Success Story – Lex Services
ADR was invited into Lex Service Plc. by the deputy
Chief Executive. With no central purchasing
competence and over £250 million per year of nonvehicle spend spread across 150 sites in the UK, he
recognised that substantial opportunities for cost and
value improvement were being missed.
ADR’s aim was to identify areas of cost saving
opportunities and assess Lex’s purchasing tools and
practices.
The programme ADR implemented initially involved
five elements:
1. Consolidation and benchmarking of common
spends across Lex.
2. Education and communication to Senior
Managers and purchase agents of modern
procurement thinking.
3. Introduction of new tools and techniques to
key purchase agents within the business.
4. Development and issue of a business wide
directory (initially paper based, later
electronic) of sources/prices for common
expenditure areas.
5. Hands-on management of key spend areas
by ADR personnel.

The second phase consisted of the development of a
structure for a small central team, recruitment into
that team of key personnel and their subsequent
training and development.
Through ADR’s involvement, Lex achieved significant
savings in less than eight months.
In addition, ADR ensured Lex had a well-structured
purchasing team with the necessary knowledge and
skills to ensure the improvements in purchasing were
sustainable.
