THE YELLOW RIBBON FUND 2010 ANNUAL REPORT Fiscal Year 2010 n March 1, 2009 – February 28, 2010 A s we drew toward the end of our last fiscal year, we celebrated the Yellow Ribbon Fund’s 5th Anniversary. The Yellow Ribbon Fund was incorporated on February 2, 2005. Since the beginning we have raised more than $5.1 million. More importantly, we have provided more than 7,400 free hotel nights, 5,700 free nights in apartments, 1,100 free rental cars for nearly 50,000 days, and 16,000 free taxicab rides. We have touched thousands of injured service members and family members. Whether it is at one of our famous barbecues at the outdoor courtyard that YRF supporters built at Walter Reed Army Medical Center or the thousands of tickets to professional and college games, live theater or concerts, the Yellow Ribbon Fund has been a leader in supporting the injured and their families. After five years of service we are proud to count more than 900 volunteers that support the Yellow Ribbon Fund. Our volunteers help with our Meet & Greets and barbecues, assist with our historic tours or take the service members to ball games. Most impressively, they always come through in a pinch. We have had special requests for cribs, children’s clothes, legal assistance, and other things that don’t fall under the auspices of the military or may not be in the strict interpretation of what YRF can do. But when we get a call from a staff person at Walter Reed or National Naval Medical Center (Bethesda Naval Hospital), who is trying to help an injured service member, we spring into action and our volunteers always find a way to help. We couldn’t be more grateful. Of course, none of this happens without our generous donors. Our total number of donors has grown each year and now numbers close to 5,000. While we had fewer donors this year than last, the average gift was higher, which allowed us to meet and exceed our previous year’s donations. Throughout this Annual Report we will show you how much the Yellow Ribbon has done during the past year and throughout our five years of service. I think you will be proud of how much we have accomplished because of your support. ON THE FRONT COVER: The collage of pictures on the cover of YRF’s 2010 Annual Report shows some of the recovering injured and their family members as they enjoy a few of the many activities YRF offers them at Walter Reed and the National Naval Medical Center. As for the past year, we came through with flying colors. We continued to expand our programs and services. Our 2nd Annual Yellow Ribbon Fund/Army Navy Country Club Golf Classic for Injured Service Members was a success on a beautiful summer’s day. The support of our 22 foursomes and 30 injured service members (with one or more injured service members playing in each foursome), sponsors and donors made it another outstanding event. Other golf tournaments to benefit the Yellow Ribbon Fund were hosted by YRF board member Vito Pampalona in Rochester, Mich., super volunteers Leroy Thompson and Dick Knight in Newport News, Va., Mathew Segal, Matt Brock and Ara Abrahamian in Silver Spring, Md., and Jim Bugg, Jr., in Easton, Md. In all, hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised from these outstanding efforts. We also held our first-ever Gala in November at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md. Hosted by iconic CBS newsman Bob Schieffer and entertained by the Beats Workin’ Band, YRF hosted 250 people at the dinner and auction. Please submit your comments to Marie R. Wood, Editor, at 240-223-1180 or via email at marie@yellowribbonfund.org. As with most charities, 2009 was shaping up as a very difficult financial year. The Great Recession was taking its toll. But what set us apart from other nonprofit organizations was the outpouring of support at the end of the year. Our end-of-year appeal resulted in more than $425,000 in donations in December – a record. During the last three months of 2009, more than $800,000 was received by YRF – the best three-month period ever. In all, our donations for the year increased by 2.9% over the previous year. This is a great accomplishment by our supporters, Board of Directors, staff and volunteers. We cannot thank everyone enough. The Yellow Ribbon Fund was singled out by different organizations for its work this past year. We were selected by the Catalogue for Philanthropy as one of the 68 best small charities in the Washington, D.C. area. The Catalogue is mailed to 30,000 top net-worth households in the Washington community, which has helped broaden our fundraising efforts. Although this didn’t occur in the past fiscal year, we are proud to report that in March, Great Nonprofits, a Web site dedicated to helping people learn more about top charities, has rated the Yellow Ribbon Fund as one of its top veteran’s organizations. We received a unique invitation this year from the American Bus Association. In January, they held their annual conference in the Washington, D.C. area and named YRF as their charity of choice. Mark was invited to address their 3,000 attendees and 1970’s star Tony Orlando sang his #1 hit, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Ole Oak Tree,” in honor of their support for the Yellow Ribbon Fund. Mr. Orlando spoke eloquently about the need to support groups like YRF. At the end of the week, ABA presented us with a pledge of more than $45,000! As you will see throughout this Annual Report, the Yellow Ribbon Fund is a strong, thriving and financially secure organization. We are pleased to present this report to you and thank you for all that you have done to support and honor our injured service members. James S. Bugg, Sr. Chairman of the Board Mark E. Yellow Ribbon Fund 2010 Annual Report 1 Showing Appreciation to our Wounded Warriors During the past five years the Yellow Ribbon Fund has consistently lived up to our mission statement of “Welcoming Our Injured Service Members Home.” The wounded warriors at Walter Reed and the Bethesda Naval Hospital have a plethora of activities to choose from. We offer them everything that can fit their stage of recuperation: barbecues and bands, tickets to baseball, football and hockey games, holiday celebrations, and airline tickets on a limited basis for those who must be reunited with their injured loved ones – these are all ways we can show our deep appreciation for those who have done so much for us. Examples of Families We Help Family #1 A service member who lost a leg in an IED explosion in Afghanistan occupied a YRF two bedroom apartment for over a year with his wife and two sons. Family #2 The wife, brothers and sisters of a soldier who served in Iraq and was diagnosed with cancer stayed in a YRF apartment on a rotating basis for over one and a half years. Family #3 An injured service member who lost a leg in Iraq occupied one of YRF’s one bedroom apartments for four months until he retired from the Army. Yellow Ribbon Fund 2010 Annual Report 5 The Family Caregiver Program During the past fiscal year YRF’s Family Caregiver Program has expanded its existing services for our caregivers and offered new ones. Here is a snapshot of all we’ve been doing to try to make the lives of the caregivers, who give up so much for their loved ones, a little easier while they are staying at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital. Massage Therapy and Holistic Services Movie and Dinner Nights The therapeutic massage and holistic services program continues to be a great success in helping to give respite care to the caregivers of the injured service members. As of March 2010, YRF has provided 229 one-on-one closed door massages. We are currently providing these services two days a month in the Military Advanced Training Center (MATC), where the service members go for physical therapy. The first YRF dinner and movie night was held in October of 2009. This program was made possible by the generous donations from BB&T Bank, who donated $550 in the form of gift cards for Regal Cinemas and $600 worth of gift cards to local restaurants. In January 2010, Bill and Beatriz Aguirre-Kearney of WBKearney & Associates generously sponsored the dinner and movie night program for all of 2010. As of March of this year we have held 12 dinner and movie nights with a total of 84 caregivers attending. Pool Days at the Doubletree Hotel - Bethesda, MD Last summer the Doubletree Hotel in Bethesda, Md. offered their rooftop pool to the Caregiver Program free of charge during the months of July and August on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Doubletree also donated to the caregivers free valet parking and half priced lunches. Each week between eight and ten caregivers/children participated in the program, with a total of 102 participants. As of November 2009, Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) at Walter Reed offered at least once a month, and sometimes twice, free childcare for the participants. This added service has opened up the dinner and movie night program to more caregivers who were not initially able to participate due to the lack of childcare. Metro 101 In January 2010, the Family Caregiver Program officially kicked off the Metro 101 Program. This program represents a collaboration between YRF, Red Cross and Walter Reed’s Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS). It offers assistance to newcomers to the area with navigating the D.C. area’s Metro system as well locating the essential shops, services and stores they may need during their stay. Relocating to a new city can be overwhelming; introducing the families to the community and its easily accessible Metro system will allow them more freedom and increase their comfort level while staying in the Washington, D.C. area. Michelle Kacer, kneeling in the middle of the group, gathers with caregivers from Walter Reed after enjoying a dinner and movie night, thanks to the sponsorship of WBKearney and Associates. 6 Yellow Ribbon Fund 2010 Annual Report Michelle Kacer, Director of the YRF Family Caregiver Program, center, poses with two of the families she helps with her program: Spec. Brad Fasnacht, his wife Jessica, and their son Blake, (left), and Spec. Brandon Rethmel, his wife Sylvia, and their daughter Mariah, (right). YRF Mentor Program During 2009, the YRF Mentor Program continued to expand in numbers and scope. Over 300 injured service members have been interviewed at WRAMC and Bethesda Naval Hospital as we enter the fourth year of the program. The interviews help YRF identify soldiers and Marines who have expressed an interest in careers outside of the military. Mentors: Examples of mentors working with the YRF include attorneys, architects, accountants, construction company vice presidents, Federal IT sales personnel, college coaches, sports medicine professionals and others. These mentors have given the warriors exposure to civilian life and opportunities to hear first-hand what it takes to qualify for a particular job as well as a future contact in a particular field of interest. Education: Bob Talbot has arranged informational interviews for many wounded warriors with deans and faculty members at Catholic University. Programs of interest include social work, music, architecture, athletic administration and law. One soldier from Walter Reed is now a full-time student in the School of Architecture at CUA. Sporting Events: Thanks to the generosity of many in our community, injured soldiers and Marines have been provided with tickets to the Washington Redskins, Capitals, Wizards and the Nationals games. Golf: Local institutions such as Catholic University, St. John’s High School, D.C. Friends of Ireland (trade unions) and the Johnny Holliday Charity Tournament have donated foursomes to the injured service members for a day of golf and relaxation. Speaking engagements: On Veterans Day, Bob Talbot was asked to address three high school classes at St. John’s High School on the theme of community service, volunteerism and military service. He has also spoken to alumni clubs, church groups and civic organizations. injuries; eventually both his legs were amputated. He arrived at Walter Reed in May 2009. He has endured several surgeries and intensive rehab while adjusting to his prosthetics. The YRF helped Robert and his family with a rental car for most of 2009. Wife Jennifer called it a lifesaver as she and her husband looked for housing and schools for their eight-year old son Sebastian. This past winter YRF arranged for Sebastian to attend a youth baseball camp at Catholic University. The Canines will be moving into a new home in Columbia, Mo. when Robert medically retires this year. Robert plans to return to school and work in a nonprofit supporting other wounded service members. Lt. Joe Guyton was a 2007 ROTC graduate from the University of Virginia. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. As a member of the 5th Brigade, Joe was seriously injured by an I.E.D. blast outside Kandahar, Afghanistan. Joe has shown great determination adjusting to his injury and has become active in wheelchair basketball. Lt. Guyton and his wife, Kara Wagner Guyton, are both from the Washington, D.C. area. Joe attended Robinson High School in Fairfax, Va. and Kara went to Georgetown Visitation High School. The couple met at the University of Virginia. Joe has expressed an interest in law school. Bob arranged an interview for him at Catholic University Law School and then a visit to a class. Stories of Two YRF Service Members Sgt. Robert Canine is from Mexico, Mo.
