Corning Matrigel Matrix
Corning Matrigel® Matrix offers you a more complete basement
membrane preparation for better cell growth and differentiation.
C
orning Matrigel® Matrix is a solubilized basement
membrane preparation isolated from EngelbrethHolm-Swarm (EHS) mouse sarcoma, which is a tumor
rich in extracellular matrix proteins. Its major components
include laminin, collagen IV, enactin, and heparin sulphate
proteoglycan. It also contains growth factors, namely
TGF-β, epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor,
insulin growth factor, tissue plasminogen activator, and
other growth factors that
occur naturally in the EHS
tumor.
This model system closely
mimics the structure,
composition, physical
properties, and functional
characteristics of the
basement membrane in

Membrane Matrix
vivo, so that cells behave
as they do in vivo when
they are cultured on Corning Matrigel® Matrix. This system
provides a physiologically relevant environment for studies
of cell morphology, biochemical function, migration or
invasion, and gene expression.

Matrigel® Applications
Cell Growth and Differentiation
Corning Matrigel® Matrix is especially suited for the culture
of polarized cells, such as epithelial cells. It promotes the
differentiation of many cells types, including hepatocytes(1),
neurons(2), mammary epithelial(3), endothelial(4), and smooth
muscle cells(5) as well as various other glandular cells(6).
In Vivo Angiogenesis Studies
Corning Matrigel® Matrix HC can be used to assess in vivo
angiogenic activity of different compounds by subcutaneous
injection into mice (Corning Matrigel® Plug Assay). The plugs
are subsequently removed and analysed for the formation of
blood vessels. The use of Corning Matrigel® Matrix has been
demonstrated in several in vivo studies(7, 8, 9).
Augmentation of Tumor Growth in Nude Mice
Corning Matrigel® Matrix HC has been shown to promote
successful transplantation of many human tumor cells,
including prostatic, breast, small-cell lung, colon, adrenal
carcinomas, melanomas, and lymphoblastic leukemia cells.
Also, it has been found to increase tumor growth rates in vivo.
