Jackson Free Methodist Church Jfmchurch.org August 2014 Hola, Amigos! We are SO excited to announce that we are hosting FIESTA VBS 2014 at JFM, where kids are fired up about Jesus!!! August 19th- 21st you will be able to witness and help kids in our church and community experience Jesus and learn to flame the fire of our Lord and Savior. We are continuing the tradition of following Revved Up (another awesome event for our community) in hopes to bring the kiddos back for three days of powerful truth and fun! There will be no siestas here, although you may want to take one after you are done with the day. We plan on celebrating Jesus' love with lively mariachi bands, colorful costumes, spicy chili peppers, and warm friends. If you are wondering if you should help, wonder no more. The answer is YES! We can use YOU. Everyone involved in VBS will jump into God's Word and will never be the same. God can and will use you to bring the kingdom. Imagine the impact for generations to come! We need people to lead and help with our Fiesta Crews (small groups), Maraca Munchies (snacks), Hot Bible Adventures, Cactus Crafts, and play Grande Games. We look forward to celebrating with you!! If you have any questions contact Jill Mason or Lauren Daigle at ldaigle@jfmchurch.org. 8:30 am- Classic • 9:45 am- Contemporary • 11:15 am- Contemporary • Kids’ Ministry at 9:45 & 11:15 WORSHIP The deadline for the September newsletter is Sunday, August 17. Please submit information to the church office. Items may be edited for reasons of space, style or clarity. Whole-hearted devotion to the Lord that exalts Him in every way. We honor Him daily through our obedience, prayer, generosity, and celebration. THURSDAY NIGHT PRAYER FORCE We meet in the sanctuary on Thursday nights at 6:45 pm. Every week we pray for JFM, missions around the world and individuals. Come and join in the intersession. CONCERT OF PRAYER There will be a concert of Prayer on August 7 starting at 6:45 pm. This will be a time to get together to pray for Revved UP! and Vacation Bible School. We all know that God answers prayer and we want Him to do miracles at both of these events. Won’t you come and spend some time in prayer? WORSHIP MINISTRY I want to say thank you to all our volunteers in the worship ministry. During the summer months it can be very difficult to fit in serving at JFM with everyone’s schedules and family vacations. However I can’t keep from telling you how blessed we are to have people in all areas of the worship ministry who aren’t just dialing it back for the summer, but ramping it up! From musicians who open up their schedules to fill in for others, to skillful technicians who go above and beyond in preparing us to facilitate rich moments with our Creator. We are all blessed by their service and so thankful for their commitment and sacrificial participation. “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” Romans 12:11 “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10 To help us save trees, get your copy of The Journey electronically through email! It’s my belief that these verses embody the hearts of our volunteers in the worship ministry at JFM, and not just the worship ministry, but throughout our Church. However, as we celebrate who God is together, I cannot help but be especially thankful for the group of individuals that He has provided to facilitate and lead us in our times of corporate worship every Sunday. They are truly exceptional and I am so grateful for each of them! Our search committee (comprised of Pastor Jason Engle, Pastor Mark Murphy, John Nally, Brent Hall, Marge Throne and Bill Spencer), along with the entire Pastoral Care and Personnel Committee, have taken a slow and prayerful approach throughout this process. Above all things, we wanted to hear from the Lord and have complete unity as a team. One thing we always knew was that the Lord would provide the right person to come to JFM, one who would embrace our community, and lead well. I am excited to announce that we have hired Pastor Tim Flickinger as our new Adult Journey Pastor. Tim will start his ministry here at JFM on August 11th and will be preaching for the first time on August 17th. He and his wife, Kris, bring with them a number of exceptional gifts and many years of ministry experience. We are excited for you to meet them and know you will be blessed through their ministry. Join us between services as we welcome them with a reception on Sunday morning, August 24th. Pastor Jason Hey JFM gang! Here’s a brief introduction to the Flick family and my heart ~ My wife, Kris, and I have been married for 32 years. Most people feel she deserves sainthood. She loves being a mom and grandma, and works part time for a cool place called Josh’s Frogs. Kris grew up in this neck of the woods – a graduate of Vandercook HS! We have 3 fantastic kids. Taylor (19) will be a sophomore at Cornerstone U. He just finished a life-changing summer as a camp counselor. Taylor has a unique sense of humor. Holly (28) works part time jobs at Josh’s and as a personal trainer. She recently forced me through the Insanity workouts. I have not forgiven her yet. She is working on her Masters in counseling at Spring Arbor. Nick (30) is a chief resident (doctor) in Anchorage, Alaska. He is married to a great gal, Jessica, who taught music at Townsend for a few years. They have two girls - the most adorable granddaughters that ever existed Sadie “Tornado” and “Loveable Lucy Luuuuu.” People usually see our family and comment, “They obviously got their genes from their mother.” I like fishing and desserts (but not desserts made with fish). I think “funner” should be a real word. My favorite thing to do is informally hang out with people, playing ball or eating or doing everyday life stuff. I dunk basketballs, climb Mount Everest, parasail the Caribbean coast, and other cool stuff – all while sleeping While I like fun, my faith in Jesus is the passionate pursuit of my life. It is because of Him that I am made right with my Father. I am forever grateful – to say that isn’t even adequate. An umbrella statement over my life would be: “Love God, love people, and live everyday life by faith in Jesus – by the power of the Holy Spirit.” A lifetime of growing and learning to live that way defines my journey. A couple phrases you will often hear me say are, “everyday disciple” and, “It’s a way of life. It’s who we are.” Trusting Jesus and following Jesus and representing Jesus in everyday life isn’t an event we do and then go back to our regular lives. Our walk of faith is an all-the-time kinda thing – lived out in the awesome, lousy, important, and boring stuff of life. I don’t want to love my neighbor because I’m supposed to or because it’s my job, but because it is just how someone who loves Jesus lives. A Big Desire is to see every believer filled with the life of the Spirit, to be able to hear and follow His leading. I think nothing influences culture like Christ-followers living out their faith in the realities of everyday life – where we live, work, play, shop, go to school, buy donuts. JFM’s four core values mirror my own, and they are each equally vital to the life of an everyday disciple. I am eager to fan those into flame with you, and to cheer each other on in our journey. I’ve had the chance to be with JFM’s incredible staff and am moved to see the unity and excitement for what God is doing. It is scary, though, waiting for what I’ve heard referred to as the, “Blindfolded Samurai Triple-Swirly” initiation! My “church history” – youth pastor for 10 years in nearby Brooklyn. I still miss that sometimes. Then for 12 years - most of those as senior pastor - in Fowlerville, Michigan. (We had 3 services a week, also – Jason, look what that did to the color of my hair). And the past couple of years in particular have been on a “missional” church planting adventure in Lansing. Some of the deepest growth of my life has come during these past few years. These years have included such a wide variety of experiences – Mind-boggling, surprising, disappointing, powerful, painful, glorious, hilarious, sad, life-changing, life-challenging, heart breaking, thrilling… anything and everything in between. God has been at work in and through all of that, even if I didn’t always recognize it. It is all part of a journey of faith. I’m looking forward to getting to know you, and being on the journey together! WooHoo! Tim Flickinger COMMUNITY Gathering together to grow, encourage and support each other in our journey with Jesus. Our commitment to one another will attract others and deepen our devotion to God. YOU ARE INVITED Join us Sunday, August 24 at 6 pm for our lakeside baptism service. Marriage Matters Jackson (MMJ) is all about fun workshops and events for married and dating couples, but MMJ also knows marriage can be challenging -- let’s face it, there are often tough topics couples need to tackle. That’s why MMJ offers a FREE Marriage Restoration workshop every Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. in downtown Jackson at the United Way Center, 526 N. Jackson Street. Few marriages are too good or too bad for this workshop, which teaches you how to make your relationship stronger. Marriage Restoration is an on-going, drop-in educational workshop with different topics discussed each week. Some of the weekly topics include: understanding expectations, redefining the power struggle, control issues, rebuilding trust, and forgiveness and repair. All are welcome to come and learn, with no pressure to share. Participants can attend as needed to gain support while learning tools to help rebuild their relationship. For more information, visit www.MarriageMattersJackson.com, call MMJ’s main office at (517) 796-5116 or help yourself to the materials provided on the information wall in the MAC entryway. Our commitment to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading causes us to live beyond ourselves. AUGUST MISSION FOCUS: BURENZA & BUSOMA This summer with the opening of the Burenza Medical Clinic, JFM hopes to partner with the clinic to feed 100 children through International Child Care Ministry’s Busoma project. “WHAT is IT”… is what the Israelites said when God gave them “MANNA” to eat in the Desert! So you may too wonder “What is IT – Busoma?” At the Kibuye Hope Hospital, home of the BUSOMA plant, Corn, Sorghum and Soy grains are roasted and ground into a high protein hot cereal for malnutritioned children. Dr. Jason Fader, of K-H Hospital has recently had BUSOMA tested for nutritional content and confirmed that it is a great whole food. Experts advised that micro-nutrients could also be added to make it even more effective in combating severe malnutrition, which is presently being considered. The Busoma Project hopes to expand production this year so that every patient at the Kibuye Hope Hospital can eat BUSOMA for breakfast daily as part of their nutritional regimen. Hundreds of ICCM donors over the years have shared in this unique and highly impactful ministry. This October JFM aims to partner with ICCM & Busoma Project in Burenza to begin a nutritional program at the clinic. Jesus said, “I was hungry and you fed me.” BUSOMA fills the bill! Page 8 COMPASSION, cont’d DIVORCE CARE A new session of DivorceCare will be starting on Thursday evening, September 18th and running for 13 weeks. Meetings run from 6:30-8 pm at JFM.
