OVERVIEW
The SBTDC is a business development service of the University of North Carolina
system operated in partnership with the US Small Business Administration. The
SBTDC provides management counseling and educational services to help North
Carolina small businesses meet challenges, manage change, and plan for the future.
The SBTDC supports the growth and development of North Carolina's economy by
encouraging entrepreneurship, assisting in the creation and expansion of small to
medium-sized enterprises and facilitating technology development and
commercialization. The SBTDC maintains offices across the state, each affiliated
with a NC university.
PROGRAMS
1) Technology Development Counseling
The SBTDC's Technology Commercialization program provides services to technology
businesses to assist their commercialization of new technologies. Assistance includes
facilitating access to research and development funding, business plan development
guidance, strategic planning and commercialization strategy assistance. SBTDC
Technology Specialists also help clients access venture and angel funding. The
SBTDC's Technology Group has a staff of Technology Commercialization Specialists
and an SBIR/STTR Program Specialist who provide statewide assistance. Email
technology@sbtdc.org to be connected with a specialist.
2) SBIR/STTR Counseling
The SBTDC provides support to small R&D firms interested in applying for the federal
SBIR and STTR programs. This group assists with identifying an appropriate agency
and technical topic for submission, proposal preparation and writing, review of
proposals prior to submission, and identifying Phase III commercialization
opportunities.
3) Business Counseling
The SBTDC also offers general business counseling dealing with such topics as
assessing the feasibility of a business idea, preparing a business plan, identifying
sources of capital, developing marketing strategies, and managing the operations
and human resources.
4) SBIR/STTR Conferences/Workshops
In an effort to educate small R&D firms about the SBIR and STTR programs and the
opportunities they present, the SBTDC offers several special training events
throughout the year. Typically, two large conferences are held annually and regional
workshops are offered at various locations around the state. The content offered
