MARIST COLLEGE
GUEST ACCOUNT POLICY
Marist College provides computing resources for academic and business purposes on campus. Use of these resources for any other reason can only take place if there is no contention for the resources on campus. Marist websites and servers are accessible from campus without restriction. Access to non-Marist sites requires a valid Marist account ID.
Guest ID’s for non-Marist constituents are available with the approval of the Marist Vice
President of Information Technology. Request forms for Guest ID’s must contain the requestor’s name, address, social security number (needed to build the account), date of birth, phone number, reason for the usage, and the duration the ID is needed.
Users of these ID’s must abide by the Marist College Information and Computing Agreement that is distributed with the approved ID. These ID’s are non-transferable and must be renewed every six months. Failure to abide by the usage agreement may result in your ID being revoked.
Labs are for support of the academic mission. If resources are full, guests must yield to Marist students, faculty and staff.
All guest accounts require a written request to be accompanied with a Help Desk User
Report. This request is a statement of intent. It is kept on file with the general CMS systems security administrator. These requests are granted for six-month periods. If the guest would like to retain their account beyond six months, they must write a letter requesting such extension one month prior to the expiration of this account. The extension request can be via email, and will be printed and kept with the original request.
Any guest account not used within two weeks after creation will be locked. If the requester contacts Information Technology within two weeks following its deactivation, it will be reactivated, otherwise it will be deleted and any further request will be reconsidered.
All guest accounts will be reviewed quarterly to verify activity of active accounts and to remove expired accounts. If a guest does not request reactivation of their account within two weeks following its expiration, the account will be removed from the system.
Marist College
Information and Computing Agreement
As a user of Marist College computer facilities, I agree to abide by the following provisions:
1. I will possess and use only the computer account(s) (also known as “userid(s)”) provided to me. As part of this understanding, I will take the responsibility to protect my account(s) from unauthorized access. I further agree to change my password(s) at least once every six (6) months. This regulation is primarily for the protection of my account(s) and the files stored therein. If I become aware of any attempts to violate or bypass these security mechanisms,
I will promptly report such attempts to the Office of Information Services or the Office of Safety and Security.
2. I will respect the privacy of information stored using Marist computer facilities, whether it belongs to me or others. I agree not to acquire or modify in any way information belonging to another person without the explicit permission of that person. Information which has been acquired or modified is still the property of the original owner and may not be further distributed or modified without the explicit permission of the original owner.
3. I recognize that acquiring a copy of someone else’s work, in whatever form, with or without the owner’s permission, with the intent to present it as my own work is an act of plagiarism and is strictly prohibited. Similarly, providing others with my work knowing that their intent is to present it as original work is likewise strictly prohibited.
4. I agree to abide by any patent or copyright restrictions which may relate to the use of computer facilities, products, programs, or documentation. I agree not to copy, disclose, modify or transfer any that I did not create, without the expressed consent of the original author. I agree not to use any Marist
College equipment or software to violate the terms of the License Agreement, or any applicable local, state, or federal laws. I further agree not to tamper with or in any way modify the equipment to which I have access.
5. I agree not to use Marist College equipment or software for any form of private financial gain. Business pursuits or a user of Marist College facilities not pertaining to the user’s primary relationship with the college will normally require the creation of a separate billable account.
6. I agree to use carefully and responsibly any computer devices made available to me, and recognize that I assume full responsibility for any loss, damage, or destruction of such devices that is caused by my negligence, misuse, abuse, or carelessness. Any problems should be reported immediately to the Student Aides or Information Services Help Desk.
7. Some services are made available with the understanding that the user will limit his or her use to reasonable levels, such as workstation time, printing, use of internal and external networks, etc. Both student and professional employees of Information Services have been instructed to deny such services to any person who takes undue or unfair advantage of these offerings.
8. I agree to abide by the instructions of those personnel and will limit my use accordingly. Students engaging in educational use of the system have priority over students using the facilities for recreational purposes, and hence may ask for the recreational user’s workstation if there are insufficient workstations available.
9. Access to the Marist College computer facilities by unauthorized persons or for unauthorized purposes is forbidden. I agree not to take any

Attempting to access restricted portions of the operating system or accounting software.
Sending harassing messages to other computer users either at Marist or through external networks.
Using inappropriate or foul language to other users or staff.
Excessive use of batch or printing facilities.
Use of BITNET or the internet for recreational purposes during prime use hours (Monday-Friday 10am-5pm or when there are few free workstations).
Any behavior that causes distractions to other users (eg. radios, loud conversations, shouting, etc.)
Eating, drinking, or smoking in the computer lab areas.
10. If I am unsure whether or not an activity might constitute inappropriate use, I further agree to request in advance from the Office of Information
Services a clarification that such activities do not constitute inappropriate use.
11. I also understand that possession or distribution of documentation, materials, or devices which describe, promote, or facilitate unauthorized use of the computer facilities in prohibited and is considered inappropriate use.
12. If I become aware of any attempt to violate any portion of this agreement I agree to report the attempt to the Office of Information Services either in person or via electronic mail (to userid ADMIN on CMS). I also understand that failure to report such incidents is a violation of this agreement and will be treated as such. The Office of Information Services will investigate each report carefully; therefore, I will be held responsible for making false reports.
13. I understand that violation of this agreement will result in punitive action. (Any decision made in regard to a violation may be appealed through proper channels.) Such action may include: suspension of some or all of my computer use privileges, revocation of some or all of my computer use privileges, charges or fines which could amount to thousands of dollars, suspension from the College or from employment by the College, expulsion from the College or termination from employment by the College, and referral to a law enforcement agency.
14. The Office of Information Services agrees not to view, access, or enter a computer account without asking the account holder for permission, unless there is a justifiable cause (eg. a program on that account is crashing the system, or there is reason to believe that the account may have been involved in a violation of this agreement), which will be provided on request.
15. This agreement will remain in force as long as I make use of Marist College computer facilities or services. The college and/or the Office of
Information Services may add rules, regulations, or guidelines relating to computer usage. Such additions will be posted prominently on bulletin boards in the public computer use areas. I agree to either accept such additional requirements or to inform the Office of Information Services that such additions are unacceptable to me and I will at that time surrender all computer accounts and privileges made available to me by the College.
16.
By using the computer accounts or facilities provided to me, I acknowledge receipt of a copy of this agreement and agree that with respect to the subject matter hereof, it is my entire agreement with Marist College, superseding any previous oral or written agreements with Marist College.
I have read and agree to abide by this agreement
