CORE DISTRIBUTIVE STUDIES: PSYC 100 (Introductory Psychology) is an introductory CORE course in psychology designed to acquaint the student with the concepts, findings and approaches used by psychologists to provide explanations of human behavioral and mental phenomena. You have chosen this course as part of your CORE Liberal Arts and Sciences Studies Program, the general education portion of your degree program. CORE Distributive Studies courses are designed to ensure that you will take a look at several different academic disciplines and the way they create and analyze knowledge about the world. A faculty and student committee approved this CORE Distributive Studies course because it will introduce you to ideas and issues that are central to a major intellectual discipline and because it promises to involve you actively in the learning process. Please take advantage of the opportunities this course offers you. COURSE GOALS: Psychology 100 is an introductory psychology course designed to acquaint the student with the basic approaches, methods and findings in psychology. A wide range of topics is incorporated into the course including the historical underpinnings of the field, biological basis of behavior, motivation, learning, sensation and perception, cognitive processes, speech and language, social behavior, developmental psychology, individual differences and the nature of and treatment of major mental disorders. GRADING PROCEDURES: Grades for PSYC 100 will be based on three examinations during the course of the semester and one final paper associated with class discussions. The three examinations will be worth 50 points each and the final paper submitted by the end of the semester (see Course Menu at left) will be worth 20 points. The topic for the paper and a rubric is provided (see the Assignments link on the Course Menu). A total of 170 points is possible in the course. Letter grades will be assigned on the basis of the following schedule although plus and minus grades will be assigned at the margins. A total of 165 points is required to receive an A+. Psychology 100 -2- Summer 2013 TOTAL NUMBER OF POINTS: 150 - 170 130 - 149 110 - 129 90 - 109 Below 90 LETTER: A B C D F GRADE OF INCOMPLETE: The grade of "I" is an unusual grade at the University of Maryland and is only assigned at the discretion of the instructor and in special cases. The following conditions must be met: 1. MOST of the course work must be completed at the time an "I" is requested. Students who have seldom attended class nor completed most of the coursework are not eligible for this grade. 2. SATISFACTORY performance in course work at the time of the request is required. Students not performing at the level of "C" or better (see grade schedule on previous page) are not considered eligible for a grade of "I". 3. An INCOMPLETE CONTRACT must be signed by both the student and the instructor. This contract will set a date at which time the work must be completed and specify the remaining assignments. If this contract is not fulfilled (i.e. if the student does not complete the assignments on schedule) a grade of "F" will be assigned in the course. 4. Students must present compelling and strong evidence that an incomplete grade is warranted. Medical evidence must be documented and endorsed by appropriate physicians or medical professionals in writing. If the student's request is based on nonmedical reasons, the student must petition the instructor in writing for the grade of "I" stating clearly the reasons for the request. RETAKES: There are NO retakes of the examinations. Once you take an exam, the results (i.e. the grades) are final! PSYC100 SURVEY: The University requests that you participate in two surveys, at the beginning and at the end of this course. You will receive 2 course points for each survey you participate in (maximum of 4 extra points for both surveys). MAKE-UP EXAMS: Students requesting a make-up for an examination must petition the instructor in writing, provide written documentation of medical excuses and clear explanations of nonmedical problems. The final decision in these cases rests exclusively with the instructor. Psychology 100 -3- Summer 2013 ACADEMIC ACCOMODATIONS: If you have a documented disability, you should contact Disability Support Services 0126 Shoemaker Hall. Each semester students with documented disabilities should apply to DSS for accommodation request forms which you can provide to the instructor as proof of your eligibility for accommodations. The rules for eligibility and the types of accommodations a student may request can be reviewed on the DSS web site at http://www.counseling.umd.edu/DSS/receiving_serv.html. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: The University of Maryland, College Park has a nationally recognized Code of Academic Integrity, administered by the Student Honor Council. This Code sets standards for academic integrity at Maryland for all undergraduate and graduate students. As a student you are responsible for upholding these standards for this course. It is very important for you to be aware of the consequences of cheating, fabrication, facilitation, and plagiarism.
