DE SOTO AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT SUMMER 2014 NEWSLETTER DE SOTO AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT MISSION STATEMENT: Dedicated to Learning and Growth; Striving for Excellence Seniors celebrated the end of their school year and the beginning of life after high school at the De Soto Area School District Graduation Commencement Ceremony May 23. This time of year is always filled with great joy and celebration. There is so much to celebrate at De Soto. The completion of the new LMC (Library Media Center), which has been in use since April 8, is just one of the great things that happened this school year. The new gymnasium was closed up (walls and roof completed) so it would be water tight before Memorial Weekend. This is an exciting time for students, parents and the community. Both current and future De Soto students will have a great facility to be proud of for many years to come. Graduates of De Soto can also be proud of the facility improvements and future accomplishments of De Soto Pirates. Thanks to the community for the great support. Best of luck! 2 2014 Washington, D.C. 8th Grade Trip May 11-15, 2014 What were some of the best things that happened on the trip? “We walked about 13 miles in one day”- Ethan H. “Seeing U.S. history” - Dylan C. Favorite moment on the trip? “When we got to see the front of the White House” - Cheyanne B. “Looking out of the tower at Gettysburg” - Jesse P. “Washington, D.C. is gorgeous and is very worth it … Lincoln Memorial was so cool at night. He was a lot bigger than I expected. It was beautiful.” - Johanna K. 3 De Soto Biology Club Has Been Busy This Spring! By: Peggy Miller On Thursday, April 17th, we had five students come in on their day off to put together four wooden picnic tables and seal them. These picnic tables will be a part of the new outdoor classroom behind the football field. The tables were not the easiest to put together, but the students figured it out and tools/advice were provided by the Tech Ed Department. The students became very familiar with and comfortable with using power tools by the end of the day! Natalie Boardman applying sealant to a newly put together table. On April 26th, we had four students help with some tree planting on the hill behind the football field. We planted a large number of trees last spring, but last summer was hard on the trees, so we replanted trees in areas where few trees survived. These trees will be used as shade for the outdoor classroom and used in tree identification lesson plans, as well as for other studies and in art classes. Students that helped that morning were Brady Bedward, Jason Fremstad, Tristan Gentry and Denver Peyton. Pat Lown, Austyn Kuhnke and Nick Wang constructed successful bridges made of balsa wood. Denver Peyton planting a sugar maple tree On May 10th, Biology Club members, Brady Bedward, Kameron Perry and Courtney Sandy worked on highway clean-up. Altogether ten bags of garbage were picked up on the Highway 82 hill in De Soto, which is a lot from the winter months! The disturbing part was the amount of empty alcoholic cans/bottles that were picked up on such a dangerous part of Highway 82. We also noted that the ticks are out in full force this spring! The bridges were tested on how many pounds of force they could withstand before breaking. Both bridges submitted were highly rated. The 111 gram bridge built by Austyn and Nick was the most successful, holding 405 pounds of force before breaking. The students also took in many engineering exhibits, displays, lectures and competitions during the day. We attended their Environmental Days which included 4 interesting stations. We met Smokey the Bear, but skipped the rainy hike! We saw many skins and skeletons of animals of Wisconsin in the ‘Education Room’. A man named ‘Blueberry Jack’ shared about life long ago; sharing his arrowheads and other artifacts. There was also a forester who told us about his job working with trees. He showed us how they measure trees without climbing them, and how they can tell how old a tree is without cutting it down. The highlight of the day, though, was a real live bald eagle, named Angel! We were able to sit within 10 feet of her, and were especially entertained when she pooped! We also watched her eat several fish, picking them up with her large talons and tearing pieces off with her beak. Even though it literally never stopped pouring rain, and we were wet much of the time, we had a great day! 7 L to R: Marcie Childs, Nicole Sisbach, Anna Seamans, Ev Wick, Gretchen Kilbey, Rick Pedretti A group from Prairie View participated in the annual half-marathon and & 5K held in Prairie du Chien on May 3rd. Gretchen Kilbey (Speech Therapist), Ev Wick (5th Grade) and Rick Pedretti (School Board) participated in the half-marathon while Nicole Sisbach (Aide), Anna Seamans (Art) and Marie Childs (4th Grade) participated in the 5K. The weather was perfect and Rick and Gretchen placed in their age divisions. Fourth Grade Trip to Madison By: Tracy Gray The fourth graders from Stoddard and Prairie View recently went on a field trip to Madison. We started at the Henry Vilas Zoo. Our second stop was the State Capitol building. From the moment the students and staff walked into the Capitol we were amazed by the beauty and craftsmanship. Everywhere we looked there was stone from a different country, gold plated decorations, and stained glass. The students learned about the history of the Capitol and how the different branches of government currently use the building. Our final stop was at the Wisconsin Historical Museum where we had an hour guided tour. 8 We would like to thank the Parent Teacher Organizations from both schools for helping with the funding of the bus. It was an experience the fourth graders will remember for a long time. Prairie View Easter Family Fun Night By: Lenay Kumlin Where: Prairie View Elementary Garden (at the elementary school in Retreat) When: 2:00-4:00 pm The Prairie View Elementary students celebrated the Easter holiday with an Easter Eggs-stravaganza. The students dyed hard boiled eggs (donated by Gary Kumlin), decorated cookies, and played games. At the end of the night students looked for hidden eggs filled with candy in the hallway. Sunday, June 22 Flowers and Plants; Help with labeling and identifying plants within the garden. Scavenger hunt activity for the children regarding the plants in the garden. Flower pressing craft. Sunday, July 13 Herb Day Monique Hooker (chef) will discuss herbs and their use in cooking. Smell and taste the herbs in the garden. Take home a craft made with herbs. Sunday, July 20 It’s all about the insects! Learn about the insects that help benefit our garden. Take home a craft. Sunday, August 3 Chirp and Flutter! Bird walk, learn to use binoculars and bird identification guides. Binoculars provided. Learn bird songs. Bird related project. Work and Play in the Prairie View Garden Thanks to Terry Sykes for allowing students to tour the green houses this spring. Each student received a marigold plant (donated by PTO). Spring is here and time to get into the garden and weed and plant! With the help of our Fund 80 money we are able to purchase plants and mulch to help beautify the garden. 3rd grade students planted seeds indoors (miniature pumpkin/bird house gourds). The 5th grade students are learning about vermiculture (raising worms/ composting) thanks to Billy’s Wigglers (donating the red worms). The students will use some of the worms for their fishing trip and keep the remaining to learn more about composting. Sunday, August 17 Picnic (end of the summer celebration) and learn about the trees in and around the garden. Bark rubbing craft. Bring a dish to pass, meat will be provided. Save these dates! This summer, we have planned work/play dates in the garden. We will spend 1 1/2 hours weeding/garden work and the last 1/2 hour on learning/projects related to the garden. We encourage any community member and their family to come and join us! No gardening experience necessary! 9 Stoddard Family Literacy Night By: Lisa Robbins On Thursday, May 8 Family Literacy Night was held at Stoddard Elementary with the purpose of promoting literacy and bringing families together. Family Literacy Night was sponsored by the Stoddard Elementary Title I Program. The Berra family enjoying the hot dog meal. Students and family members using Ipads. Students and their parents played board games, minute-to-win games and did iPad exploration. Every child that attended got a free book. Students received a punch card and for every activity they participated in they received a punch on their card. Students then returned their full card for a free book of their choice. A poster for the event was created from a design contest held earlier in April. Volunteers that helped during the event were Nikki Egge (Prairie View Elementary Title I teacher), Barb Sedlmayr and Stacy Matson. The food was prepared earlier in the day by Betsy Knutson. The purpose of “Summer on the River” is to generate interest amongst the students about the Mississippi River and its contributions to the plants, animals, and humans who live along its expansive river valley. Students will learn the history of the Mississippi River from Ice Age times to the present, the effect of the lock and dam system on the river, river-oriented occupations, recreational boating on the river, commercial and recreational fishing on the river, and how the river has changed the landscape over the course of thousands of years. Students will be introduced to men and women who have played and continue to play a role in the river’s history. Through them, “Summer on the River” students, we hope, will come to further appreciate the mightiest of North American rivers. Mr. Crandall will further the students’ learning with lessons that focus on science, geography and math. Such things as the geographic and demographic compositions of the river valley and bluffs will be discussed, as will mathematical principals that allow students to determine such things as water velocity, volume, and the heights of the surrounding bluffs. “Summer on the River” students will discern the similarities and differences of nature’s use of water compared to the water usages of human beings. In that respect, students’ awareness of the importance of conserving water and how that is essential to preserving the unique way of life of river valley residents will grow. “Summer on the River” will be held from June 11-July 2 from 8:0013a.m. -1:30 p.m. FIRST SESSION: DOUBLE THE LEARNING, DOUBLE THE FUN!
