1.
Installation variants
TruTops Fab is installed as a client/server system. Then it is
possible to choose whether server and client are to be installed on
separate computers or together on one computer.
Separate client and server
(recommended)
The server runs on one computer with the database and all
necessary services. The TruTops application runs on its own
computers (clients) that communicate with the server via the
network.
This division helps attain maximum efficiency of the system since
every component has a separate computer.

Disadvantages
Losses in performance on the server are possible whenever the
client installed on the server computer has to do intensive
calculations. This makes it more difficult for the other clients to
access the server data.

System components
2.1
Notes
Some additional system components are required in order to use
TruTops Fab. During the installation the system checks whether
these components have been installed. If not, they are installed
automatically. The installation process is displayed on the screen.
Restart
The computer automatically restarts after a few components are
installed.
For this installation process, you should be aware of the following:
• Unsaved data is lost after a restart. All open files and programs
should thus be closed before installation.
• If the installation is being carried out on an active server,
appropriate precautions must be taken for the server restart.
2.2
List of components
Note
• The table contains all components on the installation DVD
along with a brief description and installation notes.
• The components that are actually installed depend on the
installation and the operating mode. They are displayed during
the installation process.
• The components are listed in the table in alphabetical order.
The actual order during the installation is displayed on the
screen.
• The installation of some components requires user
intervention. These components are described separately(see
section 2.3, p. 11).

In order to use TruTops PDM, it is necessary for some of the
TruTops PDM applications to communicate with other computers in
the network. All access is monitored and unknown applications are
denied access if a firewall is installed. Windows XP with Service
Pack 2 has its own system firewall which is active by default.
