Since its inception in January 2015 over 130 families have been supported through MoreLife. One parent says of her experience: I was apprehensive at first as my son has profound autism. However, each child is supported as an individual and my son could take part in a way that suited him. “ Getting involved: ” It’s free of charge to take part in MoreLife and parents can self-refer. Referrals can also be made through school nurses, GPs and other health professionals. The next MoreLife course takes place at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre in April. To find out more, or register for the next course, contact Deborah Hart on 01702 212838 or email DeborahHart@Southend.gov.uk “ The group leads on what they want to do. So if they prefer football or dancing to badminton or Boxercise, we do more of those things ” Deborah Hart, MoreLife leader. T he Active Women Programme, delivered by Active Life, aims to increase participation in physical activity for women aged 22 and over. Since it began in 2014 the programme has not only improved health and fitness levels but has given local women the opportunity and much needed confidence boost to complete fitness qualifications and become volunteers to carry-on the fantastic work in their communities. Women are benefiting from free sessions such as zumba, aerobics, boxercise, pilates, yoga, bootcamp, fit steps and much more. Sessions are run throughout the week, across a choice of locations and venues in the town and at times to suit individuals and their lifestyles. There is also the opportunity for free training to enable women to become qualified to lead sessions, a key aspect of the project which will help sessions continue after the funded programme has completed. Jodie aged 36 from Southend: Jodie works full time and has found over the years that it is been difficult to find a regular exercise programme that she enjoyed. Jodie saw the adverts for Active Women sessions and the variety of session gave her an opportunity to try lots of different classes. Jodie soon became ‘hooked’ on the great classes and the friendly atmosphere. She started to volunteer at the classes and is also helping with the Running courses. Jodie has now completed her Exercise to Music qualification and is looking forward to delivering sessions in the coming months. Councillor Mary Betson, Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism & Economic Development, says: The impact of this popular fitness programme can literally be described as life changing for some of the ladies in Southend, either through weight loss and health improvements, to increased confidence and wellbeing. “ ” Your Essex Local Guide 54 Thorpe Bay 24p.indd 8 “ A particular focus of this project has been to remove barriers to exercise, so Active Life has worked really hard to ensure the sessions are informal, accessible and social, providing women with every opportunity to make friends and have fun. ” Sarah Potts, of Active Life Southend, says: We are overwhelmed by the success of this programme so far and the impact it has had to so many women’s lives. “ “ ” There is a real need to promote the importance of exercise in our communities and the benefits this can have on our health and wellbeing, which is exactly what this programme has done. The sessions are held at non-traditional venues and our friendly tutors are inspirational in encouraging women to take part, get active and enjoy being part of a fantastic programme. “ ” Active Life provide qualified female fitness staff offering Southend women lots of support, motivation and advice on taking part and how to maintain an active lifestyle. We look forward to welcoming many more women to this fantastic programme. ” “ The impact of this popular fitness programme can literally be described as life changing for some of the ladies ” For a full timetable and session details, please visit www.active-women.co.uk, telephone 01702 567327 or email info@activelife.uk.com Picture below: Jodie with other women taking part in the Active Women Programme. 24/02/2016 15:47 DOUBLE GLAZING 9 EUROPE’S MOST ADVANCED WINDOW SYSTEM A RATED AS STANDARD • NEW YALE BLADE LOCKING SYSTEM www.carterglass.co.uk email: guy@carterglass.co.uk phone: 01702 546 914 DOUBLE GLAZING REPAIRS advertorial Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Which? have now added themselves to the thousands of customers who recognise that, in Cloudy2Clear you are dealing with a business that you can really trust. Currently on tour in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang playing the Childcatcher, arguably one of the most iconic villains of all time, Martin is drawing on his previous roles for inspiration, but admits that there’s unchartered territory to explore when it comes to the character that regularly tops the polls of movie monsters. “ The Childcatcher is an exaggerated version of everything I have ever done before, but it comes from a completely different angle, explained Martin. He’s a step away from reality; all the characters are really, especially in the second half when we go to Vulgaria. ” ” “ “ In the first half I play a character called the Junk Man, but in the second half that kind of Alice in Wonderland thing happens and the Junk Man becomes the Childcatcher. Robert Helpmann did an amazing job, but my physicality is not the same as his; I don’t have his ballet background, so instead I try to bring a bit more horror to the role. ” Judging from the booing that fills the theatre before he has even set foot on the stage, he’s clearly doing that very effectively. “ Kids are scared of the name: Childcatcher. When the Baron says 'Call for the Childcatcher!' I can feel the tension in the theatre and then I hear the boos, he laughed, adding: But that’s part of the whole experience. If you haven’t laughed, cried and been scared then you haven’t seen a good show. You need to be taken to all those places. ” “ ” And with cheers at the curtain call almost taking the roof off the theatre, it seems that it’s a journey that audiences of all ages are delighted to undertake. A co-production between Music & Lyrics Limited and West Yorkshire Playhouse, this brand spanking new reimagining of the much-loved Sherman Brothers musical is winning critical acclaim as well as standing ovations. “ Ten years ago I saw the show in London and the main thing I remembered about it afterwards was the car, said Martin. But now it’s been changed and is much more about the whole story. It amazes me, but every night I walk out of stage door and people are there saying how much they loved the whole show. From old people who saw the movie on their first date to kids meeting Chitty for the very first time, the demographic is extraordinary. Yes, it’s changed from the book, and then again from the film and again from the original stage musical, but it really works. We’re sending people home with big smiles on their faces. ” “ ” As for his fellow cast members, mention them and it is Martin with a big smile on his face. “ ” “ It’s a great cast, he enthused. I’ve worked with Michelle [Collins] before and it’s lovely to work with her again, but they are all brilliant performers. Picture right: Martin Kemp as the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Photograph by Alastair Muir Your Essex Local Guide 54 Thorpe Bay 24p.indd 14 ” And so they are. Funny men Jason Manford as Caractacus Potts and Phill Jupitus as Lord Scrumptious and Baron Bomburst are joined by Martin and Michelle, as well as Andy Hockley of Phantom of the Opera fame as Grandpa Potts, 24/02/2016 15:48 CELEBRITY INTERVIEW and West End leading lady Amy Griffiths at Truly Scrumptious. Add to that a world class company of singers and dancers and you have a show that is dazzling, star-studded and that absolutely lives up to the ‘fantasmagorical’ praise. But while the story of Chitty might have been knocking around for a good while, musical theatre is a new challenge for Martin “ One reason I am here is that I have never done a musical before and I thought this might be a nice way to dip my toe in. I love trying new things and I love working with new people. ” That happy-go-lucky, have-a-go attitude wasn’t always there, however. In fact, as a child he confesses that he struggled with crippling shyness. “ I’ve been doing this a while now but at the age of eight I was incredibly shy, so my mum sent me to Anna Scher’s drama workshops, said Martin, who knows first-hand what an advantage drama classes can be to children. ” “ What drama clubs give you is a small amount of this magic dust called charisma. I always say that I owe everything to Anna Scher because she formed my personality as a kid. ” Pointing out that whether you become an actor or join a band or you just use that acquired confidence to get through interviews when you’re 16, Martin is certain that drama clubs are a fantastic way of developing both character and life skills. As for children watching live theatre, absorbing stories close up rather than on a screen, Martin loves the way they get totally involved. “ Adults watch, but kids believe and become part of the world they see unfolding; they just dive in, he nodded. ” arenas the size of Wembley you know that to people at the back you’re just a speck of dust in the distance and that you’ll never get to meet those people. So in May I am doing the sort of antidote to not meeting people with a show that’s going to tour called An Audience with Martin Kemp. I’ll be travelling around England chatting about my life and career and taking questions from the audience. Yeah, it’s going to be different and fun, he grinned. ” Talking of travel, Southend is a place that Martin has enjoyed visiting before. I am really looking forward to going back as the Childcatcher in Chitty, he said. “ ” With such a busy professional life relaxation, he says, comes in the form of painting. “ 15 “ I love trying new things and I love working with new people ” That’s my down time. Sometimes it shuts me off from the world and I lose myself completely. ” Asked what he paints and the smile that stole my sixteen-year-old heart lights up his face again. I paint rock ‘n’ roll, he says with a chuckle. “ ” Super-talented, funny, warm and with rock ‘n’ roll artistic flair to boot, however brilliantly nasty he is as the Childcatcher, in real life Martin Kemp is a total sweetie. W “ ith less than 3 months to go until the Police and Crime Commissioner and Borough Council elections, the council is urging all local residents to make sure that they are registered to vote. As we approach the May 2016 elections it is vital that as many people as possible are registered to vote so they can have their say on issues that affect their lives. Every individual is now responsible for ensuring they are on the electoral register, rather than still being the responsibility of the ‘head of household’. It is quick and easy to register online and only takes a few minutes. The system changed in 2014 and if you are in any doubt as to whether you are registered, please call the team on 01702 215010. Registering to vote is simple and can be done online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. The deadline to register to vote in the May 2016 Police and Crime Commissioner and Borough Council elections is Monday 18th April. Rob Tinlin, Chief Executive of the Council says: “ ” ” Being registered means that you can vote in relevant elections and it could also help you to gain credit. Streetlighting contractors replaced the street lights between Kent Elms and Cuckoo Corner roundabout last month. The work is part of the Council’s £13.5m programme to replace all street lighting in the Borough. Not only are LED lamps more energy efficient, but they will also drastically reduce energy and ongoing maintenance costs, meaning that the Council can keep streets lit at night. The remaining section of the A127 between the Borough boundary and Kent Elms will be upgraded to LEDs before the end of March. In November 2014, the Council started replacing the Borough’s 14,000 street lanterns across its entire estate. But last year, the Council announced that the £13.5m project would be delivered faster thanks to the Council securing £5.1m central Government funding and agreeing a further £8.2m bespoke financial arrangement with the Green Investment Bank. The project was also extended to include all illuminated street furniture, such as lit signs, and replacing or refurbishing ageing street lighting columns. A new central management system (CMS) will also allow the Council to remotely manage its lanterns across the borough. “ Bringing this popular project forward is a win-win situation ” Cllr Martin Terry, Executive Member for Public Protection, Waste & Transport The new low-energy streetlights will more than pay for themselves within their lifetime through energy savings while generating carbon savings for the Borough. The LEDs can also provide 100,000 hours of light, compared with just 15,000 hours for standard bulbs. During the ceremony, which took place at Milton Hall Primary School in Westcliffeon-Sea, the cadets were put through their paces and recognised for their hard work and achievements. The young people, all aged between 13 to 17 years old, marched in front of a crowd of proud family and friends, as well as guests including Deputy Chief Constable Matthew Horne and Chief Superintendent Luke Collison who praised the cadet’s valuable contributions. Volunteer Police Cadet Leader Pc James Howell said: “I couldn’t be prouder to see our thirty seven cadets from different backgrounds pass out in front of their friends, family and special guests. Tonight has been amazing for me and I know the kids have enjoyed it.” “So far the cadets have been involved in a number of volunteering opportunities; doing gardening for local residents, visiting elderly people’s homes and undertaking volunteer work at schools. In the coming months, there will be many more opportunities for them to get involved in police operations.” Chief Superintendent Luke Collison added: “I am delighted to see thirty seven cadets looking so smart and proud with their parents. Over the coming weeks and months, the cadets will go out into the community to carry out crime prevention and reassurance initiatives with officers, the special constabulary and local partners.” “This is a first for Southend and seeing cadets on the streets helping to keep local communities safe makes me very proud as their LPA Commander.” OPTICIANS NHS HOME VISITING OPTICIANS Why Go To The High Street Opticians When The Opticians Can Come To You?
