Faculty Workshops University of Toronto Mississauga 2011 – 2012 The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre and the University of Toronto Mississauga Library are providing Faculty Workshops upon request for the 2011 - 2012 academic year. The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre is pleased to offer two related one-on-one sessions for instructors who are preparing their academic courses (workshops are also offered if there is sufficient interest). Preparing Your Course Syllabus to ensure it is aligned with university policies and legislation This session will assist faculty members by describing and providing examples of the essential elements that must be included in your course syllabus. Departmental templates (where available) will be provided to faculty to guide syllabus development and review. Aligning your courses with Undergraduate Degree Level Expectations This session will assist faculty members in planning and preparing course materials for delivery through Blackboard to ensure that they are in alignment with Undergraduate Degree Level Expectations. Examples of course materials and activities from current courses on Blackboard will be provided. This year the University of Toronto Mississauga Library will provide the following workshops: Getting Started – A friendly hands on interactive session that provides an introduction to the Portal. Bring your course materials and sample and select new and improved functionalities and tools to support student learning. Share in an informal discussion of proven and practical guidelines and get new ideas to help streamline your preparations for the upcoming semester. Instructional Technology in Focus – Customized departmental training sessions that focus on advanced topics identified by your instructors. Possible topics (minimum 1 – 2 hours each) include: Grade Center, Communication and Collaboration Tools, Tests and Surveys, Assignments, and Blackboard Course Design. Focus on Curriculum and Student Learning: Information literacy toolkit - An informal session with a University of Toronto Mississauga Liaison Librarian to: Analyze assignments delivered through Blackboard to ensure your students have the necessary information literacy competencies in order to complete them. Review the University of Toronto Mississauga SAILS (Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) data to better understand the student cohort skills and competencies in order to target teaching and learning activities. Using Blackboard as a research tool to enhance students' learning - Use statistics, tests and surveys to inform instruction, to enhance student learning and motivation, and to better understand the impact of technology on student learning. Integrating library resources into your course - An informal session with a Liaison Librarian to develop and integrate: Information literacy assessments to determine the current skill levels of your students and to target library instruction to assist your students in completing course assignments. Learning resource tools to provide access to course specific library resources (such as article databases, reference sources (online and print), text collections, special collections, external web resources, and contact information for your Liaison Librarian) to your students.
