Flowers in the Sanctuary
Table in the Commons
The flowers this weekend (24/25 May) have been sponsored by Lorraine Fitzsimmons in memory of her sister Loretta A. George. We join in remembering Loretta and all of our
deceased loved ones. The flowers next weekend (31 May/01
June) have been donated by the Neradka family in honor of
Donna and Vince Neradka’s 50th wedding anniversary on
May 30th, and by Julia Lee in honor of her marriage to Song
Hung on June 1. The notebook is located on the table in the
Commons if you would like to sign up to sponsor flowers for
a weekend. You may order 1-3 arrangements, at $75 each,
and indicate who is being honored or memorialized. Thank
you!
Have you stopped by the table in the Commons lately?
There are lots of materials for you to look through, providing
information on a variety of activities and ministries here at St.
Elizabeth’s. We currently have the current parish calendar,
parish registration information, trip registration forms
(including our fall trip to Spain), Justice and Service opportunities, information about baptizing a baby, or utilizing the
Sunday nursery for your little ones, as well as School information, small group information, VBS registration, how to
sign up for Faith Direct AND information about our year-long
celebration of our 50th Anniversary! Spend some time checking out the table this weekend!
Congratulations, Fr. Ryan Lerner!
Adult Confirmation
Many of you got to know Ryan through his two years of
working with us on Sundays as he completed his time as a
seminarian here in the DC area. Last Saturday, Ryan received
the sacrament of Holy Orders and was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Hartford, CT! While we hope he
gets the chance to come back and visit sometime soon — and
preside at Mass here — he received his assignment last weekend and will be serving as the associate pastor at St. Margaret’s in Madison. If you would like to send him a note or
card, he would love to hear from you. (St. Margaret’s, PO
Box 814, Madison, CT 06443). Kathy Swartz, Mark Asselin
and Jeanie McAndrew represented our parish at Ryan’s ordination and you can check out some photos of the Mass on our
parish’s Facebook Page (St Elizabeth Church)!
Each spring during the Easter season the Archdiocese of
Washington offers the opportunity for practicing adult Catholics who have already received First Eucharist to complete the
Sacraments of Initiation by receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. This year Confirmation of adults will be celebrated
with a special Mass at St. Matthew Cathedral on Ascension
Sunday, June 1st (Next Sunday). To prepare and register,
please contact Paul Yetter in the parish office (301.881.1380
or email at pyetter@stelizabethchurch md.org).
Need Prayers?
The St. Elizabeth Sodality Prayer Group meets Thursday
mornings to pray for those listed in the Bulletin and in the
Sodality Prayer Request Book. You are invited to write your
prayer intentions in the book which is on the table in the
Commons, and we will include them in our prayers. All parishioners are invited to pray with us Thursdays at 10:30am in
the Family Room.

Volunteers Needed for Carnival
Please see the bulletin board in the Commons to see
where you can help! Short shifts are available and many
hands make the work very light! Assistance with checking in
attendees, helping serve the buffet, grilling … there’s something for all interests and abilities.
Pop Up Tents Still Needed
4-6 more pop up tents are still needed for our carnival
set up on June 8th, so if you have one you can loan us for the
day, it would be most appreciated! Please let us know if you
can help. These tents contribute greatly to our beverage and
grilling set ups for the carnival, but thus far we have only
two committed. Please contact the parish office if you have
one you can lend us.
Collection for Haiti This Weekend
This is the second of three collections this year for our
sister parish in Haiti for our children in pre-kindergarten and
kindergarten for both of the teachers and for their midmorning meal. Father Mesidor tells us that hungry stomachs
cannot hear their lessons. We are also hoping to add some
classrooms for our children. Presently we have four classes
and a two room school with cracked walls and a leaky
roof. Toward this end, we have closed our clinic, hoping that
those we have newly identified with high blood pressure and
diabetes and those who are ill will continue to use the clinics
in the nearby areas. Please stop by the bulletin board this
weekend to see the names of the children whom we have
sponsored through the years since we began our twinning
relationship to reopen the school in 2003 for the children.
Food Pantry Collection on June 1
St. Elizabeth’s regular first Sunday of the month food
collection for the St. Camillus Food Pantry will take place on
Sunday, June 1. The approximately 1,100 bags of groceries
collected for the Food Pantry at St. Elizabeth over the first
five months of 2014 represents an increase of more than 50
percent over the same period last year. This faithful and generous response to the ever-present reality of hunger in the
Langley Park Community and has made a huge difference
both in the Pantry’s ability to serve its needy clients and in
the lives of many hungry families. (Even though individual
visits to the Food Pantry are limited to no more than once a
month, the Pantry served over 8,000 families last year.) Current food priorities are: Vegetable Oil, Masa Harina for tor-
3
tillas, and Black Beans (dried), (the three most requested
items), plus Dried Milk or UHT Shelf-Stable Milk or Evaporated Milk, Canned Fruit (pineapple and peaches), Oatmeal
(canisters), White Rice (increasingly important), Spaghetti,
Pasta, and Pasta Sauce, Cornflakes or Cheerios, Macaroni and
Cheese, Canned Tomatoes, Tuna Fish, Canned Corn, and
Canned Peas. (The toothpaste, toothbrushes, and toiletries
that some parishioners include with their food donations have
also been very much appreciated).
Future Day Trips: Sailabration / Scenic Train
Other day trips have also been lined up and you’ll find the
information/registration forms on the table in the Commons
and the parish website as well. On September 11th, we’ll visit
Baltimore for the 200th anniversary celebration of the Star
Spangled Banner, with a cruise, a flyover presentation by the
Blue Angels, and a visit to Fort McHenry. Then on October
21st we’re heading to Cumberland to board the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad train for a luncheon trip to Frostburg and
back. Both of these trips are more than half sold so if you want
to insure your space … sign up soon!
Want to Learn More about Ignatius?
The parish trip this year will take us to northeastern Spain
and the area where St. Ignatius grew up, September 24 - October 2. We’ll visit Montserrat (Benedictine Abbey of Black
Madonna fame), Manresa (known for the cave where St. Ignatius’ began writing his spiritual exercises), Poblet, Montblanc

June 5 Briefing on the Parish
Justice and Service Program
St. Elizabeth has an active Justice and Service outreach
program which receives generous support from parishioners
and several parish organizations. Parishioners are invited to
participate in a briefing from volunteers in the Justice and
Service Network on Thursday evening, June 5, at 7:30 in the
St. Elizabeth School Library. The meeting will provide an
update on recent and planned outreach activities and solicit
views on how the current program can be strengthened and
improved. Programs to be covered will include St. Elizabeth's
role in the St. Camillus Food Pantry, the Langley Park Partnership, our sister parish in Haiti, So Others Might Eat, Community Ministries of Rockville, and the Justice and Advocacy
Council of Montgomery County in addition to new issues or
suggestions that participants may wish to raise. “It takes a
parish” to plan and implement programs that make a difference in the lives of the poor and vulnerable and it is your time,
talent, and support that are so crucial to program success.

Youth Ministry News
We were quite pleased to welcome thirteen new 8th graders into our youth ministry program last Sunday night at our Welcome Party. It
was a very positive and encouraging mood during this time of transition and our fun games helped tremendously. After a name game icebreaker we played a speed dating game in which the new students met each regular member of our group with fun questions for 30 seconds
each. We then played a youth group favorite, the family game which was a big hit. Our evening ended with our upperclassmen sharing
words of advice to our incoming freshmen. One of our senior leaders, Victoria Mickens, encouraged them to remain in our youth group
throughout high school as it is such a fun group with positive and friendly peers and adults.
Another graduating senior wrote us a beautiful thank you note we would like to share with you. "Thank you for all these years of fun,
learning, laughter, and PIZZA! I really appreciate all the hard work you have put in to make my encounter with God and Christ special. I
will miss you next year and everyone at St. E’s. This has been a wonderful journey and I hope to come visit soon. I will never forget St. E’s
because through St. E’s I have grown to be a better person and have fallen in love with God."
On this note, we would like to encourage any current 8-12th grade parishioners who have never attended a youth group event before
whether it be a social, service, or spiritual event to consider joining us especially with our exciting summer calendar of events. Not sure who
you might know in our group? Then join our Facebook group “St. E’s Youth Group” and you might be surprised at the 100 local high
schoolers who participate in our parish teen events. We recently sent off twenty high school seniors who were active in our youth ministry
program and would love to see more teens fill their shoes.
