Graduation Decorum
Graduation ceremonies are, by their very nature, festive occasions.
The festivity celebrates the joy and satisfaction of accomplishment.
The ceremonies are also marked by seriousness, since the conferring of
degrees signifies long, hard work on the part of everyone involved: students,
faculty, administrators, parents, and spouses. In observance of the serious
nature of the ceremony, students and guests are expected to maintain a
measure of decorum appropriate for the occasion. Students are expected
to return to their seats after receiving their diploma and to remain seated
for the rest of the ceremony. Family and guests are asked to remain seated
for the entire ceremony, refraining from leaving their seats in order to take
pictures or to talk to graduates. Please be respectful.

Cathy Hill
Coastal Region Vice President, Georgia Power
Since joining Georgia Power in 1984, Cathy Hill has held
management positions in fleet operations, district engineering,
region power delivery, and region distribution operations. She
served as assistant to the president and CEO prior to her current
role as vice president of Georgia Power’s coastal region.
Today, Hill leads 300 employees serving 291,000 customers in Savannah, Statesboro,
Brunswick, and surrounding southeast Georgia communities. She provides leadership for
engineering, construction, sales, customer service, economic development, governmental
relations, and community development.
Hill also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Savannah Economic Development Authority and
is chairman of the board of directors for Armstrong State University Educational Properties
Foundation. In addition, she sits on the board of directors for the Savannah Area Chamber of
Commerce, Savannah Technical College, Georgia Tech - Savannah, Memorial Medical Health
Foundation, Ossabaw Island Foundation, Step Up Savannah, and SunTrust Bank-Savannah. She
is the past-chairman of the Creative Coast, United Way of the Coastal Empire, and Armstrong
State University Foundation.
With a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an M.B.A. from Georgia State
University, Hill also completed the executive management program at Harvard University. A
2010 fellow of the International Women’s Forum, Hill studied at the prestigious Judge School
of Business at Cambridge University and is a graduate of Leadership Georgia, the Regional
Leadership Institute, and Leadership Atlanta.
In 2015, Hill received the Reverend James M. Simms Public Service Award from the KingTisdell Cottage Foundation in Savannah, and, in 2014, she was honored as a “Community
Star” by Georgia Ports Authority, a “Woman of Distinction” by Girl Scouts of the Coastal
Empire, and a “Hero” by the American Red Cross for lifetime professional and community
achievements. The Georgia House and Senate also issued 2009 resolutions commending Hill
for her professional and civic work.
University Mace
Armstrong State University’s ceremonial mace traditionally leads the commencement
procession, serving as an important symbol of the institution’s history and legacy. One of the
oldest symbols of authority, the mace serves as a treasured “Symbol of Office” and is vested
with the power of the university.
Two leading Savannah artists, bronze sculptor Susie Chisholm and wood sculptor Dicky Stone,
created a mace that symbolizes the university’s longstanding ties to the city. Crafted from
bronze and wood, the design serves as an elegant tribute. A bronze magnolia flower cradles
a bronze medallion adorned with a stately architectural image of the Armstrong House, the
university’s original location at Bull and Gaston in downtown Savannah. The inscription reads
“Established 1935, Savannah, Georgia.” The mace’s staff has been handcrafted from the wood
of a cherry tree grown on the university’s current campus.
Academic Regalia
The academic regalia worn by faculty and administration at today’s commencement ceremony
traces its origin to that worn by faculty and students at medieval European universities. Modern
academic regalia consists of three parts: the gown or robe, a headpiece, and a hood.
The gown’s traditional color is black. For the bachelor’s degree, the gown has full, flowing
sleeves. The distinguishing feature of the master’s gown is the tippet sleeve. The doctoral gown
is the most elaborate, with a much fuller cut and velvet panels on the sleeves, around the neck,
and down the front. These panels may be black or the color that symbolizes the subject field in
which the degree was earned.
The familiar square mortarboard is the cap worn with a tassel, which may be any one of three
different colors—black, metallic gold, or the color representative of the major field of learning
in which the degree was earned.
While the gown and headpiece denote the wearer’s level of education, the hood shows the
greatest degree of symbolism. Those with advanced or professional degrees wear hoods
symbolic of the degree. The hood is edged in velvet, which denotes by its color the field or
discipline in which the wearer’s degree was earned. It is lined in two colors of silk representing
the college or university from which the degree was granted. It is worn falling from the
shoulders down the back of the gown in a display of vivid color.

Alma Mater
Alma Mater through the ages,
Singing thy undying fame,
Will thy sons and daughters cherish
And defend thy golden name?
To each heart thy noble story
And thy calm and stately grace
Herald thine immortal glory.
Armstrong, hail, all hail to thee!
Alma Mater, those before us
Left thine honor great and strong;
We who follow take their banner,
Raise it with a fighting song!
Consecrated is thy teaching,
Sacred is thy marble height,
Glorious thy spirit reaching
Ever upward to the light.
Words by Margaret Spencer Lubs and
Doris Falk, Class of 1939
