In accordance with the CLC Master Plan, the construction of many of the current and future capital works projects would not be possible, if it were not for the range of income sources available to College Council: •State and Australian Government grants; •Local government infrastructure grants; •Bank loans; •Concordia College Foundation Building funds; •Income generated through the lease of College facilities; and •Donations and bequests. CONCORDIA FUNCTION CENTRE Norfolk Room Bunya Room Our newest facility, the Concordia Function Centre, will be available for both internal and external bookings. In an effort to commemorate our old House names, we have created the Bunya, Norfolk and Noack Rooms, as well as the Redlands Boardroom. Enquiries and bookings can be made by contacting Redlands Campus Reception. The Bunya Room Ballon Outdoor Education Centre The relocated building from Redlands Campus is now ready for use as a new Dining and Activity centre. This development along with other recent refurbishments is part of our master planning and marketing strategy for the centre. Other recent improvements include new bunk beds and mattresses as well as modernised bathroom amenities for each dorm. Redlands Boardroom Noack Room 2 Concordia Connections Centre for Scientific Inquiry In early January, our building contractors, G & K Lawson Construction Pty Ltd, took possession of the Redlands Campus site with Practical Completion due in June 2013. Staff and students are now looking forward to lessons in the new centre from the beginning of Semester 2. Once equipment and resources have been moved into the new building, the five old science laboratories will be gutted in preparation for the next stage of our capital works program. Hospitality Centre and Learning Support/ ESL Rooms As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) offering Certificate I and II in Hospitality Practices, a popular elective within our Senior Curriculum offering, we are required to meet and maintain particular industry standards, including the provision of a fully equipped commercial kitchen. Naturally, not only will the construction of such a new facility benefit our students in Years 11 and 12, but it will also serve as the venue for Middle College students currently studying the elective subject area of Food Studies. The new Hospitality Centre will be created within the two downstairs rooms of the old science block and will include a fully operational commercial kitchen and dining room. This facility will also benefit the wider College community as a venue for a variety of functions and cater to the needs of our boarding students when our new May 2013 Function Centre is unavailable. The remaining three upstairs rooms of the old science block will be converted into flexible learning spaces, storage, tutorial and staff rooms to provide a Centre of Learning for students requiring additional learning or English language support. This new centre will be connected with D-Block and the existing Year 7 and 8 classrooms through an extension of the existing ramp, which will join S-Block upstairs. Assuming everything goes to plan, it is our intention to timetable classes in the new Hospitality and Learning Centre from the beginning of 2014. I am sure you will agree that our students will benefit greatly through the provision of current capital works projects. We recognise and acknowledge the tremendous work of Council, the Executive Team and staff of the College, who together had the foresight and enthusiasm to prepare our Concordia Lutheran College Master Plan for the future and now to make it a reality. Michael Kaiser Head of College Find us on Facebook 3 College News Three Into One Does Go – Changing the Brand Change within schools can be challenging at the best of times. Change that involves an amalgamation of two primary schools and one secondary college in three locations across Toowoomba, into a coeducational K-12 College is positively daunting. Throw into the mix two boarding houses, an Outdoor Education Centre three hours away and the transition of Year Seven students from the primary to the secondary campus and we’re talking about a really complex project! In 2007 the result was Concordia Lutheran College, Toowoomba with Michael Kaiser as the inaugural Head of College. A supportive Queensland District Church body, proactive local College Council, enthusiastic and forward- thinking staff, parents and students were key to the amalgamation’s success. Education in Toowoomba is a big ticket item and a recognisable brand is vital to market share. Many changes were in the wind. Previous campus names and three different crests, the oldest notching up 60 years were laid to rest as new branding became a necessity. It’s important to preserve elements of our past for current families and past students and this needed to be done sensitively. A bright and fresh new College crest was created. It is redolent with symbolism of the trinity, a firm foundation, raggedy edges, the ‘One Heart’ motto and even a map of Queensland thrown in for good measure! The new crest was just the beginning of a new look. We soon realised that there was a need to roll out a philosophy statement, strategic plan, management structure, college song, website, prospectus and new branding in ads, publications, staff and student uniforms, signage and merchandise. We also had the opportunity to harness K-12 human resources through streamlined curriculum, restorative practices and pastoral care programs, engage non-teaching staff more effectively and utilise physical and financial resources more wisely. And as much as our Head of College would like to take a turn on the tractor, he’s not allowed! 4 Past students who visit our College say that it’s not like it used to be. No it’s not and neither should it be. You’re not the same either. Three into one does go. We did it - With One Heart. Chaseley Lamerton Director of Marketing and Enrolments Interpreting Our College Crest The Concordia Lutheran College Crest has been designed to reflect the traditional foundations of Martin Luther Primary School, Concordia Primary School and Concordia College. It embodies the idea that our campuses are built on solid educational and theological foundations. The triangular shape represents the Trinity and the three campuses. It also reminds us of our geographic location. Swirls coming down reflect God’s grace and those rising represent the Holy Spirit, growth and development. As our eye is drawn towards the cross within the heart, we are reminded that the centrality of the Gospel underpins our Christian teaching. The rough side of the triangle is a reminder that everything in life is not smooth and easy. Within God’s love we learn to develop Christian character. See Page 23 Concordia Connections Head of Senior College As a new member of Concordia Lutheran College I have enjoyed the sense of community which has resonated in all that I have been involved with so far. At various assemblies, I have challenged students to always do their best and to be fully involved in College life. A number of cocurricular activities are up and running. Our recent production of Godspell was a resounding success. I have been an educator for over 25 years and mostly been involved in the establishment of new schools. Early in my career I was involved in the development of the All Saints Anglican School on the Gold Coast. I then took up the position of Head of Campus at Lindisfarne Anglican College in Terranora during the development of the Secondary Section of the School and returned as Acting Principal after teaching for three years at the Regents International School, Thailand. I was the Head of Junior Secondary at Coomera Anglican School, before continuing my International experience as Head of ICT at the Australian International School, Singapore. Recently, I have held a number of administrative positions including Head of Uptown School and Head of Secondary at Greenfield Community School, both in Dubai. After these travels it is satisfying to return to my home patch. I acknowledge the history and traditions of Concordia and appreciate the role that the Past Students’ Association plays. I wish you well in your endeavours this year. Tony Sharman Head of Senior College May 2013 Save 1, 2, 3 November! Just bring your umbrella and a smile.” (Heritage Weekend email Update No. 6) And they did! Hundreds of students, past and present, staff and family members braced the cold and rather damp conditions to come out and join the celebrations of the Concordia community Heritage Weekend. and indigenous students were proud to be able to provide a showcase of cultural significance allowing visitors to realise the breadth of our ethnic heritage within the Concordia community. Members of the class of the 1950s pored over every aspect of the archival display which gave visitors a window back into time. In between displays visitors were pleased to find a moment of respite whilst thoroughly enjoying an array of musical presentations as provided by our very talented students from Prep to Year 12. Apart from the Fabulous Fifties Luncheon, Celebration Dinner and Service, the highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the Celebration under the Trees. Weeks of planning and preparation resulted in a visual feast of artistic, curricular, multi-cultural and historic displays. Sideshow Alley and the Aquathon provided hours of entertainment. There was truly something for everyone. One thing is for sure, despite the inclement weather, there was not a frown to be found – with nothing but smiles all round. There is no doubt that this truly is a College With One Heart. Thank you Team! Parents eagerly examined the work of their children as displayed in the gym (Junior College) and classrooms (Senior College) around Redlands Campus. Our international Michael Kaiser Head of College 6 I now invite you to read on for a wrap-up of all things ‘Heritage’. Concordia Connections Fabulous Fifties Lunch What’s fast becoming a tradition of the Heritage Weekend is the opportunity for students from Concordia’s earlier years to be treated to College hospitality with a special lunch at the invitation of Head of College Michael Kaiser. Redlands Campus hosted eighty past students and guests from the 1950s from far afield yet bound by shared memories of their old school days. Greetings from those absent were read. Stories rolled, photos were shared and laughter grew as this special group reunited after half a century. Michael Kaiser welcomed our Fabulous Fifties and explained how the Past Students’ Association was endeavouring to re-establish contact with as many as possible. He stressed the importance of preserving Heritage and the value of gatherings like this one. Jaryu Shaw (Year 9) and Jenyu Shaw (Year 11) who blitzed the field in the Eisteddfod, especially piano, provided music for the soul and the Redlands Campus Catering team, delicious Chicken Mignon and Apple Crumble Tartlets for the body. Past student Rev John Vitale said grace. Guest speaker, past student Richard Pietsch is well known from the paddocks of Inglewood to the Brisbane Boardroom of RACQ. As past Concordia parent and past Council Chair, Richard’s passion for Lutheran education was evident in his speech. Equally so he urged us to “eat more farm food and wear more wool” especially in this Year of the Farmer. Through boarding, Concordia provides the perfect opportunity for country and city to meet. We look forward to building on this friendship and committing many stories from the 1950s to the archives. It’s just possible that the 2012 class photo might sneak its way onto many a mantle piece. Chaseley Lamerton Director of Marketing and Enrolments May 2013 7 College News Heritage Weekend 2-3 June 2012 And Celebrate They Did! If the sheer exuberance of the dinner guests is anything to go by, then the Heritage Weekend Celebration Dinner lived up to its name. 130 guests, many from interstate swapped the wet conditions for the warmth of friendship and good company. Savouries served by Concordia boarders were served to guests as Contemporary Choral created the ambience for a classy evening. Past student Richard Hauser (1964) the evening’s MC almost needed no introduction by Head of College Michael Kaiser, such is his profile amongst Lutheran educators and authors. Richard carefully selected his ‘targets’ for spot interviews which added to the enjoyment of the evening. Chef Tyrone Lanagan and his team prepared Chicken Mediterranean and Tender Beef Mignons, which was followed by Strawberry Bavois and Chocolate Praline Cones, a far cry from boarder fare of old. Guest speaker, past student Jill Lange-Mohr (Lange, 1976) currently holds the position of Principal of St Peter’s College Springfield. She entertained us with her recollections of time at Concordia Memorial College during the 1970s with some very accurate character sketches of O.J. Janetzki, Pastor Glen Zweck, Elva Paech, John Penny, Glen Natalier and Don Williams. Jill is unashamedly a Concordia girl through and through but those hundreds of detention lines of Rule 9 will always have a special place in her heart! In a guest spot interview, Executive Director of Lutheran Education Australia Stephen Rudolph reminded us to “be true to who we are” and that it is often through our Colleges that the gospel is brought to our students. “After all,” he continued “Lutherans have been educating young people for 173 years”. He also brought special greetings from Pastor Mike Semmler, President of the Lutheran Church of Australia. Many past students took this as an opportunity 8 to hold class reunions. Large groups from 30 and 50 years ago enjoyed catching up with their class mates of old. “It’s amazing how old some have become” one wit was heard to remark! The Past Students’ Association will benefit from the lively multi draws throughout the evening which kept everyone buzzing. Further musical entertainment was provided by Greg Kowald and past student Ian Kammholz (1978) accompanied by Wendy Evans, Head of the Arts. Andrew Kucks (1984) PSA President and Syd Owen, Heritage Weekend Chair delivered votes of thanks to speakers and expressed their appreciation to everyone for their support of the College and their attendance at the dinner. Chaseley Lamerton Director of Marketing and Enrolments Stephen Rudolph, Jill Lange-Mohr and Richard Hauser Concordia Connections Heritage Celebration Service – Take it! Enjoy it! Live it! A reflection of what Heritage can mean to us was the focus of the Sunday Celebration Service which capped off a very successful Heritage Weekend. Emmanuel Lutheran Fellowship and Concordia Lutheran College combined to celebrate Trinity Sunday with guests from communities near and far, which included past students from the 1950s. Rev Andrew Vanderwal (Emmanuel Lutheran Fellowship), Rev Mark Vainikka (Concordia Lutheran College) and Rev John Vitale (1950s student and District President Emeritus) led us in worship, a combination of contemporary and traditional. Boarders Hayley Parker (St George) and Ralph Trappe (Lae), read the Bible lessons, and Lois Sanders, Marie Miegel and ELF members provided music. A pictorial representation of Concordia through the ages set the scene for a Heritage theme. Like mottos and badges, things have changed in 66 years including the College song. Past students led us in the new College song, With One Heart written by past student Sharny Russell Van Herp (1972). May 2013 Rev John Vitale in his address explored various meanings of Heritage. Is it inheritance of property and heirlooms? Is it genetic? For him it is the battered foolscap pad which documents his Finnish grandfather’s story. An important legacy that we as parents can give to our children is education. Concordia provided that for John Vitale a boarder from Ingham, as his Christian faith grew and his knowledge increased. For Christians our Gospel Heritage becomes most significant, especially as we celebrate the Triune God on Trinity Sunday. “True Heritage must be handed on. Take it! Enjoy it! Live it! With one heart we forge our futures, and more so with one heart we go with God and the Gospel to forge our futures.” Greetings were brought by Head of College Michael Kaiser who acknowledged the presence of the 1950s students. A morning tea in the Dining Room was enjoyed by many as Heritage Weekend 2012 came to a close. Look out 1960s students – it’s your turn in 2013! Chaseley Lamerton Director of Marketing and Enrolments 9 College News CLC College Council Back L-R: Michelle Toombs, Syd Owen, Scott Maroske (consultant), Jeff Ballon, Tania Bahnisch. Front L-R: Robert Craig (Consultant), Boyd Busiko, Gavin Lindenmayer, Michael Janetzki. (Absent: Michael Kaiser) The membership of Concordia Lutheran Council is approved by the Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District and we report annually to Synod. We currently have seven members who at one time or another have been or will be past students or past, present or future parents of the College. We use our range of talents and experience in the areas of accounting and finance; legal; education and business management in the key role of Corporate Governance. It is our responsibility to ensure that the school operates in accordance with the objectives, policies and procedures set by the Lutheran Church. Our involvement is in long term Strategic matters, concerned with aims, priorities and future developments of the College. Activities such as these shape the overall ethos and purpose of the school. Our other key role is to provide support and encouragement to the Head of College and the Executive Team in their daily operational activities. To assist in carrying out our functions, we 10 have four sub-committees – Finance and Asset Management; Legal Audit and Risk; P&F Management and Strategy and Planning. These sub committees that meet regularly gather information and provide advice to help the Council in its monitoring function. At the start of 2012 we all agreed that it would be worthwhile to gain a better insight into the Strategic Planning Process, given that our current Five Year Plan was concluding at the end of 2012. For some Council members, 2012 was their first year of Council membership and to assist them we joined with Michael Kaiser and members of his Executive Team in a series of workshops facilitated by Independent Schools Queensland. Much discussion took place in what defines the College, where we need to be in the next five years and how this will be achieved. Our learning as Council members is never ending and we have committed to engage in continual professional development to carry out our Governance role. Our Capital Projects have included the long awaited refurbishment to the pool in to what Concordia Connections Centre for Scientific Inquiry is now a very impressive Aquatic Centre. Government funding via the Block Grant Authority has been secured for the construction of the new Centre for Scientific Inquiry with construction almost completed. This in turn, will result in the refurbishment of the old Science building. Planning is also underway for other Capital Works as part of our long term Capital Master Plan. To mention briefly, there are plans to renovate the lower floor of Girls’ Boarding and to provide a new Administration Centre and additional classrooms for Concordia Primary Campus as well as on-going upgrades at Martin Luther Primary Campus. The Dining Room at our Ballon Outdoor Education Centre has been completed. We all have so much to be thankful for in what our Lord provides for us. The success of our College is due to a whole gamut of things. The Council is grateful to have such May 2013 loyal and dedicated teaching staff providing a high standard of education for each student. Also, to the Business Office and support staff for their strong business management and meticulous record keeping, and the Grounds staff for the maintenance of buildings and amenities, ovals and gardens. We thank the catering staff for their hospitality to students, the Council, visitors and guests. The support of families to our College is overwhelming. There are many parents who, given their own busy schedules, still find time to assist around the campuses by being part of P&F committees and attending functions. Thanks to our students who in their own unique ways contribute to College life in academic, sporting, cultural pursuits or just simply being a friend to a fellow student in a time of need. We are fortunate to be members of the Lutheran Church of Australia, Queensland District which through the Secretariat of Lutheran Education Queensland aims to nurture, strengthen, guide and uplift those people working in our Lutheran Colleges and early childhood centres so they are equipped to better carry out their ministry of service. I’d encourage all of you to continue supporting these bodies now and in the future. Gavin Lindenmayer Concordia Lutheran College Council Chair 11 College News Aquatic Centre Launch Sports Captains Sara Croft and Jake Norley with special guests Michael Bohl and Stephanie Rice. Everyone gathered within Concordia’s newly refurbished Aquatic Centre on 12 October 2012, to experience not only the welcoming atmosphere but also the radiant smile of our Olympic Gold Medalist, Stephanie Rice, who along with coach Michael Bohl were honoured guests on this special occasion. This significant event actually marked the third opening of a swimming pool complex since 1946. The original, and then outdoor pool, was built on the same site in 1975. Ten years later, on 11 November 1986, the opening of the new indoor heated swimming pool of nine lanes took place. Apart from regular maintenance, the pool had seen little change in the last 25 years. The facility we see today has undergone a major refurbishment which includes a complete fibre-glass relining, new starting blocks, windows, ceiling and pool decking. Change rooms have also been refitted and tiled and the entire building has been repainted. The official opening ceremony and the traditional ribbon cutting by Stephanie Rice also marked the beginning of the 12 Hour Lap Swim in celebration of this milestone in the history of our College. 12 The weekend of 19–20 April saw this year’s College Musical production of “Godspell” performed to very appreciative and enthusiastic audiences. Congratulations to the cast, including students from all three campuses, for their outstanding work over the last three months to put the show together. You’all come back now! 16 Concordia Connections Past students promoting healthy bodies After graduating from Concordia College, James Wiltshire (1999) was lucky enough to gain entry into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy at UQ. This was obviously a life-changing event but became even more so when he met his lovely wife Jill at the start of his third year of study. They married in their fourth year and moved to Tasmania in their first year out of Uni. Fantastic! Circumstances dictated a return to Queensland. James gained work around the northern suburbs of Brisbane. He was fortunate enough during this time to juggle having two beautiful girls, work full-time, do physio for a Premier Brisbane Rugby club and renovate a house (busy times indeed). After six years of this, the family moved to Warwick where Jill was employed as a Psychologist. They have since come full circle and started a practice in Toowoomba in 2009. This has been challenging and rewarding in equal measure. To keep life full James has returned to Uni to complete a Masters of Sports Physiotherapy and a Masters of Manipulative Physiotherapy (spinal). Life is full and fantastic at the moment and they love living and working in this beautiful town and catching up with former Concordian friends. May 2013 When Renea Davies (1995) left Concordia she continued her sporting interests and studied Health Science at Griffith University. This began her career in rehabilitation for several A-Grade AFL, Soccer and League teams on the Gold Coast. Looking for something more she studied Podiatry at QUT. Renea found essential experiences in Singapore and Queensland before returning home and opening her own clinic. Now Renea owns and operates Think Feet Podiatry in Toowoomba. While she treats “all things Podiatry” she specialises in children’s growing issues and realigning the foot posture in adults. The foot changes are made with specially developed Foot Mobilisation Techniques (FMT), coupled with corrective exercises tailored for each patient. This is all done without orthotics and surgery. Renea very generously gave her time last August at the annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival to become a member of the sports medicine team. She manipulated and realigned dislocated bones of injured athletes. Concordia Connections Obituaries Harold Mengel Vince Klingberg 1 August 1931 – 18 September 2012 25 October 1929 - 16 November 2012 The Concordia community mourns the loss of Harold Mengel, an original 1946 student who gave over 60 years of service to the Lutheran Church. Harold enjoyed his academic and sporting days at the fledgling College and was confirmed by Pastor R.H. Altus in 1946. After leaving school, Harold contracted Poliomyelitis and was treated by Sister Elizabeth Kenny, who came from his home town of Nobby. Despite this setback Harold enjoyed physical labour and lived a full and active working life in his community with membership of many organisations. Harold’s connection with Concordia Lutheran College spans the College’s entire history and his children and grandchildren continue to be members of the College family as staff, parents and student. Harold took a keen and lively interest in all things Concordia and in his latter years particularly, enjoyed catching up with old classmates from the 1940s. Rev Mark Vainikka conducted Harold’s funeral service at Holy Trinity Church, Nobby on 26 September where grandson Carl Christensen read the Eulogy. The Concordia Lutheran College community is saddened by the loss of long-serving teacher and valued colleague Vince Klingberg, who died on 16 November. Vince became very much a part of Concordia’s fabric through a distinguished time of service from 1959 to 1994, an amazing 36 years! Many subjects were taught during Vince’s working life at Concordia, though Maths and Science were his favourites. QED – “quite easily done” he would say! He had many strings to his bow including timetabling, Book Agent, Board of Secondary School Studies coordinator and sports master. Thousands of old Concordians will remember the “Golden Voice” behind the microphone from those sports days. Vince kept up an active interest in College activities particularly Heritage Weekends, until very recent times. Our sympathies are extended to Vince’s wife Roma, their six children and their families. Dianne, John, David, Sandra, Karen and Terry were all educated at Concordia Primary School and Concordia College. Vince’s funeral was conducted by Rev Brenton Fiedler at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Friday 23 November. May the smile of God be for you And his breath give you life. Concordia Connections Alumni News A Very Special Visitor Redlands Campus has had the pleasure of welcoming back one of our former students. Hardly unusual, I hear you say! Indeed, we regularly enjoy catching-up with old scholars who are always very excited to share details of life’s journey since leaving Concordia. Doris Waidelich, her son Markus and niece Yvonne Titter (nee Krenske), who also attended CMC, enjoyed a wonderful walk down memory lane with a tour of Redlands Campus, followed by a delicious morning tea in the old Redlands building. What made our time together so much more significant, apart from the fact that Doris had travelled all the way from Vancouver, Canada where she now lives, was the fact that Doris is one of our foundation students and member of the class of 1946. To top things off, Doris was born a Noack, the youngest daughter of Pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Noack, who was the College’s Council Chair for 24 years from 1944 to 1968. In this capacity, Pastor Noack was able to persuade Council members to purchase the Redlands building and surrounding lands for approximately £5000. If it hadn’t been for his foresight and the ability to lead a strong team of like-minded farmers and businessmen to establish a Markus Waidelich, Doris Waidelich and Yvonne Titter with Michael Kaiser Lutheran College on the Downs, perhaps we wouldn’t be here today. As a member of the founding class, Doris was able to share many stories of those early days, when there were only 27 students, most of whom were boarders. At that time the boys of College boarded upstairs in the Redlands building. After attending church on Sunday with Emmanuel Lutheran Fellowship and our boarding community in the College Chapel, Doris departed knowing that she still has a strong connection with her alma mata. May 2013 21 Alumni News Greetings from Canada Prior to the Heritage Weekend celebrations, Ellen White (Orava, 1954-1955) sent greetings from Vancouver. An excerpt follows: This little Finnish girl who came from Tully the student who traveled the longest distance in years 1954-1955 - 2 days and 2 nights on two trains to attend Concordia. There were students in a higher grade, teachers, dorm mistress, who became role models for this lonely girl from a sugar cane farm, who had big dreams. Dreams of high education, of traveling, success in her career, and then in business with her husband - consultants to many small companies and large corporations, in Australia, Canada and USA and other countries and experiencing life by living in these nations. As you gather for the Heritage Weekend Celebration and for the Fabulous Fifties I HONOUR my Principal, The Teachers, The Kitchen Staff, Dorm Mistress, and my Fellow Students, and say “Thank You For Being Part Of My Life’s Journey”. I leave this scripture for EVERYONE and especially to the Current Staff and Students. “Dream big and be prepared to work as hard as your dream is big.” Psalm 37: 3-5 (NKJ) “Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.” Ellen White ellenwhite@telus.net Concordia Function Centre Past student reunions Weddings Christenings Parties Conferences Noack Room seats 14 | Norfolk Room seats 80 Bunya Room seats 140 Catering supplied Phone 07 4688 2700 or email enquiries@concordia.qld.edu.au for menus and pricing details. WITH ONE HEART WE BUILD MANY STRENGTHS Redlands Campus May 2013 | Concordia Primary Campus | Martin Luther Primary Campus 23 Alumni News Descendants of Wilcox Family Visit Redlands Building If we had to define Heritage in its purest architectural sense it would certainly be this iconic building. Redlands encapsulates the optimism of pioneering Toowoomba families in the 1880s and bears witness to the beginnings of Concordia Memorial College in 1946. It has cultural heritage significance because “It has a special association with the life of prominent Toowoomba businessman Edmund Wilcox; and with Toowoomba architect James Marks as a major example of his residential work.” It was our pleasure during the Heritage Weekend to play host to three generations of the Wilcox family who travelled from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to be with us. As we toured the building we could only guess at the conversations and dinners from its time as a residence and the necessary changes required by a boarding school. We all agreed that for an old girl born in 1889, she pulls up pretty well! You can see the CLC billboard on the highway near Withcott. 24 Concordia Connections College News On 23 July the entire community of Concordia Lutheran College gathered in The Shed at CPC to experience history in the making. After many months of discussions, surveys and meetings it was agreed to that we needed a mascot to unite us as one student body and to provide us with a symbol that would represent many of the values we hold dear as one College; a community With One Heart. Before coming to our decision to send an invitation to the Lion, we briefly considered the virtues of several other animal mascots including a mouse, a snake and even a cockatoo. In the end, it became clear that the Lion would most certainly best reflect our College Values. The very next day, a letter was sent! During the launch, students watched a video presentation showing the Lion receiving and responding to our invitation. What followed was his journey to Toowoomba until the moment the lion knocked on the door of The Shed, his suitcase still by his side! left out with the arrival of our new mascot. He said: “Pastor Mark, but what happens now that Lion King is here – with his maxi schnozzle – taking centre stage?” Pastor Mark explained: “Luther, I think you’ve got this thing all wrong. You are still a hit! Our Concordia Lion is not here to take your place. A mascot celebrates our unity, that we are together as a College and we have the same values. You see, lions are courageous, brave, part of a tribe, but willing to stand up and be counted alone and willing to fight for what is right.” Pastor Mark went on to remind everyone that our new mascot was just like the College Motto and Song which speak about all of us being part of one community With One Heart. Michael Kaiser Head of College From the stage, I was privileged to see the look of surprise and amazement on the faces of 803 students (not to mention the stunned staff), who seemed to delight in this feeling of being one College from Prep to Year 12. Occasions like this are so important in the life of our community to build a sense of unity and to share dreams, goals and values. As part of the ceremony, Pastor Mark outlined the significance of a mascot to everyone present, including his talking dog, Luther. I think Luther was starting to feel somewhat May 2013 25 College News 2012 Awards Awards of Honour Concordia Medallist - Dux Rosalind Hill Sergeant Tim Zell Award Martin Venz Quota Service Award Jade Rheeder John Stedman Memorial Award Jarred Janetzki Year 7 Lindsay Hayes Year 8 Emmarine Pattel Itiovie Jegede Award Owen J Janetzki for Excellence in Award Drama for Outstanding Vocal Jordyn Rayner Miranda Courtice Helen Abernethy Award for Music Yori Dade Year 12 ESL Commitment Award Donna Chan Year 9 Gryffin Scott Staib Family Award Junior Sportsperson of the Year Alexandra McCowen Bill Abernethy Commitment Award for Athletics Ben Minnikin Bill Abernethy Jennifer Screen Award Commitment Award for Basketball for Athletics Jake Norley Charlotte Lanham Year 10 Ashleigh Creeks Sandy Cox Trophy for Netball - Most Consistent Player Sara Croft 26 Mitch Wormald Award for Excellence in Volleyball Hannah Pattel Long Tan Awards Christina Strano (Year 10), Jake Norley (Year 12), Emma Rae (Year 11) Year 11 Chelsea Blinco Concordia Connections Special Awards USQ Commerce Award Samuel Davis USQ Accounting Award Cassandra Cooper USQ Year 10 Community Award Katie Rae USQ Mathematics Award Thomas Dooley USQ Science Award Chinelo Aghanwa VET Award Emily Elkington-Dent The Arts Gold Award for Music Connor Sharpe Yori Dade Silver Award for Music Jordan Waters Adeline Gavey Jack Lundie-Jenkins Natalie Mcleod Kaitlin Leech Sport Ben Hopman Shield for U15 Rugby League Cameron Markham Redlands Lions Rugby Best and Fairest Mason Trappe Mark Neubecker Trophy for Champion House Kessler Spirit Trophy Altus Half Blues Sha-lane Gibson (Volleyball) Renee Bahnisch (Volleyball) Hannah Pattel (Volleyball) Sara Croft (Volleyball, Athletics) Harrison Smith (Volleyball) Chloe Brazier (Volleyball) Ben Norley (AFL) Nathan Mills (AFL) Matthew Cox (Basketball) Kianna Folker (Basketball) Lillian Dahl (Basketball) Daniel Cherry (Basketball) Charlotte Lanham (Cross Country) Jay Creeks (Athletics) Samuel Davis (Athletics) Full Blues Alexandra McCowen (Cross Country, Athletics) Ainsley Clanchy (Hockey) Charlotte Lanham (Athletics) Sian Denton (Cross Country) Ryley Bishop (Rugby League) Cameron Major (Athletics) Attention All Past Students!
