Update
Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends,
Another season passes and transitions into the next. As I
write this and look out the windows of my office today at
the bleak, gray sky, I would welcome a warm wool sweater
and a pumpkin spice latte. The vivid colors of fall are
beginning to fade as the leaves start to drop and I miss
the warm sunshine and unseasonably beautiful October
we have experienced thus far. I am also reminded that
Thanksgiving is close behind, with the chill of winter right
around the corner.
have already committed their support. We are merely
$700,000 away from attaining the goals of this campaign!
As we express our gratitude, it is my hope that we will
continue to merit your faith and your investment in our
mission. Thank you for your generosity and for sharing
your blessings with the young women of Mercy High
School.
With warm wishes for a blessed Thanksgiving to your and
your families,
Ingrid Kalinowski Borghoff ‘65
Vice President for Advancement
As you peruse this magazine and the enclosed annual
report, you will note that we at Mercy High School
have much for which to be thankful. Our Mercy girls
continue to excel academically, receiving numerous awards
in a wide variety of disciplines; our dedicated faculty
and administrators willingly go the extra mile for each
and every student, to ensure the best possible learning
environment; negotiated tuition -- the Mercy way -ensures that girls from all socio-economic strata and with
diverse ability ranges are accepted into Mercy High School.
Someone recently asked me, “Isn’t it tough to raise money
in this economic climate?” I responded that, while it is
increasingly challenging, we have been blessed at Mercy
High School with the loyal and consistent support of our
alumnae, parents, and friends – all partners in ministry in
the legacy left us by Catherine McAuley, foundress of the
Sisters of Mercy – the careful instruction of women.
In the words of playwright and author, Thornton Wilder,
“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when
our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” I count our
treasures and our blessings daily: our Mercy girls and
parents, our excellent faculty and administrators, and you,
our generous benefactors, who make possible the gift of
Mercy. You do this in so many ways and I must admit we
give you ample opportunity to support us!
I am grateful that our Gratitude for God’s Mercy capital
campaign has secured over $1.2 million in gifts and
pledges. All of Mercy’s faculty and staff, the Board of
Directors and numerous alumnae, parents, and benefactors

The Driving for Excellence Golf Fest held on Monday, July
26 at The Players Club at Deer Creek golf course was a
win-win for the 168 golfers and Mercy High School. The
golfers benefited from the picture perfect weather and
enjoyed the golf course with live entertainment provided
by DJ Craig Estudillo, who delighted the crowd with a
variety of tunes and commentary.
The event raised $51,000 which directly benefits Mercy
High School’s negotiated tuition. For 19 years, the Driving for Excellence Golf

Carolyn Jaworski Honored for Academic Excellence
Ever since Ms. Carolyn Jaworski ’64 was a child,
she knew she wanted to be a teacher. She was one
of those kids who would stay after school to help
the teachers, or she would go up to school over
the summer and help teachers get their classrooms
ready and help sort all the school supplies. “I just
loved being around school and around teachers,”
said Jaworski. “I never thought of doing anything
else except be a teacher.”
Jaworski was taught by the Sisters of Mercy
all through grade school at Holy Cross, high
school at Mercy, and college at the College of St.
Mary. “Being exposed to these dedicated women
and seeing their love of children and their love
of education convinced me that the world of
education was the right fit for me,” said Jaworski.
For 18 years, Jaworski taught speech, drama, and
English while also serving as assistant principal at
Mercy High School.
However, Jaworski never thought she would be a
school principal and considered it a great honor as
she accepted the position as Mercy’s principal 23
years ago. “I felt that it was what God was calling
me to do,” said Jaworski.
Under Jaworski’s leadership, Mercy has achieved
recognition as an outstanding educational institution
and increased and stabilized enrollment by offering
a unique negotiated tuition plan leading to one
of the most diversified student populations in the
Archdiocese.
One of the most innovative curricular changes led
by Jaworski is the development and implementation
of a school-wide rubric for the evaluation of
research projects and papers. She serves on
external evaluation teams for the state and
educational task forces within the Archdiocese.
Jaworski has also served in national leadership
positions in the Network for Mercy Education.
On September 16, 2010, Jaworski was honored
as administrator of the year at the Archdiocese
of Omaha Archbishop Dinner for Education
for her 40 years of service to Mercy High School
and educating the young women of the Omaha
metropolitan area.

As principal, Jaworski’s greatest satisfaction is
creating an environment where every girl can grow
in faith, knowledge, and service, while evolving
from a Mercy girl into a woman of Mercy. She
cares deeply and sincerely for every girl, from the
A.P. scholar to the one who struggles to overcome
academic challenges. She is a dedicated, sincere,
inspiring, and authentic educational leader who is
approachable, listens well, and responds from the
heart.
“Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of
Mercy, is one of the greatest inspirations in my life,”
said Jaworski. “Daily I ask for her wisdom and her
guidance as I go about my work as the instructional
leader of Mercy High School. She is a fabulous
example and wonderful role model for women,
young and old.”
In her moments of free time, Jaworski manages
to squeeze in time to read and travel. She enjoys
spending time with her family, friends, and two
dogs.

Voices of Appreciation from Faculty and Alumnae
“Ms. Jaworski’s belief in the Mercy mission of
giving young women a lifetime advantage is
witnessed through her strong visionary leadership,
organization, attention to detail, curriculum
development, policy direction, faculty selection,
building renovations, and push for negotiated
tuition. Mercy has been transformed into the
amazing educational institution it is today, from
that of 40 years ago. Thank you, Ms. Jaworski, for
making Catherine McAuley’s dream a lasting reality
in Omaha. – Kathy Redding, current librarian and a
faculty member for 36 years
“I’ve known Ms. Jaworski since I was a scared,
shy 14 year old freshman in her speech class in
the 70’s. She instilled in me the knowledge that I
can do anything I put my mind to…even stand up
in front of a group of people and give a speech.
She recognized a talent in me, and I went on to
become involved in the speech team and theatre
programs here at Mercy. As a theatre director,
Ms. Jaworski always strove for perfection, and her
students learned to do the same. As a teacher in
the classroom, she had a passion for her subject
matter that I had never seen before, and she lit a
fire of passion in me. It was Ms. Jaworski’s passion
that made me decide to become a teacher in the
same areas of English, speech, and theatre. She
has been my role model and mentor ever since. I
have found over the almost 20 years that I have
been teaching at Mercy that Ms. Jaworski is just
as passionate about being an administrator as she
was in the classroom. Her passion is not, however,
for the prestige, the position, or the power being
an administrator brings. Her passion is for the
girls. Every policy she makes is centered on what
is best for our girls and bringing them to realize
their potential as Christian women of Mercy.” –
Kate Janca Adams, an English teacher for 28 years (19 at
Mercy) and a 1977 alumna
“Ms. Jaworski places the mission of Catherine
McAuley and the teachings of Jesus at the heart
of everything we do as a school. She is a principal
who gives her teachers a lot of autonomy. That has
really helped me as a teacher grow in my field. She
encourages creativity and ingenuity. Our students
are not intimidated by her and feel welcomed and
appreciated in her presence. She models respect
and an incredible work ethic. – Julie Vankat, Mercy
Theology Chair and teacher at Mercy for 16 years
“As I witnessed the countless hours before and after
school that Carolyn spent working with students
and mentoring many young women, I developed
an immense admiration for her and consider her
one of my best teachers. Ask any of my classmates
whom they consider the most influential and
inspiring of their teachers at Mercy and they will
most likely respond, Ms. Jaworski.” - Nicole Hahn
Jesse ’80, co-owner of LaCasa Pizzeria and a current
Mercy parent
“Leadership. Service. As a student I always
had what I refer to as ‘a healthy fear’ of Ms.
Jaworski. She was always the first to sit us down
when we needed a stern talking-to, but the next
night she would be in the stands cheering like crazy
as we scored one for her Monarchs. She bleeds blue
and gold.” – Mary Ann Wieberg Tietjen ’90 –Spanish
teacher at Mary Our Queen.
“One of the first and most lasting pieces of advice
I received from Ms. Jaworski as a new teacher
some two decades ago was that I needed to stop
thinking in terms of ‘I teach math’ to ‘I teach
students.’ Her focus as an educator is always on the
student. Subject matter expertise is essential, but it
can only take you so far. The real joy and challenge
and excitement in teaching arises from figuring out
how best to serve the needs of a particular student,
and how to orchestrate a classroom where students
support each other in their growth and learning.
The depth and breadth of Ms. Jaworski’s experience
with young people and their families, paired with
genuine love and concern and belief in the Gospels
and in the mission of Mercy High School, guides
her decision-making in all situations. This has led to
the development of a profound level of trust in and
respect for her, not only by me personally but by the
many members of the Mercy High community and
educators at all levels throughout the archdiocese
and throughout the country who have worked
with Carolyn on committees and boards dedicated
to improving education.” – Maureen Davis, Mercy
curriculum specialist and math teacher for 22 years

Caring for Those with Cancer
Meg Latka Peters ’04, a nurse in the
oncology/hematology department at
the University of Nebraska Medical
Center (UNMC), credits her career
success to the rigorous education she
received at Mercy High School. “The
extensive anatomy and physiology
classes at Mercy prepared me well for
the college anatomy and physiology
classes,” said Peters. “I can’t thank
Ms. Heather Newville enough for the
passion she has for science and her
great science classes.” The AP math
classes she took at Mercy enabled her
to bypass the college math course
which allowed her to graduate a
semester earlier.

“The all girl environment and strong
academic foundation not only
prepared me academically for college,
but also gave me the confidence
to excel,” said Peters. “Mercy also
provided me a spiritual foundation
and a social awareness that I feel is
critical in today’s society.” The life
of Catherine McAuley, foundress of
the Sisters of Mercy, has played an
instrumental part in Peters’ life. After
graduating Mercy, she left with full
understanding of Catherine’s life and
how she called others to help with her
mission of caring for those in need.
Peters felt that her call was to become
a nurse. Her decision to specialize in
oncology/hematology was spurred
when her father was diagnosed with
cancer during her senior year in high
school. For an anatomy project,
Peters interviewed one of the nurses
caring for her father. “In witnessing
what a positive impact she had on

patients,” said Peters.

On July 16, 2010, Peters and her

the St. Baldrick event for childhood
cancer research. The Peters went
under the clippers to go bald in
solidarity with the children battling
cancer. “Children fighting cancer not
only lose their hair, but precious years

to a child’s struggle, shaving my head
was a small sacrifice.” She dedicated
her new haircut in honor of one of
her patients, Jordan, who at age 5 was

National Honor Society
Committed to Service
Members of the National Honor
Society volunteered their time at a
Red Cross Blood Drive on October

agreed to participate in just two
weeks later. Nine members of
Mercy’s National Honor Society and
two faculty members volunteered
to paint the house of an elderly
gentleman in the Holy Cross area on
October 16. They scraped, primed
and painted during a three-hour
morning and afternoon shift.

become co-owner of Micki’s Dance Studio. I started taking
dance class from Micki Pospisil when I was six years old
and continued through high school and into college. Over
the years, I became an assistant at the studio and started
realizing my passion for teaching dance. I expressed to
Micki that I would love to be a part of the continuing
legacy of her studio if and when she ever decided to step
down. That became a reality, with the partnership of my
long time friend and fellow dancer, Lisa Beneke. We are
on our second season as studio owners and loving every
minute of it. Our students range from age three to high
school and beyond, some of which are fellow Mercy girls.”

of volunteering with a new-born non-profit, called La
Biblioteca Interactiva de Baños - a children’s library! The
library has grown incredibly in the past two years, and I
have grown with it. While teaching Spanish for several
Montessori classrooms around Omaha, this fall I started
graduate classes at University of Nebraska at Omaha, for
a masters in public administration, focusing on non-profit
management. My dream job would be the project manager
for a Latin American project of an international nonprofit.
